  1. Sure, and I'm glad at least the score will be in stereo on the DVD. Marian - who picked up Disney's Robin Hood on DVD today, which has the score in mono even though the film was remixed in DD5.1. (Dammit, I want that score on CD!)
  2. Why don't you check out Prokofiev? Alexander Nevsky, Lt. Kije and Ivan the Terrible are film scores (and damn good ones). And while Romeo & Juliet is a ballet, it works like a film score. Technically hardly any difference between that and Star Wars. Me too. What...all 3 of them? Hmm...Sneakers, Aliens, Casper, Brainstorm, a couple of others... no, more than three. Regarding Aliens, I hated the use of Gayaneh in the movie. But on the album, where the score isn't as butchered as in the film, Horner actually incorporates the theme into the score, and varies it, instead of simply copying it. For me, it works quite well that way. I'm far more concerned by the Khan and Star Wars bits, which I find VERY annoying. Still, great score, and Don Davis apparently likes it, too. Marian - who picked up an album with excerpts from Khachaturian's Spartacus and Gayaneh yesterday.
  3. I would love for you to explain to me what the heck that means. Back at that time, Horner mainly wrote melodies, and added a few instruments playing background music. One of the main reasons why I like orchestral music are the possibilities of orchestrations, and the fact that I can listen to good orchestral music over and over again and hear something new everytime. But in Khan, there's nothing new there to discover - it's too thin. Aliens already has far better orchestrations. Marian - who doesn't understand why Rosenman is so underrated.
  4. Do Dutch Mediamarkts have good score selections? Their prices in Austria are good, too, but it doesn't help a lot if they don't have what I'm looking for... Marian - who won't get MR before June 25.
  5. I don't know if I'd call it inspiration. For some reason, I never notice Horner's Prokofiev rips until someone points them out to me. I guess he just does it too often, and I knew Horner first. Ah yes...capitalism. LOL Marian - fan of good Horner scores.
  6. I first went online in 1997, and the FSM board was one of the first sites I visited. Since then, I've been at FSM, MM.com and lately JWFan.net, and I've read LOTS of stuff about Titanic. And a good deal of it was very negative. Probably more than 50%, in fact. I have #2, but don't play it very often anymore, orchestrations are too thin. I have #3 as MP3s somewhere, but never played them. I love the main title (have it on a compilation), and how Horner used the TOS theme in the finale, but the CD is way too expensive. Marian - who'd still pick up an expanded Khan.
  7. Most certainly not. They were going to do an iso score for one of the DVD releases, but Ford A. Thaxton took care of that and convinced them that it's "stupid" and "bad marketing". Marian - who is "miss the point".
  8. Have you heard the London performance? If not, you can't understand - the original recording is lame in comparison. But I also thought, how could people possibiyl prefer Goldsmith's theme. Until that concert. Just a bit more clarification: I don't think The Fury is the best score on CD. But it's one of the very best when heard in the film. Marian - who nearly picked up The Fury on DVD today, but was confused by the audio format (DD 4.0?)
  9. It's good, but the Schumann rip is IMHO the most annoying thing Horner has ever done (I once saw about 10 minutes of the movie, but couldn't concentrate on the action - my mind was busy for 30 minutes until I had figured out where I had heard that theme). There's one bit in Willow that appears at least twice on the CD (don't ask me where exactly, can't remember) that sound very much like it could have been written by Richard Strauss. Perhaps it's original Horner, but I just don't trust him...I'd really like to know if he did it or where he got it from. If you like Escape from the Tavern, get Schumann's Symphony #3 - you'll enjoy that, too. Marian - who likes all of Schumann's symphonies.
  10. Remember that Spielgberg wasn't able to finish the film back in '77. That's why he made the expanded version. The studio only agreed to let him do that if he showed the UFO from the inside, so he did that - and regretted it. And that's why we have the Collector's Edition. Marian - who thinks they should have used seamless branching to put all three versions on the DVD.
  11. Sound improved? Improved over the old Special Edition release? Could this possibly mean that the full ROTJ score has been released with the same sound quality as on the Anthology set? Marian - who'd love to believe this, but can't.
