  1. Yes, but that was before the whole John Williams thing passed into fan legend.
  2. Yes thats a good point actually. But am I wrong in thinking that Goldsmith would still have rather avoided the whole "homage to Williams" element of a possible film themes album, if it was ever to happen in his life time? This is all hearsay of course. On the contrary, I think the piece suits the slower pace wonderfully.
  3. This may be a well known subject, but I'm unsure on this. In the same way that Williams conducted Goldsmith on the much celebrated Boston Pops album (I still have the original cassette!), did Goldsmith ever conduct Williams on a similar project? The reason I ask is because of the petty remarks made by Goldsmith in the upcoming autobiography, as seen on these pages. John gave some truly outstanding performances of Jerry (I actually prefer the Williams rendition of the Star Trek theme) in the album I mentioned. The respect for Goldsmith's work was obvious. Did Jerry ever return the favour? Forgive me if this question is old, but I'd like to know
  4. Its funny how we all know what figure Tom Cruise gets for his latest film (often dross), yet we can't find out what a composer gets paid. Well, not that funny maybe, for obvious reasons, but you would still think there would be a source for all this shit. Like, how much does Michael Kahn get paid every time he cuts a movie. Thats not a question, just an example. **The GreatEye thinks "Hmm, a new (possibly profitable) website idea..."**
  5. I didn't happen to know that, thanks I'm a northerner you see. Buckinghamshire IS part of London to me Its the 'Greater London' thing. Obviously you know the area well.
  6. Angela's Ashes at a guess? Like your regular A-list movie star who wants to be in a Woody Allen film regardless of their usual pay check, has Williams ever gone on record as having received a cut-down fee for his musical talents? Say, a director he really wanted to work with, or a project he had a particular fondness for.
  7. Yes I quite agree, he has done some truly great scores and themes. I happen to love the main themes to Cocoon and The Land Before Time, though you hardly ever hear mention of these. But having said that, I would still be adamant in my request for fresh material. Wouldn't you? In fact the subject should not even have to arise with a composer of his talent, but the sad fact is - it would where James Horner is concerned. Incidentally, Mel Gibson surprisingly wasn't fussed about this issue when he heard Horners work on (the admittedly superb) Braveheart score. Either that or he hadn't seen Glory. For the main theme to the latter has a middle strings section which is near identical to the 'Freedom' theme of Braveheart.
  8. The only way I'd let him utilize his 4 note danger motif is if he promised to use an accordion instead of brass. And if he insisted on using a re-worked version of his Braveheart theme for the emotional moments, I'd politely ask him to change the first note and shorten the third by 1.5 seconds, so as to avoid similarities with the heroic story of William Wallace. And that robot film with Robin Williams.
  9. ... would you politely ask him to write brand NEW themes for your labour of love? Would you kindly tell him that although you love his work, you do not wish your precious film's music to sound like Braveheart, Titanic and Aliens? I would. I'd want the theme to be totally original and the action cues to have absolutely no sign of that damn 4 note motif he loves so much. I also wouldn't want the sound of clanging metal at any point Is that so much to bloody ask Mr Horner?! It makes me wonder why the likes of Ron Howard was never bothered by Horners musical regurgitation. Surely Howard is well aware of his past themes...
  10. There should've been a 'sometimes' option too. I can't vote yes or no. Recently, I've returned to the Superman theme in a big way, due to the upcoming sequel. Its mainly because I managed to get hold of the Prelude and main title march cue which I never had on my particular Superman album. The intro music as the boy narrates is sheer magic, possibly Williams' most on the money score opening ever. But yeah, I've done it to death and I need a break coz I am now SICK of it! My own fault.
  11. Yeah the coughing thing is a big no no, but you only normally get that during concert performances. In fact I don't ever recall hearing a musician or technician cough during a score recording.
  12. That's contradictory: how can you be fully immersed in the score if you hear incidental noises? I understood that when I typed it. I know it sounds odd, but it does indeed somehow immerse me even more. Weird I know, I can't explain it
  13. I'm talking recording quality. Personally, I quite like it when I pick up on the odd ambient or accidental noise here and there. Someone quietly turning a page, shifting in their seat or inhaling in readiness for the next big burst of brass. It somehow adds to the immersion imo. You could be listening to music from a galaxy far away, your mind completely in that world, but it only takes a violinists foot knocking against their chair to bring you back down to earth and remind you that this stuff was really being recorded in 1977 in a London studio.
  14. Well its a shame because they were indeed a talented group of musicians. Like Jediwashington mentioned, Lucas was probably being too greedy on the hire charges.
  15. I remember on the Williams conducts Williams album that much was made in the sleeve notes about this "new" orchestra specially being formed to offer a quality alternative to the usual studio orchestras when it comes to scoring the latest films. I haven't looked into it, but the last time I saw the SSO on movie credits was Predator 2. So what happened?
  16. Excellent! But I'd have prefered him in a black polar-neck
  17. Shit, really? I could've sworn the latest (and very good) encarnation was the work of Williams. So who did it then?
  18. Did Williams write the latest encarnation? It sure as hell sounds like him and his orchestrations. Only, the only info I can find on the matter suggests that Goldsmith wrote the last Universal Studios theme, but I'm pretty sure I know what theme they are referring to, its clearly a Goldsmith piece and well disposed of. The latest theme can be heard in pretty much any Universal DVD release. Is it Williams?
  19. I know, I know! But I didn't own a pc at the time. I didn't even know how simple it was to burn a copy off
  20. ...And still am. I purchased this about 10 years ago and it was my pride and joy amongst my slowly growing ost collection. But I had a bit of very bad luck. One day me and a friend had to endure a long car journey. I took disc 3 along for the ride. The Return of the Jedi disc to be exact (and obvious). After all, it features nearly all of the main themes and its superb in its own right. We enjoyed it immensely. I forgot to take it when we arrived home later. My friend left his car in the usual place outside his home. The car was burgled. They stole his CD player. My precious Williams disc was still in it. I felt sick when I found out. Damn. Even now, after about four years, I still get pissed off about this. So am I quite literally fu**ed? Do I have absolutely NO chance of ever acquiring disc 3 via other means? Probably not. I can't get this shit out of my head. Please help, my stunning (untouched by Lucas and his meddling) original trilogy ost collection is missing a masterpiece, a vital friend lost
  21. Apart from First Contact, the main theme from The Edge gets my vote. I really can't understand why this beautiful and underrated piece isn't talked about more, I love it. In fact I love it so much that I imported it into my Elder Scrolls: Oblivion music folder. It plays when I'm exploring the wilderness and it really compliments the game.
  22. That doesn't sound that obscure actually. I'd imagine the beautiful musical piece to compliment a catwalk show quite well. Your girlfriend clearly has a good ear. But I once heard the Arc theme from Raiders being used for a Domestos bleach commercial
  23. Far too heavy for my tastes, but very accomplished and good all the same. Their Williams renditions are very professional sounding, the band clearly know their instruments. Its a shame I couldn't understand a word that was being said though, but I got the jist! Its amazing how Williams has inspired so many people, even metal heads! Who'd have thought it. I'd love to hear what Williams himself thinks about this piece. The band should certainly send him a copy. I'm sure it was raise a smile on the old maestros tolerant face
