  1. Yeah, that's a good one too, Bloodboal. I have no problem with the Kaplans disliking Zimmer and I would even be open for a satire if they had done it as cleverly as their other stuff. But this was just juvenile and offensive, IMO.
  2. No, if it's funny, it's funny. See SOUTH PARK clip above. But if there's no cleverness behind it -- like in the Kaplan video -- it just becomes childish and annoying. Big difference. It steps over the line from being funny and satirical to being offensive to Zimmer, Zimmer fans and everyone who appreciates well-directed and clever comedy.
  3. Probably wouldn't be so funny if someone had done the same with a Williams video, eh? i.e. basically boiling it down to a series of 'boom-tss'-es on the music side with some derogatory, scrolling remarks about the same ol' Holst and Wagner rip-offs. Stuff like that -- strawman rhetorics -- are SOOO easy to do, but also very childish and ultimately annoying -- whether you're a fan of the composer or not. By the way, here's a GOOD example on how to do a satire on the sound:
  4. Sorry, I found that video stupid in every possible way. And I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge Zimmer fan and am personally offended (although there's obviously a little bit of that), but because I don't think it's particularly clever as satire either. It basically boils down to childish namecalling & sandbox rhetorics.
  5. Not much. He wrote "Lapti Nek" for his father's RETURN OF THE JEDI, plus some other source cues for the same film. He's done a bunch of solo albums and session work, but nothing I've paid particular attention to. He's also tried his hands at scoring -- albeit briefly -- among other things the main theme for the series MIRACLES:
  6. Really? Joseph is one of the 'legends' of Toto. Perhaps you also didn't know that he was Simba's adult singing voice in THE LION KING?
  7. I wouldn't say it's obscure, at least not compared to some of those old 60's things I like to talk about. But it isn't often talked about, that's true.
  8. Great to see those guys have a sense of deprecating humour!
  9. Wait, was Satellite Celebration written for a film? No, no....sorry for the misunderstanding. I was just underlining NON because I wanted to focus this on the non-film work. Since there already is a bootleg version of this (albeit crappy-sounding) and a reworked version that has been properly recorded, I would much rather see a proper (commercial) recording of other things, some of which don't even have bootleg availability. However -- by 'composition' are you talking about a single track (like a fanfare) or does that also encompass unrecorded concert works?
  10. True. It's not like it would ever happen. But the similarities between the two are quite interesting.
  11. It's a great piece, no doubt (both versions), but there are several other unrecorded NON-film pieces that I'd rather see recorded properly first.
  12. Very funny.... Actually, if this film (and score) was to be paired with anything, it would have to be CONRACK. CONRACK and ROSEWOOD both star Jon Voight as the only white man in a black community trying to do his best to overcome the prejudice and difficulties of the time. And both are scored by John Williams.
  13. No, I'm not buying it, but I doubt that comes as a surprise to anyone. What this news has done, however, is to play the original soundtrack again.
  14. Screw the dinosaurs! I just want more of the great mood. MOOD, DAMMIT!
  15. Yeah, I know about the CD too. I was just wondering if anyone had heard the whole Marsalis CD, and what they thought of it -- compared to the Williams.
  16. Speaking of which, I never got around to hearing Marsalis' original score -- which I believe was released under a different name (i.e. not the film's name). Is it any good?
  17. Well, I have no opinon on an expansion, but I'm up for a discussion of the score itself....not often talked about. I particularly love "Look Down Lord", which was originally written by Williams (but sounds like an existing deep south hymn). It taps into Williams' socalled religious sound, which is my favourite sound of his.
  18. Hmmm....peculiar choice. Don't get me wrong, I love the score (both in the film and the soundtrack album), but the 'expansion' idea for this seems strange, even more than usual.
  19. Does he have that right? To veto a rerecording, I mean (even if that rerecording was constructed from the film and not from the score sheets)?
  20. Thor, have faith as I do! ;) back to the music: but since John Williams will have the score in his home, why should anyone make the score from scratch? Because the alternative is to break into his house to get it? Seriously, though, I don't know what's holding a recording up. Could be Williams. Could be other things. My favourite question to Williams would be about his early days and whether or not he's proud or embarrased about the interest in it. STORIA DI UNA DONNA would fall into that category. So would THE KATHERINE REED STORY (I assume he has the sketches for that too).
  21. Damn, I thought this was news about a new source for the score beyond the youtube thingie. The only way it could be rerecorded is if someone found the film, listened to the score intently, made sketches (John Morgan-style) and rerecorded it. But as you all know, the film seems to as lost as those old DOCTOR WHO episodes.
