A24 4,333
You get a little bit of history too and the cinematographers that defined it. The number one spot was a nice surprise ... Alex Ricard
Naïve Old Fart 9,528
Agreed about #1...but, somehow, I'm not surprised. 1984 is fantastic, and it's all ENR. I love it.
TheUlyssesian 2,478
Even before I opened the video I know the no. 1. An overly obvious pick and I am not sure the right one. No. 1 according to me should be Toland. Citizen Kane is a skull crushing work of cinematography, a monument to what lighting and images can achieve. He also had Best Years Of Our Lives to add to that. Perhaps the single most influential cinematographer of all time.
Thor 7,504
Interesting list, but some glaring omissions. Where's Vilmos Zsigmond, for example?
A24 4,333
People say the number 1 spot is predictable and obvious but Roger Deakins never got an Oscar so I dunno ...

Literally the only single point in the underrated column is lack of an Oscar. All other points might go in the fairly rated or over-rated column. That's not to say he isn't great. He's of course outstanding and deserves to be in the top 10, just not at no. 1. Almost seems like a default pick in a way.

It's not the conventional Top 10 where #1 is the best of all, but each pick is considered the best within a given era or topic. 10 - The beginnings, Billy Bitzer 9 - The Golden Age, Gregg Toland 8 - Transition to color, Robert Burks 7 - Technicolor and Cinemascope, Freddie Young 6 - New Hollywood, Vittorio Storaro 5 - Europe, Sven Nykvist 4 - Around the world, Kazuo Miyagawa 3 - 80's and 90's, Janusz Kaminski 2 - Women, Maryse Alberti 1 - Today, Roger Deakins
Naïve Old Fart 9,528
No Geoffrey Unsworth? No John Toll? No Jack Cardiff? No Dean Semler? No Gordon Willis? No Leon Shamroy? Wha'?! 4 minutes ago, Ricard said: It's not the conventional Top 10 where #1 is the best of all, but each pick is considered the best within a given era or topic. 10 - The beginnings, Billy Bitzer 9 - The Golden Age, Gregg Toland 8 - Transition to color, Robert Burks 7 - Technicolor and Cinemascope, Freddie Young 6 - New Hollywood, Vittorio Storaro 5 - Europe, Sven Nykvist 4 - Around the world, Kazuo Miyagawa 3 - 80's and 90's, Janusz Kaminski 2 - Women, Maryse Alberti 1 - Today, Roger Deakins Put that way, the list makes sense, but I still don't agree with it. But then the numbering is weird, why number it in the first place and do a countdown. Also Cardiff is a huge miss I agree.
