Ideas for Somewhere in My Mem'ry

OK all you budding songwriters!!!!

Some of you may remember my second graders are performing Somewhere in My Mem'ry for their Christmas concert. I am planning on having a slide show to go along with the song. Slides will be Christmas baby pictures of the kids in the concert. Or holiday pics or whatever.

K - here's what I need help on. I need to extend the song. I need more verses. I don't know which verses to extend. I personally feel like I don't want to sing the precious moments (into the last section) more than once but I don't want the song to be boring. I basically need to double the time of the song.

I want to keep the same feeling going with the song. I don't want to put TOO much stuff about Christmas but what ever's good.

Candles in the window,

Shadows painting the ceiling.

Gazing at the fire glow,

Feeling that gingerbread feeling.

Stockings o?er the fireplace.

Presents under the tree.

?????

?????

Precious moments,

Special people,

Happy faces

I can see.

Somewhere in my mem?ry.

Christmas joys all around me.

Living in my mem?ry,

All of the music,

All of the magic,

All of the family home here with me.

So what I'm looking for from you is, help with extending the song with nice lyrics that are kid friendly. No big words. Can anyone help? If I like your stuff I'll put your name in the program! (if you want) LOL

K, I think if we can change the words of the last part I can be OK with singing it two times. It's the last words that I only want to sing once.

Any luck?

P. S. you don't have to come up with a whole verse. A line or even rhyming words will do!!!!!

Let those creative juices flow!

?????

Paper, ribbon, and lace

Shimmering, glittering, sparkling

I know it doesn't exactly rhyme, but it could be good enough.

Good luck!

um, i don't think I'm the first one to do that. P.S. they aren't in all caps AND my whole message wasn't like it. So let's stick to the topic here.

Ray I LIKE IT! I'll see if I can come up with some more. Anyone else?

Ren,

I find it rather difficult to think about Christmas rhymes, when I'm sitting in my shorts, drinking a beer and it's 25 degrees outside.

I will think about it.

Ren,

after much listening to the Home Alone soundtrack over and over and over ... :( LOL ... here's what I came up with:

(I)

Candles in the window,

Shadows painting the ceiling.

Gazing at the fire glow,

Feeling that gingerbread feeling.

Stockings o'er the fireplace,

Orn'ments lining the tree.

Soft snow tickling my face,

Moments preserved in my mem'ry.

Tender gazes.

Warmth and comfort.

Loved ones smiling

back at me.

Somewhere in my mem'ry,

Lies the joy of Christmas.

Living in my mem'ry,

All of the music

All of the magic

All of the fam'ly,

home, here with me.

(II)

Sleigh bells jingle laz'ly,

Friends and fam'ly together.

Windows frosted haz'ly,

Magical, crisp winter weather.

Wreaths hung on the front door,

Sitting on grandpa's knee.

Stories, legends, and lore.

Told to me, now in my mem'ry.

Precious moments.

Special people.

Happy faces,

I can see.

Somewhere in my mem'ry,

Christmas joys all around me.

Living in my mem'ry,

All of the music

All of the magic

All of the fam'ly,

home, here with me.

A few notes:

- Since it's the main point of the song, I felt it important to use mem'ry at the end of each second stanza. Also, it's a convienient, useful rhyme. :P

- And also I felt it important, even though you said not to, to use the "Somewhere in . . . all of the family" stanza twice. Since it's the main emotional grabber, I thought that by using it twice, the "audience" would be like "oh, we remember this" . . . but I still changed it slightly to match the words used in track 15 of the HA score. I figured it could be slowed down the second time and the last note held longer for greater emotional tug. Or something like that. IDK, upon listening to this whole thing, it made sense to me to have it in there twice. :(

These were just my thoughts while writing this silly thing. I blame the fact that's it's after 3 am and that I've had lots of coffee. Christmas lyrics in August CAN be done, but it IS tough.

Hope these can be used / inspire you to write something better!

Matt, let me tell you that I really enjoyed reading your lyrics. It flowed nicely...after I stopped tumbling over the melody.

I think Ren will like it too.

Oh Ren, where are youuuuuuuuuu??

:wink2: Thanks for the compliments guys. Glad to see others liked what I scribbed out.

Ren, I wrote it off and on over the course of around 3 hours. Surfing the net, listening to both HA scores, and scribbling notes, themes, and rhymes. It all just kinda came together. I want it to be Chrismas now, too. 8O

-- Matt, thinking that he now has HA score permanently stuck in his head for all eternity

I can't thank you enough. Do you want me to put your name in the program since you wrote so much? When my concert is over I'll be sure to get the sound up here for all to listen to.

Ren,

you don't have to put my name in the program if you're low on space. It's not like anyone who reads it will know who I am anyways. :(

Trumpeteer,

I didn't mean it as a bad thing, necessarily, just that it was stuck in my head ALL the next day . . . and as much as I like it, it IS very Christmas-y . . . not exactly what I was looking for in August. :)

I'll have you all know that my second graders can now sing ALL of the lyrics for Somewhere in My Mem'ry.

Thank you to Leslie ( ;) ) and Matthew DeTurck (I think that's how you spell it) AKA Dalboz

When I get a sound file of them I'll put it online if that's legal.

Here's another Leslie Bricusse verse (you hear this on the Bette Midler version) :

Memories of my childhood,

When I was five, six or seven

I would wake when dawn would

Living in Christmas day heaven

Precious moments...
