  1. Funniest thing i've seen in ages! They're called Huntsman Spiders, and the larger ones are found pretty much in Australia and New Zealand (probably the main reason I wouldn't want to live there!). They're not fatally poisonous, but their bites have some toxins in them that can cause reactions like inflammation of the skin and nausea and the like. Don't think i'd like to try getting bit by them at any rate.
  2. Just read this on FARK. Sad news indeed. Cancer is a scary thing.
  3. True - but most times in these cases, the instrument is used for like 2 seconds. They only get coverage because they are unique and I guess they need specialized players for them.
  4. I would also vote for this track - this sequence scared the bejesus out of me as a kid (i've actually been listening to 'Krull' quite a lot recently - great soundtrack). on the expanded release,at 2.26 of this track when the love theme kicks in...surely one of Horner's best moments. Agreed - too bad Horner didn't continue to compose in bombastic brass style, and instead has opted for string-y sentimentalist fare in recent years. Bring back the old Horner, I say!
  5. Ahh, any news is good news. But i'm a bit confused - is it being used in a "song" for the movie, or for the actual score itself? The article seems to be quite vague about that. I know what you mean, but I think they are referring to what we soundtrack fans like to call cues After re-reading the article, methinks you are right sir. Damn these people need to get up-to-date on their semantics!

  8. You know, it's all fun and games when discussing spiders....and then Clock Spider enters the equation. Fear for you lives (and don't do a search for the "reveal" picture - you won't sleep tonight).
  9. oo oo oo....my vote goes for You are the Pan. Obviously. And to really get your chops going, the Opening fanfare to The Cowboys. <_<
  10. Fantastic again Marc - I look forward to you popping out one of these every month till the end of time
  11. No, I haven't yet heard of Holsinger, but thank you for mentioning him, I'll certainly check him out. Here's a pretty decent performance of the piece I mention from a High School concert band from Hawaii: Part I Part II I got to play it under the composer for All-State band in '98 with a 150 piece wind ensemble - it was fantastic (we had like 23 trumpets!).
  12. Have you heard of David Holsinger? Great concert band composer from America. His piece To Tame the Perilous Skies is really fun to play. Thinking back to my High School days however, I think the toughest pieces I ever had to play were Schoenberg's Theme and Variations, Ingolf Dahl's Sinfonietta, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 arranged for concert band (played at break-neck speed!). Also, I get to play under Philip Sparke's baton in a couple of months.....can't wait for it! Of his pieces we're playing two, Celebration and Dance Movements which coincidentally are 2 of my absolute favorite concert band pieces ever.
  13. Plus I do believe that JW is an active supporter of the Democratic Party - so maybe he allowed it to be used.
  14. I'm pretty sure it's Sanskrit also - haven't the foggiest what they're saying though, but i'm sure my grandmother would. I think you're right but Williams could have also used Hindu. Isn't 'hindu' a religion? Yup (actually, a 'hindu' is anyone who follows the dharmmic religion of hinduism). 'Hindi' is the actual language spoken by Indians, and nowadays Sanskrit is used as a liturgical language for religious purposes, similar to Latin in some European countries. There's actually a revival to bring back Sanskrit which would be fine by me - India needs to start recovering it's true identity after years and years of having muslim culture and language shoved down their throats (Hindi has some persian and arabic words spread throughout which I personally think should be expunged).
  15. Oh man, hearing Rachmaninoff's '3rd Piano Concerto' live is one of the greatest moments in my life (now to only perform it one day ) I quite like the end to Gershwin's 'American in Paris' - it pretty much sums up the entire piece nicely. I also like the protracted ending to Shostakovich's 'Seventh Symphony'.
  16. He'll always be alive.....**points to chest**......in here.
  17. I actually like how Michael Kamen integrates classical music into the scores for Die Hard and Die Hard 2 (Beethoven's '9th Symphony' and Sibelius' 'Finlandia' respectively). Also of note, although not really "classical", is Kamen's use of 'Aquarela do Brasil' by Ary Barroso in the Gilliam film Brazil.
  18. Gah - I can't believe Juno won best screenplay. I've never heard such contrite and forced dialog in my life (apart from the prequels that is ): "Honest to blog?" "Oh my GOD. Oh garbage! Phuket, Thailand! " "It's probably just a food baby. Did you have a big lunch? " I mean seriously, did they award best screenplay awards to films in the '70s that had jive-talking in them?
  19. Relax mate, you didn't have to respond to the topic. I'm glad these issues are brought up routinely because frankly, my tastes might have changed since the last time! Plus it allows newer users to opine.

  21. Here's some of what I listen to when stressed: Venus - 'The planets Suite' - Holst 4th movement (fountains of medici) - 'Fountains of Rome' - Resipighi Danse Macabre - Saint-Saens The Lark Ascending - Vaughan-Williams Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun - Debussy The Prince and the Princess - 'Sheherazade' - Rimsky-Korsakov Pavanne for a dead Princess - Ravel and many many more. Suffice it to say that I get stressed out quite often, so i'm listening to this type of music quite frequently.
  22. Yeah - I also saw the "revenge video" from kimmel and affleck. I've seen Silverman in several things, but she always comes of as abrasive and trying just a *bit* too hard to get laughs. But hey, everyone's got to have a schtick right, so that's just her thing I guess. Besides I don't watch Kimmel, i'm a Conan guy - Kimmel seems to be too absorbed with himself (at least he used to be on the Man Show) - but then again since he is in the midst of Hollywood, being self-absorbed must be the normal thing. That's why I like Conan (and Jon Stewert) - they both have self-deprecating humour which I find really funny.
  23. Damon is a great actor - but for pete's sake, Sarah Silverman is so annoying. Seriously, who the hell thinks she is funny?
