  1. But at least they were released concurrently. The tactic of withholding the BETTER release for a later stage is a Universal thing, forcing people to buy it. Most other studios release the two versions at the same time, or even the 1-disc at a later stage at a heavily reduced price for those who aren't interested in bonus features.
  2. They didn't put all that work into a tentpole Spielberg DVD release for only one round of prints. It'll be back. This tactic is just another way for them to convince fans to get the 1-disc version, under the assumption the 2-disc was a limited edition collectable never to return. Just imagine the horror when it pops out in December.
  3. It's not all Burtt's fault. Remember, the guy did Munich and the music mixing in that film was wonderful. Hell, the sound effects were drowned out in half the music cues! (Bonding, Bearing the Burden, Munich 1972, Remembering Munich) But Munich is also an excellently spotted film, albeit a rushed effort for Williams, and is a drama, not a sci-fi epic.
  4. The sad thing is that most will simply buy the 1-disc edition without knowing the whole story.
  5. No director commentary, only a brief introduction about the movie before it plays. Universal WILL double dip this film, rest assured. It was a relative box office bomb by Spielberg standards, and Universal will be resorting to the lowest tactics to make a return. The 2-disc edition will come out within the next year in all non-region 1 areas. Teach them a lesson and copy a rental DVD to tide you over until the proper release comes out.
  6. Flags of our Fathers? Spielberg produced, Eastwood directed (previous collaborator), and the hot pick for Oscar buzz next year. And his work on Saving Private Ryan was nothing short of equisite.
  7. I think a movie's brilliance is the combination of all factors of production, including music. If the film's brilliant with the music as is, it was obviously made that way by the director for good reason. Your perception of what might make a brilliant soundtrack might not necessarily make the film better. Batman Begins is a good example of this, as is Saving Private Ryan.
  8. Better than the first, but still remnants of the first that give me the shits, even a reprise of the god-awful "we are cursed men" cue.
  9. And for the record, I agree.. Davis' action cues are excellent. Better than a lot of recent Williams' stuff.
  10. It's just a score of wasted opportunities. That's what bugs me... it could have developed further what JW started, but it was an excessive rehash of familiar themes. It's not just anti-every-composter-except-Williams resentment, but he would have done a much more interesting score. It has its moments.. like the militaristic JP3 theme, and the Mercenary theme cleverly integrating the Visitor Centre theme (why he chose to do this is a completely illogical choice, but it's a great theme).
  11. In what instances were the brass sections removed? And why isn't the complete end credits suite on the promo? That always bugged me... his ending rendition of Journey to the Island is quite satisfying.
  12. Worse, there wasn't even a statement of the Lost World theme. The movie bloody took place on Isla Sorna, dammit! Ugh...
  13. The family theme is about the only thing Davis wrote that was new, is it not? It's a nice theme.. Nash Calling is about the only inspired cue of the soundtrack.
  14. Is there a reason this entire score, on recent listening, sounds so... minimalistic? Like a cheap made-for-television score? Don Davis has proven himself with large orchestral scores, but JP3 is so simplistically orchestrated and written. It completely lacks the depth and grandoise nature of Williams' first score, and the texture of the second. Was there a shortage of percussionists?
  15. What a crappy cover. Whoever designed the poster has absolutely no sense of layout.
  16. Yeah, the A.I. OST. I also was so disappointed when I realised it was completely missing from the OST. Really no excuses for that, given the horrendous For Always tracks... Apparently a lot of the quality material left off the OST was a last minute decision caused by the inclusion of the solo and duet versions of For Always on the OST. Gah, what an awful decision... FORTUNATELY, we're lucky enough to have the Academy Promo which contains all the renditions of the "Memories"/"Yearning" theme. It's absolutely my favourite, most heart-wrenching piano motif in JW's career, ESPECIALLY in A Drive. Powerful...
