The rate of the drop is disconcerting, though.

Film-goers and Star Wars fans (numbering in the hundreds of millions worldwide) choosing not to see the film in theaters are individuals making their own decisions after strongly disliking TLJ. Some also learned that Lucasfilm employees unapologetically called critics (of their latest SW films) sexist, racist, and manbabies. It's only logical that those insulted and disappointed would skip the next installment while the Lucasfilm leadership remains unchanged. The mostly mediocre reviews don't help, with some reporting that Solo doesn't do the title character justice. I can say with confidence that "wasn't marketed well and nobody asked for the idea" are not significant reasons for its failure.

I have not read the Bloodline novel, but I was aware of its contents regarding the harmful effects of de-militarization.

TLJ attempted to blur the line in regards to arms producers/dealers selling to the First Order - and the Resistance - as not necessarily 'good' or 'bad'.

Preachy Rose Tico stopped the movie in its tracks when she blamed the gambling/partying/wealthy/oblivious/apathetic occupants and visitors of Canto Bight for the use (and apparent abuse) of people and animals for their own selfish benefit. She eventually took it upon herself to break-out some large racing animals, riding one herself whilst trampling the city, with the police in chase, and Finn hanging on for dear life, who complained at her for "enjoying" the experience. When the herd was 'free', she took the opportunity to remove the animal's saddle, saying only then what they did was "worth it."

Most movie-goers would agree that this blatant example of Social Justice Warring does not belong in a Star Wars film. Did Kathleen Kennedy, Rian Johnson, and Co. really think that this (and TLJ's shoe-horned-in identity politics and male-bashing) would be accepted by the fans? How delusional they were... and probably still are. Maybe they don't care, and are just trying to influence the world in the little time they have before they are fired.

I find it incredibly ironic that you say "youtubers who are whining about how leftist Star Wars has become under Disney don't know what they're talking about" and that "their annoying cries" and "entire platform doesn't matter" as a Disney-produced Star Wars film is failing at the box office and will struggle to turn a profit. You call anti-SJW people "deranged", but you might want to re-assess those in charge of Disney/Lucasfilm... and yourself, while you're at it.

True. It may be the biggest failure of the Canto Bight sequence.

They better go somewhere with this in Episode 9 instead of leaving it hanging as some isolated statement like "duhhh war profiteering iz bad mkay?"

It’s a trite message that doesn’t work in a fictional universe where the war is painted as a cosmic struggle between good and evil. “The only fight. Against the dark side. Through the ages, I've seen evil take many forms. The Sith. The Empire. Today, it is the First Order. Their shadow is spreading across the galaxy. We must face them. Fight them. All of us.”

It's quite possible that in Episode 9, Rey will instruct Force ghost Yoda on how to better understand the Force. And in the film's climax, Rey will instruct the Force itself on how to better exist.

So the “arc” tends upwards and upwards, as she learns and discovers and grows all by herself, and never makes mistakes or lets anyone down or has to sacrifice or is asked to follow anything other than her own will.

Was someone else complaining about politics in these new SW films? Fans seem to be "perpetually-outraged" because these films are disappointing - or flat out terrible. At best, Solo is a mediocre, uninspired, action film... and a financial failure.

While most believe that 'animal cruelty is bad', so blatantly (and needlessly) inserting it into a SW film (in the form of horse racing) then literally stampeding the elite-class of the gambling city is "politically motivated". Political elements in the OT were handled subtlety.

The fans a "vocal minority"? We may be vocal, but rest assured, our financial support of Lucasfilm's SW films/products is not a minority in term of dollars.

It keeps Rey from having a satisfactory arc, though. She’s been up on a pedestal for two movies, going from greatness to greatness while the men around her mope and fret.

To the Star Wars community, what Kathleen Kennedy (and co.) is doing to Star Wars has been taken as an offence. A substantial percentage of the fan-base (world-wide) is extremely disappointed.

I think people are used to rolling their eyes at general Hollywood preachiness; where it really stings is how they made Luke Skywalker unheroic, and then killed him off. How did they not get that Luke Skywalker was a childhood hero for a whole generation? For me probably the single greatest fictional hero of my childhood. It was a very strange decision.

After the relative financial success of TFA, my theory is that Disney gave Kennedy and company the freedom to do practically anything. They decided to pander to the Bernie Sanders crowd, who have been told - or honestly believe - that capitalism and the stock market are evil.

The vast majority of people don't care (or even know about) about Solo's (and the recent SW films') backstage problems.

Even though not many were crying out for a Solo film, it should have been made well considering Disney's deep pockets. Unfortunately, Kennedy and her gang dropped the ball in production... and chose to insult and accuse fans for calling them out for their shoe-horned-in identity politics in the recent SW films. TLJ was indeed divisive, and it's failings are a top reason that Solo is bombing at the box office.

Sorry, but the Star Wars overkill/fatigue excuse is nonsense. Most people would love to see a new Star Wars... every month... but only if it's well made, respectful to the characters/lore. Also, is it too much to ask that the film-makers don't accuse and insult audience members who have issues with the films?

Bigger cast names would be a draw, but the above criteria is mandatory.

I’m a little surprised Rian Johnson is still on for a whole trilogy after how divisive TLJ turned out to be. It’s basically guaranteed to appeal to only half the potential audience. Oh well, maybe they gamble that that’s still good numbers, and those who love TLJ *really* love TLJ, so, maybe that translates into toy sales, or something.

Of course, they’ve already changed directors for three movies—Rogue One, Solo, and Episode IX—so, who knows what will happen.

You seem to care about Star Wars movies enough to argue (on an internet forum) with a person of the opposing view. The implications of Star Wars on modern culture may be more important than you realize.

Animal cruelty is bad. Do most people consider horse racing bad? Regardless, those kind of modern statements do not belong so blatantly in a Star Wars film. Much of the TLJ's script/story is embarrassing.

Disney should promptly fire Kathleen Kennedy. I, and many others, would pay to go see Solo as a "thank you".
