  1. No problem, I figured that was easiest. ~Sturgis
  2. I've been in theaters with numerous crying babies, annoying loud teenagers, misbehaving toddlers, loud chatting folks, loud parents, and an unceasing lap-drummer. Not all at the same time, thank God. Still, though, you can't beat the feeling of seeing a movie in the theater. And I love the candy. Btw, after thinking more about Lady in the Water, I give it a B+. ~Sturgis, excited to see it a second time
  3. Though there are many funny moments in this film, the group of people I mentioned was being obnoxious during the emotional scenes, and it was very distracting. ~Sturgis
  4. Lady in the Water Upon initial veiwing, I really liked it, though mine and "Ray's" veiwing was rather spoiled by some stupid laughers. Anyway, I really liked Bryce and Paul, and JNH's phoenomial score added so much subtle emotion to the film. I really liked the climax, how everyone was brought together, and there was a bit of humor, too, it was just a joyous climactic sequence. Plus, "The Great Eatlon" kicks ass. A- ~Sturgis, who will see it again tomorrow
  5. The season started with M:I-3 and so far has gone through Pirates. Please include all of the following (if you've seen them), in addition to any others you've seen this summer. Mine are already in order. 1. Superman Returns 2. X-Men: The Last Stand 3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 4. The DaVinci Code 5. Mission: Impossible - III 6. Poseiden 7. Click 8. The Break-Up 9. Cars ~Sturgis
  6. 1. How awesome are the glasses? 2. Do they affect his ability to compose? 3. Did J.K. Rowling steal the design for Harry's glasses? Discuss. ~Sturgis, who says five
  7. Cars Pretty good, but not quite up to Pixar's usual standards. B Saving Private Ryan Wow. A ~Sturgis
  8. I planned on going to Dead Man's Chest with a friend, and I knew, I KNEW we should have bought tickets in advance, but it was his family's thing, so I thought they would. We were going to go at 7:50 on Friday, and when we got there, the four shows from 7:00 to 11:00 were totally sold out. I've never seen any theater so crowded in my life. I was extremely disappointed, because I was really looking forward to seeing it, but we decided to see Click instead. Then right when we got to the ticket counter, the 7:35 showing of Click had literally just sold out. It was a good thing I wasn't armed. In the end, my dad generously took me at 10:00 that night at a different theater, so I got to see it. Anyway, I wish I'd have thought to see the first movie again before this one. I want to watch it before I see Dead Man's Chest again. Toward the beginning, I thought there were too many callbacks to the first, like Elizabeth's father breaking the lamp and hiding it, or the reference to the dog with the keys. I did, however, like the shot that I believe was an introduction to the bar where the big fight takes place, with the pirates teetering on barrels and the man rising out of the well, which was a nice tribute to the ride. I thought the film was pretty good, but a little hard to follow towards the beginning. With the first movie, I really loved the first half, but I thought it lost a little momentum as it went. I found Dead Man's Chest to be the opposite. The first 45 minutes dragged a bit (although Jack Sparrow's entrance was priceless LOL), but I think it picked up and didn't stop from there on. Now, I have to say I really didn't like Will's character in this movie. I couldn't see his reasoning for just leaving immediately to find Jack, and it seemed like kind of a weak excuse to reunite all the characters. I didn't enjoy the subplot with him and his father that much, either, and I thought Will just wasn't that likeable a character. Elizabeth was considerably better, though I didn't really understand her little thing with Jack. Was that just another plan to get him where she wanted him, or was she genuinely interested in him? Davy Jones was an okay villain, but I agree with some that he was a bit bland, albeit pretty cool-looking. The highlight sequence of the film was the fight between Norrington, Jack, and Will on the giant wheel. I really liked how it progressed from everyone fighting everyone to the main characters back at the boat fighting Jones's crew. It was a really well-done action scene. Jack Sparrow was once again the best thing about the movie. I loved his entrace, as I said, and his humor was very well-done. I was glad he had the "opportunity to do the right thing," and that he hadn't been a good guy, per say, up until that point, only looking out for himself, though it was a bit predictable that he would come back to the ship in the end. I liked the use of slow motion there, and the shot of him unsheathing his sword in front of the Kraken (which I thought looked great), and the next one from the side were both awsome. I think the music worked very well there, too. I hope we will see something new out of his character in the third installment, because as delightful as his performance is, it could get a little old. The last scene of the film was fantastic, and makes me really anxious for the final installment. It sounds like At World's End (the rumored title) will be a bit like X2 in that the somewhat consistent villain will be helping the good guys. back, as well. The score was overall better than the first. I liked Jack's new theme, and the abundant use of the "playful theme" was a real treat. Most people here know my stance on the first score: it's enjoyably crappy, and I must admit, I liked the deliciously bland Kraken theme in this one . The few times when Bruckheimer actually let Zimmer go free, I think Zimmer went totally crazy and flipped out, producing the surprising but delightful cues like when the prisoners are in the swinging cages and the big bar fight. I plan on buying the score soon. Overall, the film was about 20-30 minutes too long and Will acted like a freak, but I'm still really excited for the third chapter. B ~Sturgis