  12. That's what I've been doing occasionally. Because I've never heard the score. I like several Horner scores, some of them a lot. But I don't trust him enough to blindly buy his CDs - particularly not if they're as controversial as this one. Marian - whose favourite Horner score is STILL Sneakers. Tahiti is not in Europe!
  13. Oh yes, the NxNW iso score sounds great. Yup. No, not quite. Not the single best score. But second to none. Superman has lots of awesome stuff. Like the Krypton fanfare, or Fortress of Solitude. The main title and love theme/flying music are very good too. And there's some great Cowboys-like Americana stuff on the first CD of the Rhino set. Oh, and March of the Villains is very funny. But as a whole, I still find the score too much of the same. I hardly ever play the whole 2 CDs. As a whole score, I find The Fury far superior. Marian - who for a long time couldn't understand how some people like Goldsmith's Supergirl theme better than the Superman March, but after hearing the Goldsmith thing in London (far more energetic than on the album) agrees.
  14. Hmm, I give the DVD version an 8. It's really very good, but I don't feel like giving it a ten. 8O According to TheDigitalBits, the 2 DVD version will remain available even after the 1 disc version is released. Marian - who found the documentary on the DVD excellent. Eric Clapton Unplugged
  15. But it still has poor sound. Marian - who thinks this score has some of Williams all-time best cues (like Fortress of Solitude), but as a whole is quite overrated. 8O Eric Clapton Unplugged
  16. Fact of the day: There are no songs in Star Wars. (Except for Lapti Nek - and that newer thing that replaced it - and Ewok Celebration, and Augie's Municipial thingy).
  17. As far as I know, those are regular CDs. It's just that the audio is encoded in DTS, so you won't hear anything too pleasant without a DTS decoder. Marian - who doesn't have any version of that score.
  18. Conan the Barbarian is one of *the* scores. I didn't know the Varese is newer than the Milan, and I always thought since we had the Milan here, Varese just never released their disc in continental Europe. I've only ever seen the Milan in stores, and Milan discs are usually known to be out of print before they're even out. I also have a CDR of the Varese, some nice additional music. So what about that re-recording Poledouris has apparently been intending to make for years? Sound on the original recording is better than that of many other scores from the same year, but it still could be a lot better. And I hear Poledouris wasn't happy with the performance. Thanks. I do like it, and I've had it for years - that above was Mari, not Marian. 8O Marian - who'd like to see Poledouris record a HDCD of the full score with the LSO...
  19. Compared to the first two SEs, ROTJ is far less shrill, but it sounds so muffled when you compare it to the Anthology disc. And the wonderfully natural reverb from that CD is totally missing, too. Marian - who bought the Anthology set because he had read about the better sound quality.
  20. Hector complained about the shrinking effects, and I assumed he thought they were CGI (because this thread is basically about CGI pros and cons), so I just pointed out that at least most of them weren't CGI. Marian - who feels misunderstood.
  21. As far as I know, it'll be the TV cut that has a few additional scenes. Marian - who has read about those scenes but hasn't seen them.
  22. Of course it is. I thought you were referring to CGI. He looks like Frodo! Marian - who thinks he was very well casted.
  23. Anyway, assuming that either Prowse or Christensen play the part, and Jones provides the voice, the number of actors to have played/voiced the character remains five. Marian - who despises dubs.
  24. Ehm...what effects? Chances are that they were not CGI. Marian - who has no problem at all with Wood.
  25. In *some* ways? FOTR has to tbe the best-looking movie I've seen that relies so heavily on CGI effects. Gollum and the Cave Troll are obviously CGI (though extremely well-done - except for the bit when Legolas jumps on the troll's back, that looks like crap). The Balrog has to be, though it's barely noticeable. But aside from that, I honestly couldn't tell what's real and what's CGI. From what I've read, the foremost fighters in the battle scenes are real persons and the background is CGI - I couldn't tell the difference, neither on the big screen nor on the SVCDs. Quick note on Potter: The fx are poor (except for the chess board), but at least they didn't do gratituous CGI stuff - all effects served a purpose. Marian - who thinks it should be noted that FOTR also mixes CGI with conventional techniques, e.g. extremely advanced forced perspective techniques to shrink the Hobbits. Superman
