Williams' Double-LP would have had sections edited out of cues like he always likes to do.  The cues on disc 1 here don't have sections taken out.  Also the tracks were in a slightly different order, partially to conform to four 20-minute LP sides.

So, its an approximation of the 2LP, not a note for note re-creation of it.

It would be would be interesting to hear it as JW initially intended it, with sections edited out, as that probably gives more flow to the music. Will you post a guide to make our own 2LP edits?

Erroneous opinion, haha! Don't put a friendly smiley at the end of your text as justification for basically saying "fuck you and your opinion"!

Let's not get too serious - I believe his remark was just meant as a joke. I certainly take no offense.

But the new set is NOT the program Williams would have released in the 70s, and was NOT newly compiled by Williams himself, but by Mike... even if Mike certainly put great care into it, and even if Williams approved the result. Right?

From what I've read on this forum it seems pretty close to JW's original intentions.

    Monsignor, I'm working on it.

Heartbeeps, as the "official" discographist of John Williams (on this forum at least), I will say "I work on it too".  :sarcasm:

I was surprised to find Heartbeeps on Spotify:

Ha, ha....yeah, I hardly ever click on 'expanded release' threads anymore unless they're about general thoughts on the issue.

The original soundtrack release of CE3K was the most disappointing presentation by JW I've ever heard, and because of that I've never even considered buying it. However, I know the material is great, and the 1998 release was quite good. In the new release I love the idea of a looong "suite" prepared by JW himself, without odd edits, and that's why I'll order it.

No no, true alternates (IE, they came back another day with different sheet music and recorded a newly written version of a cue) exist and are on this set; He's just saying every take of every cue wasn't kept, just the edited version of each cue that might have several takes combined together to get the best performance.

Thanks for clarifying. I guess this implies that potentially bad edits could be difficult to improve.

I think the inclusion of "When You Wish Upon a Star" is inspired and wonderful.  But just tracking in a performance from Pinocchio is a bad idea, glad they abandoned that.  Williams arrangement/incorporation into the end credits is just classic people!

    It's indeed masterfully done.

I've often wondered whether JW/Spielberg had to pay royalties to the right holders of When you wish upon a star because of JW's quotation of the theme, or is the quote so small and concealed that they didn't have to?

    I like good disco.

ABBA has got some great disco songs! Much better than the disco versions of JW's great soundtracks. ;)

Nor are there any alternate takes because Ken Wannberg used the original first generation multi-track tapes to edit the performances together.

What does MM mean by this? Are the alternates lost due to Ken Wannberg?

Williams didn't want the disco track on this release. Simple as. At least that is what MV posted on FSM forum.

EDIT. Some more comments from Mike Matessino from FSM board:

I support the exclusion of the disco version. Stylistically it doesn't fit with the score, and it's just an embarrassment for JW.

Interesting explanation from MM of why the original end titles cue was discarded.

I really like some of Morricone's famous efforts, like The Untouchables, The Mission, the dollars trilogy and Once Upon a Time in the West. A while ago I wanted to go more in depth in his film music so I checked out many of his soundtracks on Spotify, both obscure ones and more familiar ones. Unfortunately, I found many of them unsatisfying from a purely musical standpoint. They may still work well in the movies though.
