  1. I enjoyed it. I get the criticism about the villain, but (spoiler):

    Spoiler

I'm not sure it was supposed to be a secret - more her motivations maybe. I mean, she and her brother immediately argued - her saying that their father never should have called the Supers but gone to the safe room. PLUS, her name is literally Evelyn Deavors - as in "Evil Endeavors" so her own name is a pretty big hint.

Overall, I thought it was a worthy sequel.

  2. This is at the very top of my holy grails list. Holy crap. Finally. I've loved movie scores since I was very young and first heard Williams' Superman in the movie on a TV airing. Over the years, as interest has peaked and waned, there are a handful of scores that have reinvigorated my passion for film music. Seeing this film and hearing Kamen's score so prominently was one such moment. I immediately begged my parents to take me to the nearest Musicland (remember those?) and purchased the OST with my hard-earned lawn mowing money.

    I still have that CD.

I can't wait to get this new version in my hands. Of all the unbelievable releases we've gotten lately, the Superman films (The Blue Box), CE3K (LLL), The Goonies (VSD), and now Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves from Intrada. These were the scores that just did it for me at various times in my life.

    This is terrific!

Having Rey's parents be some characters we already know (or relatives of them) would have just been more "small universe' syndrome, like the prequels were full of.  This is better.  The kid with the broom could be the main character in Rian's new trilogy!

That’s a good point. I can agree with that.

I do hope IX takes place some years in the future. Given the state of everything, it almost seems like it would have to.

I agree with Stefan.  I thought it was great that Rey's parents were nobodies and new Force users can come from anywhere.  It's like muggle-born wizards in Harry Potter

Yeah, I can see that point for sure. In this world so far, lineage has played a huge role. I am not opposed to the whole "muggle morn" idea being carried over. I just like the lineage aspect of Star Wars.

I also do like Kylo being the main villain - I just feel Snoke was wasted and never really given any weight. I never felt like, "Oh, Kylo has stepped up and either taken or inherited the role from this great evil power. It just seems like he took over for the guy who was main villain because the movie told us he was. He never had any weight to me. Definitely glad he's gone - just don't think he ever seemed to matter.

  5. Snoke was a useless placeholder. We never cared about him at all. By Jedi, the Emperor dying mattered. Snoke was as useless here as Steppenwolf in Justice League. No backstory. No reason to care, fear him, or take him seriously.

The Leia death fake-out was awful. I truly wish her character had received a graceful exit in this film.

I loved pretty much everything on the island with Luke and Rey. The explanation of the force was terrific.

I didn't like Rey's parents being nobodies. We get it. Greatness can come from anywhere. Don't care one bit. Wanted her lineage to matter.

The music fit the film perfectly and I thought was mixed very well and very appropriately.

Rose seemed very forced. She never earned me caring about her as much as they tried to make it happen.

Laura Dern's character was also pointless and seemed only there to have some "hero" die by sacrificing herself.

Overall, I enjoyed it and will go see it again to better form my opinion. On first viewing though, The Force Awakens is undoubtedly a better film in my opinion.

  6. He reshot just a single intro to a clip because he said the date wrong. I hate that he is gone.

Now the moment in the finale makes more sense, when he was introducing the Taco Bell clip and he said the date and some of the audience laughed and clapped.

Exactly. And that's another thing I loved about him. He treated it as if he was doing a show for the studio audience that happened to be broadcast on TV as well. I saw a Thursday taping once. On Thursday, he did two shows and he didnt tape on Friday. That's why on Friday broadcasts he would often make jokes about Thursday's audience being bad or whatever...it was the same audience. He also came out before almost every show and joked and took questions from the audience. The last taping I saw several years ago, he kept on talking and laughing with the audience and didn't leave until the band started playing the opening theme. He was a classic performer for sure!

And I agree that Fallon is aiming for a different generation and that's fine. It's just almost not late night tv in the way I think of it. It's a daytime variety show at night. He's obviously doing great in the ratings so people like what he does. I just hope that the actual art of late night television as a live event versus all pre-recorded, scripted clips isn't dead.

