  5. Right, because he is better. I don't think more hummable = better. After all, Brokeback Mountain is very hummable. As are the Braveheart and Bicentennial Man themes
  6. We're talking about game music performed by an actual orchestra, sometimes with a significant choir presence too. On the subject of symphonic style music which is ultimately synthesised, yes there has been some superb work done over the years. Zelda being the obvious mention. But does anyone remember the thoroughly 'orchestral' music of a fairly old SNES game called Actraiser? The composer of the score to that game was clearly shouting out for his compositions to be performed by the LSO! It really was an epic score which had to make do with the admittedly decent synth sounds of the SNES sound chip. Going back further, The Last Ninja 2 on the trusty antique that was the C64 featured a tremendous amount of worthy orchestral style music. Its amazing that the simple blip-blops of that game could convey such a feeling of something yearning to be performed in a orchestra hall. Also, does anyone remember the outstanding SNES renditions of the Star Wars trilogy music?

  9. Gone are the days when a simple blip-blop audio track played alongside your gaming pleasure. Nowadays big budget games are utilizing significant sized traditional orchestras to achieve the feeling of total gaming immersion. Some game 'scores' even have the likes of Danny Elfman composing the main themes - Fable for instance. And a great theme that was too, typical of Elfman. Games like The Elder scrolls: Morrowind have pretty sumptous scores written for them, the main theme to this game alone is worthy of any major Hollywood adventure movie. Not heard it? Check it out via my link below. Another great piece is the main theme to a game that flopped: Headhunter Redemption. Its a pumping kick ass tune which is well worth seeking out. All in all, I'd say that a lot of game music is well worth a session on the headphones these days. It shouldn't be looked down upon, in the same way that classical elitists turn their noses up at our beloved film music. Sure, there is still plenty of dross to be found (just like film music then), but you should give it a try, you might like it. Note to Mods: I'm assuming I'm okay posting these two tracks since they are freely available as sample tracks found on the respective game developers websites. I'm not gonna say what game the first track is from, I want you to just listen before you make judgement. Thats why I uploaded it - to hide the title of the actual game. Many of you may recognise it instantly.   10. Agree entirely. Goldsmith was just as adept as Williams at creating themes that stick, when he had the right material to work with. Sadly for Jerry, John got all the '70s - '80s blockbuster work simply because John met Spielberg. I'd have loved to have heard what Jerry would have done with the likes of Indy, ET and Star Wars. Having said that, I suspect only someone as crafty as Williams would have thought up the idea of keeping the Jaws theme so damn simple 8O Goldsmith was just as good as Williams when it came to the action stuff too. But Williams is my favourite simply because his stuff just happened to catch my imagination a little more than Goldsmith.
  11. See I don't think they are. Technically sure, but I'm talking about raw emotion. Both these pieces inspire a profound sense of awe and wonder of the unknown in me. Thats what I'm talking about.

  13. Okay I've tried that. Thanks for the tip I'll see how I get on. To the guy who dislikes Anakins theme: I disagree, sure its not as catchy as we might have expected but its still a superb piece of music. Williams was obviously attempting to create depth and uncertainty to Anakin, which might have worked if the future Vadar wasn't played by a bowl-headed little shit. Could this be a rare case of Williams actually getting the music wrong where the character is concerned? Or should that be the actor. It seems Williams wrote a thoughtful and predictive theme which would suit a disturbed youngster who would eventually become Vader. Williams obviously thought Anakins theme up before he saw what Lucas had spun. Williams thought of a young Vader in the same way that the fans did - basically, a kid with issues. Its not Williams' fault that Lucas created something entirely different in the finished product. If you bare this in mind, Anakins theme is exceptional. Not only does the piece feature a haunting and unusual theme, its also one of Williams' most mature strings works to date.
  14. ARGHHH! I keep trying to reply and take part in my own thread but I keep getting logged out. Its been annoying me for months now. No wonder I hardly frequent this place. Its a shame coz I enjoy the discussions which go on here.
  15. That is indeed a good point, you could say the piece harks back to Williams' jazz days. But that doesn't mean I have to like it Oh and the lyrical version of Can You Read My Mind sounds terrible no matter WHO sings it
  16. For all the sublime music Williams has written for the movies, he has still composed a few duds (hey, even the Don of film music isn't perfect!). I don't mean entire scores, just cues. There is the odd piece he's wrote which I've never gotten into, or I just don't like. "Banning Back Home" from Hook is one of them. It just sounds so un-Williams like - its mall muzak for Christs sake! Obviously some posters are gonna tell me that Williams deliberately wrote this as a lighthearted, easy listening piece and that it suits the film material quite well. Well I'm sure it does, but that doesn't necessarily make it good to listen to on headphones. So what cues do you dislike from the Williams catalogue? Maybe you even dislike whole scores he's wrote?
  17. "SUP-ER---MAN, ITS SUP-ER-MAN" Did he write his fanfare theme consciously this way? Or is it coincidence? The same can be said of Star Wars: STAAAR- WAAARS etc. Even Bill Murray parodied this particular theme years ago on Saturday Night Live via song. Is this the way Williams writes a lot of his themes, or am I just finding happy coincidences?

  19. WTF?! The Raiders March on this album is the best rendition available. Even better than the original, bar a tiny little second during the strings middle section.
  20. Williams' amphetamines dealing method remained as discreet as ever at this years Oscars. Seriously though, that Brokeback guy looks like he's in a serious state of awe. Methinks he's finally met his idol (note how he holds onto him with both hands...). The lucky bastard! That great picture speaks a thousand words. A 'Kodak moment', as it were.
  21. Last I heard, Williams has never actually had an entire score rejected. A few cues yes, but thats about it. I'm pretty sure I read this in a the debut issue of the UK film mag 'Total Film'. Its first scoop interview was with Williams. Not a bad read either.
  22. Did anyone catch her simply astounding, near-flawless (and she's exceptionally beautiful to boot!) winning performance in the Figure Skating event a few days ago? She truly blew me away. And the beautiful violin rendition of Nessun Dorma helped in spades, it sent a shiver down my spine. But I cannot seem to track this particular version down, so does anyone know who it was performed by or even where I can find it?
