  1. so i was sitting at dinner in the WCU cafe, and we got to talking about John Williams. well, the one girl i was eating with happened to have met him at a concert. and i was commenting on how cool that must have been. i got a very unexpected response. she flat out started trashing williams because based on her 4 years of high school theory classes (in which she takes EXTREME pride), Williams "stole" the Duel of the Fates music from Carl Orff. and "it's not like the Duel of the Fates was inspired by Orff, or like Williams just inserted a portion of it, but that he copied the music exactly." !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :? i was dumbfounded. i didn't know what to say. and i was getting more and more angry as the conversation went on. she kept going back on how "great" she did in theory and how "great" her high school program was. i've never heard the music she's referring to. i told her i needed to hear the music. though jared showed me something by Orff, but i'm not sure if it was it. do any of you know what i'm talking about? i was pretty upset about it. but i didn't know what to say because i had absolutely NO clue what she was talking about. i intend to talk to her again, but i'd like to hear what some of you might have to say about this. oh, and she's a history major, NOT a music major because she "can't do aurals" (that's what she had told me when i first met her...i found that quite ironic when i remembered it later on). Cathy i was sure someone was going to tell me i spelled that wrong!
  2. I'm taking my parents! I wasn't expecting this to happen for a very long time! Thanks so much for the news!!!!! I've already bought tickets! I can't wait!
  3. i like Zimmer and Williams. i like music. i love film music. but John Williams will always be number one for me
  4. Then why don't you do it? Who says I won't?
  5. married twice as a matter of fact, first to Barbara who died at 18 years, and then 6 years later to Samantha Winslow...his sons are Joseph and Mark and his daughter is Jennifer...for more go to http://www.filmtracks.com/composers/williams.shtml
  6. Me again LOL (someday, i'll get used to this)
  7. Same here! Though, I was, of course, the main xylophone girl at LF. The mallets are the best! But I don't want to sound biased cause I loved playing everything else too.
  8. I was just kidding about the Philadelphia Orchestra (wishful thinking ); i do play in my school's orchestra if that's what you meant...but did everyone see the link? that's what inspired me to start this topic...i just thought it was neat to see how the composers/directors interact with the percussionists, what part they all play...of course i was especially interested because it focuses on the percussionists oh and yes, The Little Prince, how i love that book!
  9. I only use the term percussionist because I don't like to limit it to only "drummers" if you know what I mean And I'm sorry to disappoint you PetePan, but that is not tinkerbell...Ren might know who it is though :wink2:. Anyway, I'm really glad to see some responses...How did you guys like the article? Cathy, who finds hope in the fact that she now has 30 years to perfect her skill before she has to audition! But is 30 years enough??
  10. by the way, that was me again! i was so excited i forgot to sign in! "Orchestra" too
  11. I'm thinking we need more female composers!!!
  12. It just makes me appreciate music all the more! I mean, I am so much better at expressing myself through music. It somehow gives people a chance to see a side of me they wouldn't see otherwise.
  13. so sorry! that was me! I live in Philadelphia, and my brother is going to show me how to take the train there. Thanks
  14. I'm sure I can't remember the first time Williams' music took hold of me because it must have happened many times in my childhood. However, were it not for an extremely pushy friend, I may not have become as fascinated as I am now. Less than a year ago, I remember listening to this someone go on and on about some composer, who he had nicknamed "Johnny". Amazed and intrigued by his passion, I wanted to hear the music for myself. He, of course, was equally excited to let me sample his enormous collection of film music. Hence, began our Friday listening sessions at school, pretty much led by him . But since we were at school, sessions were limited, and he, being the extremely generous person that he is, began lending me a different soundtrack every week. I still remember the first time I really fell in love with Johnny. I was listening to my dear friend's Jurassic Park soundtrack on the train ride home from school, and I thought to myself, "So this is what he's been talking about all this time! No wonder!"
  15. Someway, somehow I will be there! Otherwise, I don't know what I'll do.

  17. your class makes me think of this game my little brother pete and i play whenever we get a few moments together. Pete's in the third grade too, and he's the only other one in my house actually appreciates the music I listen to. This kid's amazing! Anyway, my collection of film music isn't huge yet, but we have fun with what I have. I'll play something, and he'll tell me which movie it's from and sometimes even the part of the movie it is. u should see his face when he figures it out! anyway, just thought i'd share. Cathy
  18. I don't obsess over movies much, but Lord of the Rings is amazing! It's the type of movie that you can watch over and over again and never get tired of. The weekend after I got it, I watched it three times and if I had had time, I would have watched it again three more times! Unfortunately, other things required my attention, but you can call Lord of the Rings anything except boring! Of course, that's my opinion. Cathy
