I believe I just discovered a new motif in The Empire Strikes Back.

I think it may have to do with Darth Vader finding Luke Skywalker.

It occurs:

Disc 1- track 9- 3:06-3:24

track 11-3:56-4:01

Disc 2- track 10-0:07-0:40

It may occur more times, I just have not taken the time to find out.

Is this truly a new discovery or merely old data?

May the Force be with you!

Interesting. No so sure about track 11, but you may be on to something on the other 2 tracks.

It's definitely there in track 11...

But it's just a short full step interval for the most part, there isn't much to the theme, but it is definitely rhythmically unique and repeated in these three tracks.

It's the "Call of the Dark Side" motif. It is indeed connected with the relationship between Luke and Vader. Most notable appearance is the one in The Magic Tree you listed.

WHAT!!?? When did this motif come up? Why wasn't I told about it? A have go and listen to those segments you mentioned.

Mr. Breathmask have you been holding out this Call of the Dark Side motif and not telling the rest of us? Or is this common knowledge and I should feel ashamed not to have noticed it before :? . Does Matessinomention it and is it in ROTJ or the rest of the SW scores?

I think I may have mentioned it. Once. Two years ago. In passing.

I've dubbed it the Call of the Dark Side motif for lack of a better name.

I am not sure about the last time (the Boba Fett basoon), but the other two are definitely the same motif. Dunno if it was accidental or deliberate, though.

To answer one of your questions Incanus, Michael Matessino does not

mention the motif in the liner notes. I hope I'll have time to listen to

all of the music of Episodes V & VI this weekend to see(hear :) ) if it

occurs anywhere else.

Also, Yoda's theme occurs very subtly on track 4 of Disc 2 (I think that

is the right track...?) and it is not mentioned in the liner notes either. I

think the piccolo has the melody. This weekend I'll listen for that again.

Enjoy your day!

Thanks Ontyrian! I was quite sure Matessino does say nought about it in his liners (though they are excellent). Interesting new find. Mayhaps I should give Old trilogy a spin for a change. Prequels have been in more frequent listening. Have a nice day ye all!

I listened this morning. Very interesting. I didn't go through the whole score to find other appearances, but I think you found a hidden gem!

I always liked that little connection. Also liked how the music played just before it on "Han Solo &..." when Vader is talking with the Emperor mimics the music that's played in "The Last Battle" in Star Wars (about 2 minutes into that track). Nice, creepy stuff with the strings sliding around the corners.
