MSM 194 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 I'd like to announce the Dutch premiere of John Williams' Flight to Neverland from Hook (Signature Edition). Our Groningen Student Orchestra MIRA will perform the piece on December 7th (real premiere) and December 15th (second concert) in Bedum and Groningen (Holland) respectively, conducted by chief conductor Arnaud Oosterbaan. Also Dvorak's Cello Concerto op. 104 and Brahms 1st Symphony will be played (cello: Kate Harris). It was me who lobbied heavily to get Flight to Neverland programmed and I finally succeeded! Now I think it would be a nice idea if in (the front row of) the audience there will be some (Dutch) JWFans to reinforce the JW Fandom! (Of course we have to arrange some T-shirts or something like that )We could meet in the interval, and of course everyone is invited to the after party (location not yet settled, but it will be in Groningen). If a lot of you plan to come, I can possibly arrange some group discount.Hope to see you at one of the concerts (the second one is the main concert)! If you have any questions, please ask. More information on the orchestra and the program can be found at our website: www.gsomira.nl (select 'English' > 'concerts' in the menu for the program). Feel free to post at the 'gastenboek' (guestbook) as well.
nightscape94 968 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Awesome, I'm like a stone's throw from Groningen.Tim
MSM 194 Posted November 1, 2005 Author Posted November 1, 2005 I am at least happy that you looked up where Groningen is
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Wow! Sounds great. There is never enough JW music performed live. I am happy you succeeded in lobbying the piece to be part of the concert. Persistence is a virtue.Only unfortunate detail is that I live in Finland
Omen II 1,300 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Awesome, I'm like a stone's throw from Groningen.TimTim,Perhaps you could book a Flight to Nederland. Good stuff, by the way, MSM. Were you able to get the orchestral parts easily or did someone have to transcribe the music by hand?

Were you able to get the orchestral parts easily or did someone have to transcribe the music by hand?I ordered the complete set (score + parts) at www.sheetmusicplus.com for $425.00.
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 That sheet music costs a fortune I knew music was expensive but damn!
Luke Skywalker 2,385 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Well MSM just can make a re-recording of the whole score with that
MSM 194 Posted November 1, 2005 Author Posted November 1, 2005 Well, actually, I hadn't have to pay myself...the orchestra did
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Still. Does that price include only Flight to Never Land complete orchestral score and nothing else?
Maestoso 0 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Ah, a JW piece performed in Groningen. That's cool, MSM. I live in Groningen, so I might come to the concert. "de Oosterpoort" is a nice location too. As a JWfan, I would love to hear some JW performed live.
Mr. Breathmask 624 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Would be nice, but even in a small country like this, Groningen isn't that close to home for me.- Marc, who notices the Dutchies just keep on coming.
Incanus 5,890 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Apparently there is strong support for JW among the Dutch. Now we need few of us gloomy Finns to even things a bit
Snowster 23 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Well, I'm gloomy... (and a Finn too...)The Helsinki Philharmonic has been playing JW annually for the last three years during the Helsinki Festival, in the Film Music Concerts part of the Children's Festival.2003 'Star Wars' concert (they played SW and E.T.)2004 'Lord Of the Rings' concert (Indiana Jones)2005 'Harry Potter' concert-Snowster

Mutta terve jälleen! It's nice to have few Finns here on the MB. And I see you live in the same city as I do.I know about the concerts. I have attended all but the last HP concert. Did you attend that one or the previous ones? And what was in the programme? Atso Almila does a nice job with the music selection (about 60% Williams ). Unfortunately the concerts are held in conjunction with the Children's Festival so they are usually only hour long. I think film music deserves full length concerts instead of these shorter performances. But the Helsinki Philharmonics are pretty good performing the often tricky film music and I have to say I am proud of that orchestra. Few weak performances but mainly precise and emotional interpretations. I just sent Philharmonics some ideas and feedback about film music concerts. I hope they keep palying movie music.
hornist 1,261 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 ...and in Tampere filharmonia we had few weeks ago nice concert playing Raiders march andcouple of Harry Potter pieces(also some Lords of of the ring stuff)! hyvä suomi

I had no idea Tampere Philharmonics performed film music. I would have wanted to hear that. It would not have been such a stretch to travel to Tampere by train. I wish I would have known about the concert. But as you said hyvä Suomi!

Incanus 5,890 Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Really. I would have gone and attended if Goldsmith himself would have come to conduct his scores here in Finland. A great shame he had to cancel. I seem to remember Goldsmith visited Oulu many years ago and gave a concert there. My friend attended that one (he was about 13 years old or younger at the time 8O ).

I was about 11 years old so I do not think that matters that much anymore I am just sorry I was not aware of Goldsmith when I was that young
MSM 194 Posted November 2, 2005 Author Posted November 2, 2005 Still. Does that price include only Flight to Never Land complete orchestral score and nothing else?It is the JW Signature Edition (blue cover) orchestral score of only this piece, but including a set of parts.
MSM 194 Posted November 2, 2005 Author Posted November 2, 2005 Ah, a JW piece performed in Groningen. That's cool, MSM. I live in Groningen, so I might come to the concert. "de Oosterpoort" is a nice location too. As a JWfan, I would love to hear some JW performed live.Maestoso, that's would be cool! You can buy a ticket from me in advance booking (voorverkoop), it will be cheaper. You study in Groningen?

MSM 194 Posted November 7, 2005 Author Posted November 7, 2005 So who else will be there? Stefancos? Chris? Roald?
nightscape94 968 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 What is the concert arrangement of "Flight to Neverland" like anyway? Do you know or are you just waiting to see the actual music to find out? Does it have the celesta part for Tinkerbell's theme, is that included? It would be cool to here the triumphant version of the childhood theme at the end of the piece, but alas, I am not a stone's throw away from Groningen as a previously stated.Tim, who lied.

It is on Williams on Williams: The Classic Spielberg Scores (for which it was recorded) and on 1969-1999: Greatest Hits. We play that very arrangement. Yes, it is quite different from the Flight to Neverland on the OST. It doesn't have the Tinkerbell's music.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,388 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 So who else will be there? Stefancos? Chris? Roald?Dec 7th is out of the question. Not completely sure about the 15th but December is a grueling month for me, work wise. Do we have a Dutchie here named Chris?
nightscape94 968 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 I think he's talking about Alfonso, who's German. Close enough.Tim
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,388 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 It's not the same thing, you know.
nightscape94 968 Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 Perhaps I should have utilized an emoticon to portray my sarcasm.Tim...
MSM 194 Posted November 8, 2005 Author Posted November 8, 2005 Chris Afonso I meant indeed. I once attended one of his orchestra's concerts, so he owes me this one Stefan, would be cool if you could come at the 15th. Finally I will get the chance to meet the only Master...
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 12,388 Posted December 12, 2005 Posted December 12, 2005 Not a single free day in sight for me for the rest of this year...and then some.
MSM 194 Posted December 13, 2005 Author Posted December 13, 2005 And? Does it mean you're able to attend our concert...?
MSM 194 Posted December 15, 2005 Author Posted December 15, 2005 Ok...there are so many Dutch JWFans, and no-one is coming to attend our concert tonight? That is sad...
