This is one of my all-time favourite pieces by John Williams. I absolutely love it. It's a testament of the masterful composer he is.

Williams originally wrote Esplanade Overture in 1981, as a kind of "comedy overture" for the Boston Pops. He then reutilized it as thematic material in the Monsignor score (probably because the film was so awful and he didn't want to waste a lot of his time!). The "Meeting in Sicily" piece on the Monsignor soundtrack album is more or less the "Esplanade Overture". There are little differences, btw. For example, in "Esplanade" the introduction is a bit longer and the finale is even more impressive, with the horns blowing out the theme on very high register just before the coda.

It would be very nice if Williams or someone else will do a proper recording of the original piece. It's really one of his all-time best.
