STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION Encounter at Farpoint / The Arsenal of Freedom

Expanded Collector's Edition

gnpd8084.jpg

Fans of Star Trek TM were thrilled in 1987 to welcome the launch of a new series expanding the Trek universe: Star Trek: The Next Generation. Soon after, GNP Crescendo Records was equally excited to release Dennis McCarthy’s score for the opening two-hour pilot episode, “Encounter at Farpoint.” Now, GNP Crescendo is releasing an Expanded Collector’s Edition of that same pioneering score, including even more of McCarthy’s dramatic music, newly mixed and mastered from the original multi-track elements under the supervision of the composer.

McCarthy—who has written more music for the franchise than any other composer—wrote over 40 minutes of brash and colorful music for “Encounter at Farpoint,” establishing the bright, dynamic style he would maintain throughout the show’s first season. He made frequent use of Alexander Courage’s iconic Star Trek fanfare, as well as a new, heroic theme for the captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise, Jean-Luc Picard. Typical of early Next Generation scores, the music manifests a post-Star Wars sound, symphonic and often reflective of the hammering rhythms and surging chords of Holst’s “Mars, the Bringer of War” from The Planets in its treatment of action and space battles.

As a bonus, this new CD also includes the world premiere release of McCarthy’s score to “The Arsenal of Freedom,” an action-packed episode from late in the first season. The CD concludes with several bonus and alternate cues from “Encounter at Farpoint”—including McCarthy’s unused main title theme (which was replaced with Jerry Goldsmith’s theme from Star Trek: The Motion Picture for the series). This latest release in GNP Crescendo’s continuing commitment to preserving the musical legacy of Star Trek includes a 16-page booklet with informative notes by Jeff Bond, author of The Music of Star Trek—incorporating comments from the composer.

I guess they figure they might as well get more Trek out while they can and its hot. Certainly not a bad thing, although not sure if I am liking mixing different episodes onto one disc. The previous BOBW made sense because it was a two parter.

It's nothing new for GNP Crescendo. Volume 3 from 1993 contained cues from the episodes Yesterday's Enterprise, Unification I & II, and Hollow Pursuits, but the common thread was that they were composed by Dennis McCarthy. Volume 4 featured material from seven episodes, all by Jay Chattaway. And of course, LLL's recent TNG Volume 1 covered both composers plus a smattering of others.

Oh, I'm aware they did it before, was just hoping that wouldn't be revisited. I prefer the multi box sets of various episodes.

Well between The Ron Jones Project and the various episodes covered in LLL's box set, and the episodes not previously released by GNP Crescendo....is there any decent TNG music left worth buying?

I agree with Jason this is out of the blue.

Arsenal Of Freedom has never been represented on CD before. However I'm surprised and happy to see it with this release. It's a fun episode and has a fun score too.

Also yes there are still episodes that haven't been covered yet. I doubt they will ALL get released.

I didn't hear that.

According to MV the TNG Volume 1 box set sold well. If the Ron Jones didn't I would say the reason would be its price. I guarantee the Original Series box set isn't doing well either because of price too, not because the interest isn't there.

The Ron Jones set is fantastic, but could have done better if it was spread across volumes so people could justify spending the $ in smaller amounts over time.

I didn't buy the TOS set because there's only a few episodes I wanted and it would have collected dust on my CD shelf. I bought the Ron Jones set since most of those I really wanted for a long time.

Yes jwb is correct about the TNG Volume 1 from LLL had sold very well. MV himself posted on FSM saying such and dispelling rumors about it selling badly.
