  1. LOL Don't people say the say thing about Williams's music? Anthony
  2. I took a Shakespeare course last semester, and at one point we started talking on the topic of King. My instructor said that she believes some (not all, but some) of King's works will be looked on in the future in much the same way as we look on Shakespeare's works: timeless and classic works of art. By the way, Joe, that was a very well-spoken response. I couldn't have said it better myself. Anthony - who would really love to one day see a King film with a Williams score.
  3. I was going through some of my older CDs the other day and came across the following written by King in the liner notes for the soundtrack to Stephen King's The Stand (composed by W.G. Snuffy Walden). "Epic music is sometimes okay -- that big old sixteen thousand-track John Williams thang -- but sometimes it's not okay, even when the show the music is meant for is, like The Stand, epic in scope." So, what do you all think. Is there a true dislike for Williams's music here, or is King merely making the same general assumption that so many others do: that John only writes big brassy stuff like Star Wars, Superman and Indiana Jones. BTW, King does recover himself a little while later to a degree when he says: "The feel of a story is another thing, though, and while many different departments work together to create that feel, the style and emotional coloring of the music is the most important." Anthony - looking forward to hearing the collective opinion of the Board.
  4. For the longest time, I stayed away from the Harry Potter series precisely because of it's immense popularity. I looked on it as another ridiculous childhood fad (like Pokemon or Furby's). When I heard that Chris Columbus was making a film, and John Williams was composing the score, I began to consider that it might be something worthwhile. Finally, in a fit of boredom on Thanksgiving 2000, I picked up my younger cousin's paperback copy of COS and read about two-thirds of it in a couple of hours. I was hooked. I asked for and received all four hardback books for Christmas and had them read within two weeks. I've read each book at least three times; I'm eagerly awaiting OOTP; I watched both films opening day; I purchased both soundtracks the day of their release. Who's to say I would have had the same the reaction if it hadn't been for Williams's involvement. But I know now that my attitude was keeping something genuinely good and worthwhile away from me. Ren's right when she says we should make educated judgments. I hope I've learned my lesson. Anthony
  5. I dont' find any of Williams's music to be "unlistenable", but the CD's that get the least playtime in my player are probably Seven Years in Tibet and Nixon. One of my favorite non-Williams works is Pino Donaggio's score to Carrie. However, that CD contains the one track in my 200+ CD collection that I cannot abide listening to. The liner notes describe the track as "sustained low string chords and a sizzling, buzzing grouping of synthesized sounds". To me it just sounds like static electricity and completely out of synch with the rest of score, which I think is amazing. Anthony

  11. In high school, we played a piece called John Williams in Concert, which consited of The Flying Theme from ET, The Mission Theme (NBC News), the Imperial March, the Star Wars Main Theme, the Cantina Band, Olympic Spirit, and the Jaws theme. Also, I had the pleasure of performing The Cowboys Overture in county Honor Band. It was this piece that really started my "obsession" with Williams, and it's the reason "The Cowboys" is still in my JW top ten. We also rehearsed but never performed a piece called Star Wars Medley, which mostly consisted of the Main Title and End Credits, with a brief statement of the Force Theme to bridge the two. Many - weirded out because his ten year high school reunion is this summer.

  13. I agree here. The anthology strikes the perfect balance between those lengthy tracks in the SE's and the absurdity of 21 second snippits in TPM: UE. I mean, what was that all about? Many
  14. Here are three of my favorites: Ralph Wiggum (on eating island berries): They taste like . . . burning! Lisa Simpsons (on eating Apu's cooking): I can see through time. Lisa: Where are the dice? Todd: Daddy says dice are wicked. Rod: We just move one space at a time. It's less fun that way. Many
