I love this theme. It’s stands in contrast with all the earlier macguffin themes as somber and reflective (except maybe the grail theme? But that seemed more noble than this one). I’m sure I’m projecting, but it suggests to me Williams reflecting on his own protracted career, how he’s surely in the closing chapters of his life. It sticks out to me that Williams swerved from his usual closing the credits on the Raiders March to instead go out on this theme for what is likely to be his final film score.

I think most of the violin arrangements are incredible, but here it smothers the gorgeous orchestral writing. It’s actively distracting when I am trying to enjoy the stronger iterations of the melody. It doesn’t help that Williams seemingly removed the climax of the piece from the superior orchestral arrangement.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny clips with Williams score
Taikomochi replied to Jay's topic in JOHN WILLIAMS
I know the moment you are talking about, but it seems like we already have multiple examples of this happening just in the 5 minutes or so of clips released from Dial. That’s… troubling. Will wait to hear the whole thing before passing judgment, of course. -
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny clips with Williams score

To me, it does not sound like he wrote something that incidentally sounded like it. It sounds like he started with the sheet music for Spyders, changed some notes, and called it a cue. -

As I said in the other thread, that is 100% temped with “Spyders” edit: my post in that thread was pulled into this one -

I take that as code for “I don’t really know what Williams sounds like outside of his 70’s-80’s hits, least of all how his sound has changed over time, so it was disorienting and different to me.” -
Simon Franglen's AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER (2022)

Just dropping into this thread to say I hate Avatar, I don’t even know what Avatar is, and I have no interest in it whatsoever, but I will spend money on it. Thanks. -

My hot take is the complete Jungle Chase is the best extended setpiece Williams wrote for any of these. Incredible, incredible action scoring, thrilling in its complexity. -

Oh sure, I figured you weren’t endorsing it. I always just chuckle at how easy it is to identify those vids by the thumbnail -

On principle, I never watch YouTube videos where the thumbnail has the youtuber making some stupid ass face like that. That’s how you identify people who just make contrarian opinions for clicks, and they shouldn’t be rewarded. It hasn’t steered me wrong thus far. -

First Clip from Indy 5 with new John Williams action music

Don’t worry. If that comes to be, then a contingent of users band together and pop up in every single thread that the issue of reuse comes up in to reassure you that actually this score is 100% Williams, deliberately obfuscating the fact that no one thinks William Ross wrote music for the film as much as Williams reused too much. Just the way they seem to do every time the Chamber of Secrets reuse problems get discussed. And so we can all just go on living in denial that way. 👍 -
