  1. 1. Thomas Newman Thomas has probably the most beautiful theme "an American Quilt" that makes me loose always. Well my favourites are from the 90's, I ought to pay attention more to the new scores too. 2. John Powell He has so much potential... X-Men: The Last Stand and earlier music with Gregson-Williams have shown it. Let us hope he will give us more full orchestral gusto that Hollywood needs more. 3. Ryan Shore Future potential. I hope he will make it someday, I really want to hear music like Rex Steele more... so captivating.
  2. Horner's subdued Field of Dreams, very nice during night time.
  3. Do you think there are any particular reasons why not to use clarinet more, is it just because of the films or personal choices?
  4. Lincoln is the one I wait. Historical dramas and epic films are my cup of tea.
  5. Are there people who like to read Tintin, a boring Belgian who is even more cardboard than George Stobbard? No money for Mr. Spielberg from me.
  6. Yeah John Williams is the bastion of Western music, he cannot use clarinet as a solo instrument.
  7. I do believe it is. The Boomtzzzzz doesn't use a timpani, but a bass drum. Williams does have an occasional fondness for timpani solos, often even having the timpani play a theme. That's cool. I love that term "The Boomtzzzzz". Sounds like an orchestra name "Johnny Williams and The Boomtzzzzz".
  8. Hm I think I will give it a chance. Everyone seems to like it.
  9. I think we can connect oboe and Thomas Newman. He sure likes it and I too. The way he used it in "How to Make an American Quilt" is hauntingly beautiful.
  10. Goldsmith had his share of timpani and very effectively he used them too. Mark you said it first.
  11. Also I usually hear the harp in Williams' scores. Does anyone else use it in the same scale?
  12. It requires lot of concentration to notice these things, to list possible ratios for solo instruments for example. I find it interesting to know though. I have not paid much attention about his earlier, and it might be futile also.
  13. I have been wondering about styles composers have for instrumentation: what instruments does Williams (or any composer) use more and what less? Do you hear an oboe in Goldsmith's scores often and so on. One might say that it depends on the film he is composing not having preferences and that could be true. But still do you honorable film music fans think that there are certain styles visible concerning instruments?
  14. Ryan Shore is mentioned here. That guy deserves more attention, one of the future stars. I have not listened to Headspace, but I soon I will. His Rex Steele shows, how energetic he can be too.
  15. I shuddered too. Well Mr. Cosman I think you have an unwanted acolyte before you. Oh Atlantis, I would say maybe three stars. Hard to say high or low points.
  16. Ah nice to know something new information. And he used it with skill indeed! The Main Title from the Masters of the Universe is the best heroic fanfare ever composed to cinema. It is worthy of labelling as big deal.
  17. In the Right Stuff it may be the case, one can be also that Conti did not have much time to compose for that film. He saved time.
  18. I was about to mention Skeletor the Destroyer, I guess some can hear Mars the Bringer of War in that pace of the theme. I personally do not hear direct hints.
  19. Better indeed. Actually I do not care much for the Rocky stuff. He has done much better music.
  20. Actually watching the film might damage your listening experience, it almost happened to me. So let us not think the score as a part of this awful movie but enjoy the music.
  21. This is the moment I have been waiting for fellows: a kingly score by Conti, the Masters of the Universe soon within our grasp! You ought not to hesitate in this case, easily the best score by Conti and top 5 score of all time which defined my film music listening in my childhood. When I saw this film the musical aspect permeated my mind above all and I was not able to think but one thing: to acquire this film in order to listen the score. It was my first boost to the cinematic music and great impact it did too. I must buy this no doubt. Great news.
  22. To me the orchestra does not do its job as good as it has to. I very much would like to hear a new version with LSO & Horner conducting. I do not say that it ruins the score not at all, but there are some moments like Ride of the Firemares, in which some trumpet parts seemed to be too challenging for the player.
  23. hopefully it will stay uncharted, hopefully Lincoln will never make it into production. as for doing Tintin like the Polar Express and Beowulf, UGH. I'd rather have something new and not more of the same. Lincoln sounds like more of the same, Spielberg throwing darts at history and making movies where the dart lands. Will Spielberg have the guts to show Lincoln as the manic depresive racist he was? Steven Spielberg the "Historical" director not quite as appealing as what he used to be. Seriously look at his record of historical/period films. Sugarland Express ***/5stars 1941 ** Empire of the Sun ***-1/2 Schindler's List **** SPR ***-1/2 Amistad **-1/2 Catch Me If You Can ***-1/2 Munich *-1/2 I left out the 3 Indy films, and CP because while they are period pieces they are generally fiction. I very much doubt Spielberg will describe possible homosexuality of Lincoln. He will make this film for republican conservatives.
  24. Actually I was about to write has King Mark voted yet.
