The Complete Aladdin

Hey there. I've been toying on and off with an expanded Aladdin using the DVD. It's one of my favorite scores for sentimental reasons, even if it isn't the best score ever (or even the best score from Menken). There are parts of the DVD rip that are COMPLETELY SFX-free, and others that are crippled by some minor annoyances. For the really curious, I'll note that the DEHT on the DVD is useless, but the original 5.1 mix is pretty good. I've been favoring the Spanish track lately, if only because it doesn't contain any voice echoes in the palace scenes. Here's my cue list so far:

01. Arabian Nights - 1:19 (OST Track 01)

02. Legend of the Lamp* - 1:17

03. On A Dark Night - 2:48 (OST Track 14)

04. Less Than Worthy - 0:30

05. Aladdin on the Run** - 0:29

06. One Jump Ahead - 2:22 (OST Track 03)

07. Street Urchins - 1:51 (OST Track 04)

08. One Jump Ahead (Reprise) - 1:01 (OST Track 05)

09. Birds in a Cage - 1:23

10. The Mystic Blue Diamond - 2:21

11. Jasmine Runs Away - 0:46 (OST Track 15)

12. Marketplace - 2:34 (OST Track 16)

13. Jafar Discovers Aladdin - 0:50

14. Aladdin's Hideaway - 2:20

15. The Palace Guards - 0:39

16. The Boy's Sentence - 1:20

17. Jasmine Pouts / In The Dungeon - 2:20

18. The Cave of Wonders*** - 6:30 (OST Track 17)

19. Jasmine Taddles on Jafar - 0:25

20. The Genie Revealed - 0:10

21. Friend Like Me - 2:26 (OST Track 06)

22. Aladdin Cons The Genie - 0:20

23. Blasting Out of the Cave - 0:18

24. Jafar's New Scheme - 2:00

25. To Be Free**** - 1:39 (OST Track 07)

26. Making A Prince - 2:00

27. A Tower of Toys***** - 0:19

28. Brainwashing the Sultan - 0:43

29. Prince Ali - 2:51 (OST Track 08)

30. The Sultan Takes Flight - 0:53

31. Winning The Princess - 4:05

32. A Whole New World****** - 2:40 (OST Track 09)

33. The Kiss - 1:51 (OST Track 13)

34. Saying Goodbye to Prince Abooboo - 1:43

35. Thank You, Genie - 0:12

36. Jafar Exposed - 1:20

37. A Suitor is Finally Chosen - 0:37

38. Iago Panics - 0:08

39. Recognizing The Boy - 0:20

40. Aladdin's Word - 1:51 (OST Track 18)

41. Stealing The Lamp - 0:37

42. Jafar's Hour - 2:43 (OST Track 10)

43. Prince Ali (Reprise) - 1:07 (OST Track 11)

44. The Ends of the Earth - 1:35 (OST Track 12)

45. Desperately in Love - 2:10

46. The Battle - 3:38 (OST Track 19)

47. Happy End in Agrabah - 4:12 (OST Track 20)

48. End Titles - Friend Like Me (Instrumental) - 0:39

49. End Titles - A Whole New World (Pop Version) - 4:07 (OST Track 21)

* The first forty seconds can be found on the DVD's "Index" menu. Additionally, the final note on the OST is clean.

** A lousy sounding crossfade bridges this with "One Jump Ahead." The last nine seconds can be found on the DVD's "Backstage Disney" menu, complete with lousy crossfade.

*** About 1:30 is edited out of this track on the OST. It's mostly just comic incidently music underscoring Abu's discovery of the Magic Carpet.

**** The first twenty seconds of this track are unused in the final film.

***** This has a really harsh sounding fade at the end - I'm almost positive that it's part of the same cue as "Brainwashing The Sultan."

****** The album version substitutes twelve seconds of soaring orchestral music at the beginning with a soft piano melody.

Chronological Order For The OST: 01, 02, 14, 03, 04, 05, 15, 16, 17, 06, 07, 08, 09, 18, 10, 11, 12, 19, 20, 21.

While much of the unreleased music is shorter incidental cues, some really significant tracks are missing. My favorites have to be late in the film. As Iago steals the lamp, we hear "A Whole New World" in the background, only it never quite succeeds in taking off, limping to its final note as both the lamp and Aladdin's future with Jasmine are stolen. Equally awesome is "Desperately In Love," in which we hear disturbingly seductive variations on Jasmine's theme as she fakes her love for Jafar.

Anyway, I thought you guys might like this. I'm not actually making a complete edit right now - I just felt like throwing a cue list together. Enjoy!

If you ever do end up buying the CD, seek out the original 1992 release. I probably should've noted it on my cue list, but the '92 OST features the uncensored "Arabian Nights" (Where They'll Cut Off Your Ear If They Don't Like Your Face), whereas every version after that (even the Music Behind The Magic disc) features the PC version (Where It's Flat And Immense And The Heat Is Intense).

Anyway, this was one of my first soundtracks to fall in love with too. I've actually seen the movie so many times that I find the absence of some cues on the OST to be kind of jarring.

Nice work...I love most of those classic Disney scores, and I vividly remember playing the soundtrack cassettes over and over when I was young, Aladdin included. ;)
