  1. In the early years of film scoring, lots of instruments were doubled. The liner notes of the Morgan/Stromberg Marco Polo recordings give some info on that. Vocals seem to be recorded separately very often. Take the "orchestral only" Merry Christmas on the expanded HA2, it seems like they just didn't mix in the choral tracks for that one. Mike Oldfield's original Tublar Bells was performed entirely by himself, instrument by instrument. Marian - Jurassic Park III (Don Davis)
  2. There's a difference... Egyptian was scored by TWO great composers. Marian - Jurassic Park III (Don Davis)
  3. ROTJ SE sounds very filtered and airless. The other SEs sound rather harsh. Listen to the remastered CE3K and tell me you wouldn't like to hear Star Wars CDs that sound at least remotely like that. Marian - persistantly annoyed. Jurassic Park III (Don Davis)
  4. It's one of the best scores of all time. As such, it can only be considered overlooked. Marian -
  5. Yes, I've been playing that too over the last few days. Great themes, nice orchestrations, and huge fun - I still can't believe this came from two MV factory workers. Marian - who just dug out Doyle's Donnie Brasco again.
  6. Yes, I'm sure Mr. Huxley was glad to have it back. Marian - LOL
  7. I'm sorry, I'd have used simply "horn" as in German, but then some people would have assumed I'm talking about brass instruments in general. Of course, I mostly get to hear Viennese Horns around here. Marian - not to forget the Wagner tuba.
  8. Lacking in originality? Well, the finale of the Choral Fantasy sounds like an alternate take on the idea of his 9th Symphony chorale... Anyway, certainly one of the great composers. I adore the 7th symphony. Several others are excellent, not to forget Fidelio. Marian - hoping to see Fidelio live again this season. Symphony #8 "The Great" (Franz Schubert)
  9. The Quidditch Fugato from POA is among the best things Williams has done this century. Marian - Chicken Run (Powell/Gregson-Williams)
  10. French horn and timpani (I'm a Bruckner fan after all) and yes, the Blaster Beam. Marian -
  11. Does Ren get an email every time somebody posts in this thread? Marian -
  12. You could have said Schumann. Or Grieg. Or wizards. Or something. Marian - who hasn't seen Willow. Heartwood
  13. Then it would fit Luke's descriptions. Marian - who thinks Stefan has not.
  14. Then it would make sense. But nominating a composer for one score and nominating a score by one composer is...exactly the same thing. Marian - applying database mapping techniques to film score award nominations. Brassed Off (Trevor Jones & Various)
  15. I haven't heard the Powell or Amenàbar, but I'm generally not a Powell friend, and judging from the only Amenàbar I know (The Others), he's fine, but it seems none of the scores listed are a match for WOTW. Marian - who doesn't quite get the point of having best composer with their score and best scores with their composer, nor understand why the two lists differ.
  16. Exactly the two points I've been emphasising for years. Marian -
  17. All the Varese Herrmann re-recs I've heard have excellent performances and great sound. Vertigo won some award (was it the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis?), so I expect no less from it. Marian - who also wants Fahrenheit. The Adventures of Robin Hood (Korngold; Morgan/Stromberg)
  18. Yes. And still, the 10 minutes I watched (I can't remember which of the live action Asterix movies it was) were so bad I had to turn it off. Marian - who'd rather have a complete edition of the cartoon books.
  19. How could I've forgotten Postlethwaite? Probably because he isn't doing enough movies. Marian - who also likes the score and hasn't seen any of Cohen's other films.
  20. Yes. Not a great one, but still enjoyable, with some good acting (Thewlis is wonderful). Marian - who hasn't watched it in years. Cutthroat Island (John Debney)
  21. Get all the Gerhardt compilations. Also get the Morgan/Stromberg Adventures of Robin Hood and if you want also the Kojian recording (not complete unlike the M/S, but still very good). Get the Captain Blood OST on Tsunami (bad sound but perfectly listenable) plus the Marco Polo compilation with the Captain Blood suite (which is fantastic plus you get Young's awesome Scarmouche as a bonus). Don't forget Kojian's Sea Hawk recording. Tsunami also released the OSTs of Robin Hood and Sea Hawk if you want those. When you're done with that and the complete Sea Hawk isn't out yet, ask for further directions. Marian - who is getting Waxman's Prince Valiant and wants Sunset Blvd.. Cutthroat Island (John Debney)