  7. I know it has gotten mixed reviews but I loved it the film. It is overtly optimistic and I think that's why people don't like it...not "real" or gritty. I loved it. It was long in spots but more than anything, the tone of optimism and hope was a refreshing change. I've always wondered what it would be like to be a child at a time when the future was exciting, jet packs and just anticipation. Loved the movie. I enjoyed the score in the film but need to listen more to really know how I would rate it.

  8. Lifelong Letterman fan. I was optimistic for Colbert because I've liked what I've seen of him out of character in the past. It now seems he's doing the show in basically his Colbert Report character. Everything about this show looks embarrassingly bad. I hope I am wrong but it just looks atrocious. There is nobody left who is just a good broadcaster , interviewer and genuinely funny on network late night. As a child of the nineties, I occasionslly enjoy Fallon's nostalgia-drenched bits but his interviews are not good and he's just not that funny. His skits can be good in an SNL type way but he does daytime TV at night...clipped and pre packaged for Facebook videos. I hope someone comes along to pick up the torch. Conan is the closest but nobody touches the Carson/Letterman type show. I've seen both Fallon and Letterman live more than once. Fallon is like you're in the studio audience for a scripted sitcom. Stuff filmed out of order, bits filmed for future shows, reshoots, multiple takes, etc. Being at a Letterman taping was a live event. It happened in real time almost exactly as it would happen. I saw Letterman four times and never once was anything reshot. My brother was at the final show. He reshot just a single intro to a clip because he said the date wrong. I hate that he is gone.

  9. Hopefully the more recent scores continue to be well done.

I've given up thinking the classic/Golden Age scores will have any new material. Still, I'm a completist and want to support the line so I've bought them all so far. I'm afraid that a lack of sales for the Golden Age scores would signify a lack of interest by Disney versus a dissatisfaction with the lack of new music.

  10. This score has groen on me and I love the use of the organ.

Also, in the above "Cosmic Sounds," video, I was surprised at hearing Zimmer make the comparison between his using a real orchestra and Nolan using real film.

The thing with Zimmer is, when he strays away from his now signature sound, I really like some of what he puts out.

  11. Thoroughly enjoyed the film and the score. Delightful is a wonderful word to describe it. I just returned from seeing it with my daughter . I'm very thankful it didn't fall prey to the popular choice to "ground" or "darken" material. It was a wonderful afternoon at the thearer enjoying a fairytale with my daughter. I left smiling.

    Highly recommended!

  12. I'm with Jason. I've always been in the DC camp. Growing up, Marvel didn't interest me much at all. It's disappointing how DC's cinematic attempts lately have turned out. I genuinely enjoy most of the Marvel films but nothing excites me about the upcoming DC slate of films. Even their best films (the Nolan Batman series), I think are overrated.

  13. I've preordered al six so far and was concerned when Toy Story never showed up for preorder. Even though the older classics have been relative disappointments (Mary Poppins, Fantasia, Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio), the more recent ones have been great releases (The Little Mermaid and The Lion King) have been almost purpose.

The collector-focused lines have to do things right to get the hardcore fans to purchase and really need a strong advocate for them.

Like with the Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets. Each year I waited in nervous anticipation to see if the line would continue. I think Leonard Maltin was instrumental in willing the series to continue as long as it did. THAT series was perfect. It was also the ideal place to release Song of the South with a nice "Sorry if this 65 year old film hurts your feelings" obligatory intro. Regardless, that series was a dream come true.

The Legacy Collection hasn't lived up to that level on the music front yet, but I hope the EPCOT set and others will push it more in that direction. Straight re-releases are of little interest...even though I bought them all to do my small part to support the line.

  14. I want it unaltered as well. It's also a matter of principle for me. Should we " fix" the effects on the original King Kong? I'm not opposed to filmmakers constantly tweaking their films but the original theatrical cuts should be available as well. The Close Encounters of the Third Kind set is the absolutely perfect way to do it. It had excellent presentations of the theatrical, special edition and director's cut. It's wonderful and should be the standard that releases from "tinkering" directors judge against.

  15. How to Train Your Dragon 2

I took the kids to see the movie last night. I want to see it again but this is a terrific sequel. Just had a blast.

The score is beautiful. It's even better in the film. It's the score of the year so far for me. So much energy and joy that just explodes from the speakers and then quiet, tender moments.

This one will get a lot of repeat listens. It does work better in chronological order though.
