The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has just announced its 2013/14 season. It will be two of John Williams' most acclaimed concerti, tuba and flute, the new additions to the on-going JW concert works cycle by the DSO and maestro Leonard Slatkin, to be recorded and later released on Naxos.

An on-going endeavor to record a complete set of John Williams’ concerti featuring DSO Principal musicians will also continue in 2013-14 with performances of the Williams Flute Concerto and Tuba Concerto. Past releases have included John Williams Horn Concerto (2010) featuring DSO Principal Horn Karl Pituch, John Williams’ Violin Concerto featuring former DSO Concertmaster Emmanuelle Boisvert (2011), Williams’ Five Sacred Trees featuring DSO Principal Bassoon Robert Williams (2013), and the Williams Cello Concerto featuring DSO Principal Cellist Robert deMaine (2013). The concerti are direct-to-digital recordings on the Naxos label available to download via the DSO to Go mobile app, iTunes and Instant Encore.

Additionally, the Pops season opening concert will also feature an all-Williams film music program on October 18-20.

The flute concerto belongs in the small company of JW works that are the most challenging and "avantgarde" (also includes IMAGES, the Irwin Allen TV shows and "The Abduction of Barry" from CE3K). It will be great to have another recording of the piece so many years after the Peter Lloyd recording.

Great news! I hope the Clarinet Concerto will follow soon, as it's the last one we still need a proper recording.

Indeed. The mp3.com release (or whatever it was) sounds godawful.

There are still quite a few commercially unreleased JW concert works beyond that, though -- the piano sonata, the wind quintet, symphony no. 1, maybe a new recording of the sinfonietta for wind ensemble and the nostalgic jazz oddyssey, Seven for Luck, Soundings, A Young Person's Guide to the Cello, Quartet La Jolla, Rounds. And then some fanfares.

There's also the viola concerto, which doesn't yet have a commercial recording.

Oh yes there is no shortage of Williams' concert and celebratory pieces DSO could (and should) record. :)

The world premiere of the La Jolla Quartet is available on-line for free. Agreed, it's the video of the full concert, but one can easily get the audio just for listening pleasure ;)

True, and I think most of us have done that (most of us have also ripped audio from the video of "Rounds" and "Young Person's Guide to the Cello", for example), but I still wish it got a proper audio recording. Maybe couple it with another piece, release it on CD with liner notes! That would have been something. :)

The post on the JWfan homepage is somewhat misleading. The absence of "2014" makes it look like March 27-29 of this year. Also the following sentence:

An on-going endeavor to record a complete set of John Williams’ concerti featuring DSO Principal musicians will continue in 2013-14 with performances of The Five Sacred Trees and the Cello Concerto.

Surely "performances" should read "releases", as these have already been performed and are awaiting release?
