  1. Indeed. I find that reading a number of comments on a score does affect the way I listen to it. A rare listen that was totally objective (As in I had no idea what anyone anywhere thought of it.) was GoF, and I think it's a very good score. Justin
  2. "As the humans say, up yours!" - Citizen G'Kar Justin
  3. The scores to Dances With Wolves, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and The Red Violin are all fantastic. This was definatly the most diffucult vote but in the end I had to go for Barry's Dances With Wolves. Glorious themes from wall to wall this one! Justin - Who would put The Lion King in the runner-up spot. (Although note that I'm not as familier with The Red Violin as the other entries.)
  4. Catch up time! The Aviator. A massive production which chronicles the life and fall of Howard Hughes into madness. Scorsese does a good job overall on the film. Generally keeping the direction static in nature except for some of the FX heavy plane sequences. The madness sequences are really well done. Shore's score is acceptable but nothing spectacular (An exception might be taken with the final Hercules cue). IMO, the greatest thing about The Aviator are the performances. The film is chalk full of them. From Kate Beckinsale's solid performance as Ava Gardner to Alan Alda's strong work as Senator Brewster. The two stand out performance are of course Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes and Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn. IMO, both Oscar worthy performances. Also a nod to John Logan and his script is in order. Overall, a solid historical work with some interesting psychological elements throughout. Snake Eyes. Not the greatest film but I could definitely see De Palma just having fun with the direction. Which is always a good thing. Visually the film is simply stunning. I love every minute of it. From the opening 15 minute monster shot to the final shot which actually finishes after the end credits have rolled the film is visual perfection. The story is also very engaging although somewhat predictable, particularly in regard with Gary Sinise's character. Nicolas Cage is just fun to watch in this movie. His character is well portrayed and the interaction between Cage and Sinise is powerful. David Koepp does a good job of weaving the films interacting story lines together. Ryuichi Sakamoto's score is full and orchestral with all the usual bells and whistles. Nothing that particular sticks in my mind but a solid effort. Overall, a really good film that is just a fun ride for those looking for a more shallow De Palma entry. Blow Out. The film is definitely a solid entry for De Palma. Presenting some predictable to wild twists throughout the film. Much of the film runs as a fairly standard conspiracy picture. However, once John Lithgow steps on screen, all bets are off. This a fantastic character for Lithgow who is just great at it. Travolta is acceptable, however, I found Nancy Allen to be extremely annoying throughout the film. Even if the film as a whole is not spectacular you can be assured of at least one jaw dropping sequence simply because it has the words "Directed by Brian De Palma" in it. And to be sure there is indeed one. The last 10-15 minutes of the film is spectacular and really is what makes the film unique. A wonderful ending which I'd be willing to watch again and again. Check it out De Palma fans! Justin - Who can type no more.
  5. Madagascar. Overall a waste of space. Zimmer's original score is under a dozen minutes and only 2 cues are Zimmer on solo. "Zooster's Breakout" is a surprisingly fun cue other than that there are a few fun inclusions (Chariots of Fire, Born Free, Staying Alive). As Good As It Gets. This is just a nice relaxing score where Zimmer shows his talent as a composer. I also dare anyone here to listen to the first track on the album and say it doesn't sound like "Dinner With Amelia". Justin
  6. A hole in the impenetrable wall of KM's JW collection? Ultimate fanboy, indeed. Justin - Who thinks KM should be impeached and Roald sworn in.
  7. Since when has "Officially Released" been a barrier to fandom? Justin - Off to listen to his DELETED BY MODERATOR of Family Plot. You're one of THEM aren't you?
  8. Nope. It's nothing that has been mentioned. Justin - Who finally found a good one.
  9. its a terrible score, one of the worst JW Oscar nominated scores ever, so undeserving. The entire film was constructed for realism. I personally don't find any fault with Williams choice for the music taking a back seat. After all he still wrote one of his best concert pieces for the film. Honestly, not every score can be marches wall-to-wall. Justin
  10. A great actor who played the infamous one-armed man in The Fugitive to the world of Star Trek as Commander Tomalak in The Next Generation. Easily his most famous role was for probably the most interesting character in the show Babylon 5, Ambassador G'Kar. Rest in peace Andreas Katsulas, you will be missed. Justin
  11. Am I going to be the only one posting screenshots? That being said, here's another! Justin
  12. I think the poster is flawed but unique enough to catch the eye. Justin - Who prefers it over many posters he's seen lately.
  13. I don't own any of the scores. However, I enjoy tracks from Chariots of Fire, The Right Stuff, Out of Africa, The Last Emperor, and The Milagro Beanfield War. *cough* and occasionally, The Little Mermaid. Justin
  14. Any theme,no matter how inspired, sucks when it is played by synths. The theme is played on piano. Justin
  15. My vote is biased as I've not heard all the scores on the list but Chariots of Fire has one of the best themes ever written so that's my vote. Justin
  16. I voted for Hook. But now that I think about JFK...... :? Justin
  17. Comming from you that's really funny. Justin
  18. Well maybe this poll shouldn't have E.T. on it. At least then it would be interesting. Justin - Who would have voted for The Omen in the 70's poll if Star Wars hadn't been on there.
  19. Indeed. My vote went to Home Alone 2. Not because the score is unenjoyable, I just couldn't bring myself to vote for Rosewood which is far more unique. Justin
  20. I agree. Why not just have a single poll of the JW oscar winners? Justin
  21. Before this thread is locked and all memory of these posts erased I'd just like to say that Mr. Steef is a complete and total smeg head. Justin
