Lewya 361 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 A pretty nice interview - http://www.scpr.org/programs/the-frame/2015/09/03/44363/composer-david-newman-remembers-playing-violin-for/ DaveOlden and Incanus 2
Gnome in Plaid 219 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Great interview. Also, somehow I never knew that David Newman was one of the Newmans.
nightscape94 967 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 If you ever see a Newman involved in scoring, err on the side of assumption DaveOlden 1
chuck 155 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Great interview. Also, somehow I never knew that David Newman was one of the Newmans.I guess you didn't know that he and Coolman are also related, huh?
Quintus 5,727 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Funny that the interview didn't bother to mention Thomas when speaking about the legacy.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I think he's the best of the family....
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,977 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 You must be joking!
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 What, what's wrong with Thomas?
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Randy writes better songs that's for sure, but Thomas is a more interesting and individual composer than any of his relatives, alive or dead.
Thor 9,308 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Randy writes better songs that's for sure, but Thomas is a more interesting and individual composer than any of his relatives, alive or dead.Agreed!David is also very different from Thomas, personality-wise. OK, I've never met Thomas, but from what I hear, he's rather shy. Whereas David, who I HAVE met on numerous occasions, is the opposite -- very outrovert and talkative.
nightscape94 967 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Oh Alfred, how quickly they forget.
Thor 9,308 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 I ADORE Alfred Newman, but he's not a terribly original composer compared to Thomas.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Yeah, and I mean this in a totally non-dismissive way, but he was just another big Golden Age dude, really.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,977 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Like John Williams?
Thor 9,308 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 To be fair, he was THE "Golden Age dude", given his power and resume. But over the years, I've come to recognize a few trademarks in his style as well. I'm particularly drawn to his religious scores, like GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD, THE SONG OF BERNADETTE, THE ROBE etc. Bliss!Waxman will always remain my favourite of the Golden Agers, but ol' Alfred has a special place in my heart.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,977 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 No love for Herrmann?
Thor 9,308 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 Sure, but he came onboard a BIT later, and he's so unique in his sound anyway, that it's hard to include him with the Straussian neo-classicists.Incidentally, Alfred was the composer who gave John Williams one of his first involvements in the film biz (with CAROUSEL), just to keep it Williams-related.
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted September 4, 2015 Posted September 4, 2015 How Green Was My Valley is fantastic.
Sharkissimo 1,975 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Sure, but he came onboard a BIT later, and he's so unique in his sound anyway, that it's hard to include him with the Straussian neo-classicists.Neo-romantics, dude. Neo-romantics.And Herrmann was a neo-romantic too. It just his sound was drawn was influenced more by his contemporariness - Delius, Ireland, Honegger, Barber, VRW etc.
Thor 9,308 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Neo-romantics, sorry.I'm not comfortable with putting Herrmann in that category, though (even though he obviously had the ability to tap into it now and then). He's far more modern. Ricard 1
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,977 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Herrmann, as the maverick that he was, defies easy categorization! Ricard 1
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Nah, he's repetitive enough to easily categorize!
Code 000. Destruct. 0. 4,261 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 North, with the harmonic/orchestral color setting turned down to 2%.
