metaphor123 0
I hear a lot of talk about what Superman II 'could have been'. I think it is excellent as it is, and there are very few things that would have made it better. The only sequence that springs to mind is the lame-o reveal of Clark Kent-is-Superman to Lois Lane via a hand in the fire. The original scripted sequence (which sounds like a showstopper) had Lois Lane telling Clark that before, she was willing to bet her life that Clark was Superman. Now, she says, I am willing to bet your life. She then draws out a pistol and shoots him. Clark Kent says to her 'if you had been wrong, you would have shot Clark Kent dead' and Lois Lane smiles and says 'with blanks?'Also, the whole Supeman is evil thing in Superman III was a *bad* idea rather than a promising one. Superman is a hero, he is incorruptible and should stay that way. He isn't angsty and borderline like Batman for God's sake.
UCFKevin 0
Well, he is when screwed up kryptonite gets to his system. If you don't have the Superman DVD, get it, as the screen tests actually include that blank bullets scene that COULD'VE been in SII. I think it's a great movie, too, but there's just too much stupid camp in it, and some very bad effects that wouldn't have happened if Donner was still in control (namely the Houston scenes). It just lacked verisimilitude.

Figo 2
I agree, too much "camp" in Superman II. Also, too many of the sets (and set-pieces) looked studio-ish. Who came up with that lunar module? You wouldn't have seen anything like that in the original. Well, except at the North Pole (complete with polar bear), but that stuff at least looked cool.Figo, who in '78 believed a man could fly. JoeinAR 1,949
the worst effect in Superman 2 was the wig worn by the president.Talk about awful. LOL LOL Under Donners hands Superman 2 would have rivaled Superman for sincerity, reverance, and quality. The Salkinds are just about the worst sort of producers out there. They want to make a buck, and could careless about quality. Actually they sound like alot of todays producers.
Figo 2
I only just noticed Ratzenberger in the original when I saw it this past time! No matter who shot it, the moon stuff was pretty lame. The prison scenes also seemed more cartoonish the second time around. And the balloon. Aiee. The film just looks and feels different.

Ollie 1,059
What happens with hair on men is that it starts to leave your head and travels to other parts of your body where you really don't need it.Back to Superman II, it was my understanding that all of the Luthor scenes were filmed by Donner and that Hackman refused to come back for re-shoots under Lester. JoeinAR 1,949
Donner is one of my favorite directors.I love Superman, Goonies, Conspiracy Theory, Lethal Weapon, and Lethal Weapon 2, Scrooged, the Omen, and the original Twilight Zone episode in glorious b&w, Nightmare at 20000 Feet, with William Shatner.some of his movies are not special, but he always adds flair.I anxiously anticipate Timeline for next year and hope he will get Mr. Williams to score that film. Figo 2
I can't watch Goonies without a touch of embarrassment. Lethal Weapon III is one of the worst big budget movies I have ever seen. I couldn't bring myself to see IV. Every time he comes out with another Lethal Weapon I have to ask myself, why isn't Donner doing another Superman and why isn't Mel doing another Mad Max?Figo, who imagines Joe looks a lot like Max's boss in the original. UCFKevin 0
I don't think Donner and WB have that great of a relationship, especially in regards to Superman. I'm pretty sure he's said that he would LOVE to do it, but no one has asked him to. Bummer. But honestly, I think it's for the best. He gave us the best, let someone else try now. I think Donner is an excellent director. I honestly love ALL of his films, that I've seen anyhow. Well, Assassins I liked, ditto for Conspiracy Theory, but Goonies, ALL the LW films, Supes, Maverick, they're all excellent for entertainment. Very fun movies all around. He's a very...I dunno. Typical director. He doesn't have a specific style or flair for anything special, but dammit, he gets the job done, and how!
Figo 2
On the basis of Scrooged and the Lethal Weapon films, I would guess he is a director who permits a great deal of improv, to the point sometimes where it throws an entire movie off-course. Unless Bill Murray and Mad Mel simply have too much star power for him to veto.
UCFKevin 0
OH yeah, I forgot Scrooged.I'm pretty sure LW4 was basically entirely improvised. Gibson basically said so when he was on Fatty O'Donnell.

Figo 2
Sorry, Joe. No disrespect to you. The photo is completely inappropriate. That's what makes it so damn funny. I've been laughing about it, on and off, all afternoon. People on the street must think I'm crazy. But I can understand how awkward it would be for you if someone caught you looking at it at work. An argument could be made that it skirts pornography without actually going over the edge, but I doubt your boss would be up for discussing the finer points.
