  1. "Funeral Pyre for a Jedi"

The statements in "The Battle of Yavin", specifically when the X-Wings first dive into their attack run and then when Luke hears Obi-Wan's call to "use the force". Gets me every time.

The opening to "The Rebel Fleet". I think one of the only times the theme has been developed beyond what it normally is.

I remember several years ago there was a forum-wide poll to determine our collective favorite John Williams theme and the Force theme won it. I still stand by that.

  2. The Resistance theme is one of my favorite elements of the new score. And story wise I think it's really interesting that this time around the (ostensible) good guys have their own march. Traditionally in Star Wars the bad guys get the marches, be it the Trade Federation or the Empire. The good factions get the shorter motifs but here it is the other way around. It's a salient reflection of the the way the galactic powers are setup in the films.

  3. I expect more of Poe's theme because I expect he will be in the movie more than he was in VII. It seems to me that the score, like the film, is in many ways a setup for this new trilogy. So a character like Dameron has his own adventurous theme despite the character not actually having a lot of screentime. Same with Finn and to an extent Kylo Ren; I'd expect the motifs for those characters to get a lot more development in subsequent scores. I don't know if Williams was intentionally doing this, but Kylo's motif being as brief as it is recalls the fact that Vader didn't have a fully-fledged theme until the second installment of the OT. Could be that he was emulating himself there and is waiting to pull out a full overture for Kylo and/or The First Order in VIII.

It's a playground for terrific music. And also, I love how 5 second-long scenes become somewhat infinte. It's a infinite playground for the imagination. I love as much for what it suggest as for what it shows

Yeah, that's a fundamental part of it for me as well. The universe Lucas created is one of the most potent ever. You can tell literally any kind of story you want to tell. Fantasy, sci-fi, western, horror, comedy, tragedy, romance, war epic. And you see shades of all those genres in the films, blending together. It's like a distillation of so much mythology blown up on the grandest scale.

It's crazy to think that Snoke has a concert version of his theme but The Force still doesn't. From the OT to the prequels and now the sequels, surely you would think he would have written one by now. It would be a popular one at concerts.

I get the feeling he doesn't want to. Because, like you said, in nearly 40 years there hasn't been anything to stop him and as far as Star Wars themes go it's one of the most iconic. Maybe he prefers to just have the theme exist within the context of the scores.

  6. Who's excited?

    ME!

Though if I have to be honest, it doesn't quite look like I expected it to look (for example, I prefer Barret's design in Advent Children (which was closer to the original game's design) than in this video). Still, I was originally mainly interested in the remake for the music, but now, after having watched the video, I'm intrigued by the game itself.

It looks a lot like the upcoming Final Fantasy XV with the real-time combat and urban setting. Which is basically what I was expecting the remake to be. I would've preferred something that skewed more towards the original with some kind turn-based combat system but I understand that there might not be much of a point in doing a remake if they weren't going to change it up, especially with the original game being ported to PS4.

But my real problem is Barrett's sunglasses. It's a small thing but they just look dumb.

  7. The prequels set him up as a religious figure? What?

Well, there was the whole virgin birth thing. And the chosen one prophecy. But it's inaccurate to claim Vader was just some guy in the OT. He was very much the face of the Empire, an active commander who inspired fear in everyone around him. So it makes sense that thirty years on he would be held up as this paragon of the Empire and dark side, especially when his final turn away from it was unknown to almost everyone.

  8. All three leads had their own theme! And so did Obi-Wan, Yoda, Vader, Boba Fett, and The Emperor. I'm sure TFA will have lots of character themes.

I don't recall Han having a theme other than "Han Solo & the Princess" which was kind of larger than that single character. I also don't remember Obi-Wan and Boba Fett having their own themes but I'm probably just not informed enough.

  9. Batman Begins - Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard

Truly excellent score that plays great on album, as Zimmer productions often do. It's unfair how overshadowed this one is by the other two, as it's particularly elegant sonically and thematically. It's so, so stupid how callously ignored these are by so many film music fans. But that's another and oft-had conversation so I'll stop myself.

It's probably my favorite of the three, though I like them all. It's a true even-split collaboration between Zimmer and Howard that diminished as the series went on until it just became Zimmer. While I like Zimmer and think these are some of his best works Begins having the most of Howard's influence means I kind of gravitate toward it by default.

  10. The trailer gave me a better grasp on the characters, which was the main thing I wanted out of it. I don't care too much about plot specifics, especially for this movie. The trailer established more of a general feel for the state of the story rather than the story's beats and that's fine for me. When it comes to trailers I usually err on the side of ambiguity, not because it can be misleading but because I'd rather not have the story spoiled for me.

  11. Well I happen to like it. Some of it would lose a lot of magic translated into cutscenes or dialogue.

They could've still made it unobtrusive and optional within the game through diary/audio logs. The fact that you can't access any of that stuff within the game proper is a problem to me. I love the ambient, environmental storytelling that games are so adept at.

  12. You have a PS4, Red? Episode 1 should still be free. Give it a try. Not exactly sure what you guys are asking about. It's sarcastic bumbling wittiness between the main characters. Baker more or less reprises his Delsin character from Infamous: Second Son. From what I've played of the actual Borderlands games, there is nothing close to the level of plot and characters like there are here.

I downloaded it to PS4 today. I'll give it a shot. I'm a big fan of Telltale's if nothing else.
