The original from Osgiliath Invaded is clearly better. I mean there is such a great pace to it that you can't help but be swept away. But you've got to love the kickass music that follows after 4:29. Its the Gondor theme in action as Gandalf slowly ascends levels of Minas Tirith. Thats such an awesome scene!

And btw, everyone knows the most kick-ass rendition of the Fellowship theme is when its done with the choir in For Frodo!

They are extremely similar

Yes but the one in Osgiliath is more driven with the pulsating strings and flutes in the background, the 'revised' version sound less action-ey :P

The two were both composed for the same footage - re-ordering of the scenes in the edit necessitated re-recording. Shore's preference throughout was to re-record to new edits rather than editorially confirm existing recordings, although ultimately this proved to be impossible throughout due to the manic post-production schedule of ROTK.

It's worthwhile to note that the 'Osgiliath Invaded' version (the earlier one) needs to keep the energy going - Pippin and Gandalf's arrival is set to coincide with the retreat and has the appropriate urgency - this wasn't really required in the final version.
