  1. I couldn't be bothered to edit this music since we are going to have both of the complete scores by the end of the year. I am just too lazy plus I do not want to jinx it.
  2. I would not have known it is Johnny in that picture if you had not said it 8O Boy he has changed!
  3. Listen to the HP Christmas music and then come to me and speak about saccharin. Hymn to the Fallen is beautiful and there is nothing sugary about it.
  4. You obviously have not watched Babylon 5 then? He played a very memorable main character. One of the best in the series infact.
  5. Talk about bad luck! There is one of the most sought after Williams scores.
  6. Nothing new but I did not notice that thread when I reported this piece of good news.
  7. All new Williams scores are great news but unfortunately FSM CDs are outside my reach since I do not have a credit card.
  8. Good work! I especially loved that Vader's theme at the end. The transition from the slower variation of the theme to the Duel in the Desert was good and I could not have thought a better one myself. Thanks for this piece!
  9. This from the FSM page FSM February 28 Not With My Wife You Don't/Any Wednesday - John Williams/George Duning - Film Score Monthly I have not heard this one but is this really the top priority when it comes to Williams scores. I am grateful of course but still.
  10. Actually any older and less known Williams score found in Finland is a find. I found scores like Sabrina and Empire of the Sun by chance in our stores and after I bought them the stores have not ordered more of them so they are finds IMO. But in the age of internet shopping acquisition of older scores and more rare releases has become so much easier.
  11. Well shyness in the entertaiment business can be harmful for your public image. You can come across as a jerk even if you just are shy and reclusive and do not like the acclaim and glamouring in the spotlight. We all are uncomfortable on some level around new people and situations and I imagine Williams is no different as you said tony69.
  12. But there is no rationality to this poll is there.
  13. What is the best extended musical sequence on the CR in your opinion? I mean a cue or a sequence that Shore extended or wrote complitely new music for the EE. One thing that sticks to my mind as the most improved Extended scene is the Amon Hen sequence. There the longer version of the scene gave Shore an opporturnity of embellish his composition and make it even more dramatic and climactic than in the TE. The new choir music adds a huge impact on the music and lends an epic feeling to the whole scene that is even better than the original composition. I was totally blown away when I first time heard the music outside the film. The continuous Uruk-hai/Orc five beat pattern pounding beneath the surface of the music creates a constant feeling of threat and danger and drives the scene forward as relentlessly as the Orcs are pursuing the Fellowship and the Ring. Aragorn's theme comes to fore as he sets to defend Frodo and the Nature's theme appears to herald the sudden understanding of Merry and Pippin that Frodo is leaving them and the courage they find to lure the Uruk-hai away from Frodo. And all the while the Isengard theme and Five Beat pattern drive the scene forward in an unstoppable force. The choir appears chanting out Black Speech Verse of the Ring to signal the evil intentions that lie under the Uruks' quest, the finding the Ring and bringing it to Saruman who covets it for his own. Then comes the tragic death of Boromir which is perhaps the most emotional scene in the film. Now it is prolonged in EE and Shore paints the picture in music with noble choir that rises as the valiant Man seems to over come the Uruks but suddenly cruel stabs of percussion and tragic choir signal the fatal wounds he receives. Here Shore accentuates the drama with the music but does not resort to mickey mousing and connect the exact moment that Boromir is hit by the arrows with the percussion stabs but instead adds a powerful emotional level to the scene. The music helps to tell the story both on its own and with the visuals. And the Death of Boromir is utterly sad though Shore implies to the noblity Boromir achieved while trying to defend the Hobbits and thus reclaimed his honour after trying to take the Ring from Frodo. The boys choir returns to sing a lament as we see the Hobbits carried away by the Uruk-hai and Boromir cannot help them. Then there is a sudden burst of brass as Aragorn comes to the rescue of the noble man and defeats Lurtz is a quick and brutal combat that receives quotes of the Aragorn music. The final moments of Boromir are scored with noble and sad strings and boys choir singing sadly but as Aragorn vows to save Minas Tirith and Boromir dies in peace there is heard a restrained and noble version of the Fellowship theme which ends the sequence to a bitter sweet note. Absolutely stunning work. Well that description became quite long but as I said I really love that extended sequence and wanted to put to words my impressions of the music.
  14. Actually Western music and notation developed side by side. I find that very hard to believe since music is as old as man. Of course there was music first and then the notation. Man was making music before there were writing systems. What pixie twinkle probably meant was that the Western music (i.e. orchestral music) and notation developed side by side. And I seem to remember that some of the scales are even older, going back to the church music that goes partly back to Ancient music. But there has been notation in the Ancient times (Greek, as we are speaking of the Western music) though none of it has come down to us in written form.
  15. Well of course we are going to win. That is obvious. I'll be blasting Summon the Heroes form my lound speakers all night when that happens
  16. You talk like Yoda but I have to partly agree on what you said about the Call of the Champions. It did not feel as emotionally charged as I would have liked to. And I am still little baffled how a 350 person choir can sound so small. I was expecting HUGE choir sound and it was mixed down so it loses much of its power. Still the piece is very good wintery Olympic theme though not Williams' best. In my opinion Summon the Heroes is Williams' best Olympic theme. It is the first Williams Olympic theme I ever heard and none of the others is quite that good. He really achieves the feeling and spirit of Olympic festivities and the competition itself in his music. And the brass work in the Summon the Heroes is phenomenal as is Morrison's trumpet solo part. I have not listened to the Olympic music in a while so the Winter Olympics are a good excuse Smile I will go and listen to Williams' Olympic works right now!
  17. I found his comment rather pompous and silly really.
  18. I also have heard Vangelis can't read music but whether this is true I cannot say. He can't orchestrate that much is certain. He had to leave that job to other people in Alexander since he had not done any orchestration for symphony orchestra. And I have heard from my friend who is a big Vangelis fan that the man has no formal musical education and prefers to use his key boards and improvise to get the feeling of the scene rather than to write the music. That of course does not prove he can't read music but it tells about his preferences. This is from one Vangelis fan page: The musical talents of Vangelis first became obvious at the age of four. His parents tried to encourage him to study with a professional teacher, but he did not respond well to formal education as he was generally unwilling to follow instructions. Vangelis explains, "I have always felt that you should not borrow knowledge from others, because personal experience and development are of utmost significance."
  19. Wow perhaps I should take those violin lessons. I could finally read music It's about time I learned it.
  20. No I am past the fast period in LOTR music. Bring it on I am willing to hear it all!