  9. I've seen the film twice and I loved it. I've never liked the original, in particular the bumbling villains and the ridiculous tagged-on ending. (In fact, when I saw the train set collapsing in Superman Returns, it reminded me of the silly-looking miniatures in Superman: The Movie.) I loved the way the new film was shot. In particular, the scene in the beginning with Lex and Kitty on the yacht, and the rooftop scene with Lois and Clark. I thought the plane/shuttle scene was innovative and extremely well-done (the effects were amazing, and it was very intense). The progression was very good, and I toally bought dorky Clark and frazzled Lois. Jimmy was good, too, a decent comic relief. Kevin Spacey was simply sublime as Lex Luther. I really loved him in particular in the scene with him and Lois on the yacht when he explains his master plan. He was a villain that actually felt like a real bad guy, and I liked his little possey, as well, Kitty in particular. The main problem I had with the film was how quiet the Krypton theme was at the beginning. Ottman's score did a great job of paying tribute to Williams' themes (though I know, of the main theme, only the fanfare is used in the film). He modified the love theme a bit, and I thought that sounded really nice. I really liked the sparing use of the Smallville theme in the beginning, and I couldn't help but get giddy when I heard the first "bum-ba-dum" in the opening credits . Superman's personal theme was glorious, and I liked the ominous Luther theme, as well. One moment in the score that stands out in particular is the flashback to Clark when he's running through the crops; it's absolutely wonderful. I think Ottman did a great job with this score. Superman Returns was very well done, my favorite film of the summer so far, and in my humble opinion, better than the original. A- ~Sturgis
  10. Tomorrow? Is it early morning in Israel? ~Sturgis
  11. Indeed the movie was great. I agree with Tim 100%. I didn't know the score was by Powell, but it was subtle and appropriate. After the end, with that last intense chord, it seemed like no one in the theater knew exactly what to do (btw, the end of the film was tremendous). ~Sturgis
  12. United 93 A really good film, not much else to say. A ~Sturgis
  13. My predictions: 1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest 2. The DaVinci Code 3. Superman Returns 4. X-Men: The Last Stand 5. Mission: Impossible III 6. Poseidon ~Sturgis, who doesn't think Cars will actually do very well
  14. It's called sarcasm. I'm not the one who thinks people should be banned for stuff like that. ~Sturgis
  15. I guess Vosk should be banned now, for promoting violence. ~Sturgis
  16. Jurassic Park Enjoyed it as much as I always do. I turned the surround sound up at the arrival to the island and got goosebumps. A Scary Movie 4 Some funny parts, but far too much pointless slapstick. C The Sentinel Mostly enjoyable . . . except it ended with some dumb song. It was pointless, as it just segues into the score in the end credits, and it ruined the end of the movie. B- King Kong This actually proves Peter Jackson is not the master everyone seems to think he is. With large plotholes and undeveloped, cut-short storylines, King Kong is far from perfect and far too long. For what it is, it's very good. But what it is is too long. Dazzling effects, sure, but they were sometimes just too "big." The DVD has the entire, very interesting and intricate series of web diaries, along with some other features I have yet to watch. B ~Sturgis
  17. Are you sure? I know Atlantis is, but I got Treasure Planet in 2004 at Best Buy. ~Sturgis, who was introduced to JNH by Peter Pan, and thinks that to be his best score, or at least the one that encompases all that is great about him
  18. Star Wars is one of the most important scores in the history of film music, so I must bid good riddance to CE3K. ~Sturgis
  19. The Godfather Wow. It's a truly brilliant film. It just had that feeling, everything was perfect, every moment was exactly how it was planned out, nothing felt like it was left out or like it shouldn't have been in the film. Every minute is simply classic. It was quite a jarring change Michael underwent over the course of the film. The baptism scene was incredible, and I really loved the end of the movie. Even though I had to watch it on VHS in full-screen, I loved it, but no matter what I thought of the film, there's no way I could give it anything other than an A+ ~Sturgis
  20. I have to say CE3K. These three are probably Williams' best-known themes, but I've known Jaws and Star Wars since I was like four years old, so . . . ~Sturgis
  21. Sorry, I don't know either. But I think you'll enjoy Narnia a lot, Tim. ^_^ ~Sturgis
  22. Failure to Launch My parents wanted to see it, so I went, and I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. B ~Sturgis, who's going to watch The Godfather with his dad tonight for the first time
