Popular Post Holko 9,529
While not among the most highly demanded expansions, Sabrina has provided a good opportunity for those of us previously unfamiliar with the score to get to know it, and definitely revealed a lot of hidden secrets even for those familiar with the movie and the OST - a not insignificant amount of the cues were fully or partially unused or tracked over, and the OST is of course the OST. In general I could say the film tones down some more lush/loud renditions, and replaces some interesting variations with more standard tracking - so the set and this restoration are certainly a more diverse experience! The score has many shorter cues which might not be too satisfying in sequence, so Mike did a great job combining and even order shifting some of these for a better listen - a huge thanks to @Jay for all the help in reverse engineering that for this project. So, let's run through the themes: Main theme (intro, main melody, bridge) - As Mike says, an elegant but slightly unpredictable meandering melody that nevertheless finishes on a satisfying conclusion. In the Moonlight - While syncing up, I felt this one was mostly used for Sabrina's new relationships growing and changing... How Can I Remember - And this one for her trying (and sometimes failing) to move past them, her affection for David most specifically. Larrabee March - A fun, in a way almost goofy melody for woodwinds and/or strings with harpsichord accents, associated with the Larrabee family and their business proceedings. Paris - A small motif associated with the city and Sabrina's state of mind connected to it in a handful of cues. Main Title - An introductory statement of the main theme on woodwinds and piano. For the first half, the film tracks a rendition for mostly piano, which starts a bit later, right when Ford's credit has faded out. To Paris - The first cue proper plays after the party sequence, the main theme (with accordion for a French flavour) scoring Sabrina's first step in her growth arc. Learning The Ropes cue 1 - A contemporary pop beat is eventually supported by In the Moonlight on strings for Sabrina's first day on the job. I used the orchestral segment to fake a clean ending. Learning The Ropes cue 2 - The beat continues, with In the Moonlight entering again on brass for her being comforted, but the beat ends for the first How Can I Remember statement for her still pining after David. I phased the ending of the first cue's orchestral segment out of the film version with the beat to get a somewhat cleanish opening. The film actually drops the beat right before In the Moonlight would enter, so in the end only keeping it for the more comedic parts of the scene. Thinking Of Home - First introduction of the Larrabee Brothers' theme, first the main melody slowly on clarinet, then the march beat. The film tracks over the latter. Work Montage cue 1 - The Larrabee theme with piano taking the melody, clarinet and bassoon joining the beat. Work Montage cue 2 - Another rendition with the woodwinds playing the melody, brass joining the beat. These cues are a strange situation, here in the main program I opted to reproduce the film assembly, and details will be given in the alternates section. Photographing Paris cue 1 - This is the film sync, even if I'm not 100% sure it's correct. Photographing Paris cue 2 - Unused in the film, this is my best guess for its exact sync - we do know it's for this scene. Work Montage cue 3 - More Larrabee March, with wild timpani for the office building and a unique interlude - the latter, as well as the rest of the cue after, was tracked over with other Larrabee March cues in the film. Growing Up In Paris - An exploration of How Can I Remember scores Sabrina growing closer with Louis and Paris scores her becoming her own woman (climaxing with In the Moonlight) - with the now engaged David's shadow still looming in her mind. La Vie En Rose - A solo accordion rendition of the song that can be assumed to be source music, but the orchestra eventually joins in as the camera switches from a zoom to a pan and transitions away. Sabrina Is Home cue 1 - A grand rendition of the main theme for the new Sabrina's reveal. The film replaces it with a much softer piano version. The Drive - More gentle main themes for Sabrina happily starting to achieve her dream, becoming one of the many girls David picked up. Sabrina Is Home cue 2 - A lowkey comedic, melodyless Larrabee March transitions seamlessly into In the Moonlight. Linus And Mother cue 1 - A lively warm Larrabee theme. Linus And Mother cue 2 - More of that on various woodwinds. The film dials out most of the base setting of the theme for the titular cue, and all of the comedic variations for David after he wakes up. Off To The Vineyard - In the Moonlight scores the helicopter trip to the plane, the main theme scores the interior of the plane. The film dials out the gentle and briefly comedic intro. On The Porch cue 1 - A rich main theme statement, replaced in the film entirely by Sabrina is Home cue 2 (Larrabee March + In the Moonlight) On The Porch cue 2 - In the Moonlight suggestions for Linus secretly also starting to find himself, then some Larrabee for the cycling. The cue starts earlier in the film and the middle portion (Linus taking the call up until the transition) is replaced in the film with a Larrabee March. Beach Walk - Romantic main theme with a short In the Moonlight coda. Linus And Father - More romantic main theme and "Linus's" In the Moonlight variant. The film dials a good portion of the Linus/Sabrina conversation out. Sabrina To The Office - A nice main theme variation and another In the Moonlight. Dinner Montage cue 1 - Unused cue, we're not sure it was supposed to score this scene and not a deleted one, but IMO it works well enough. Reprises of the Paris motif mix with the main theme, ending once again on In the Moonlight. Dinner Montage cue 2 - In the Moonlight on guitar. The Princess Grows cue 2 - A clean main theme. The film places it a little later but I think it lines up better like this. Have Your Tea - The main theme intro and some Larrabee. Eavesdropping cue 1 - The film loops its ending one more time. Eavesdropping cue 2 - How Can I Remember returns as it seems Sabrina has given David up and visits Linus. The Princess Grows cue 1 - Completely unused in the film but I'm pretty sure about its placement. Full statements of the main theme and In the Moonlight for the scene where Linus and Sabrina have seemingly finally fully committed to trying a relationship. Sabrina’s Return To Paris - More How Can I Remember after Linus has "confessed" to it all having been a lie (or has it?) and Sabrina says her farewells to both brothers. The film dials out the very end. Wrapping It Up - Larrabee plays for David starting to explain the situation, and In the Moonlight for Sabrina leaving home again. Linus’ New Life - Energetic renditions of In the Moonlight and the main theme. End Credits - A complete concert-like exploration of the main theme. The movie extends the opening with a solo piano rendition of the main theme, then replaces most of it with an edit of Sting's In the Moonlight. To Paris (Alternate) - A very similar approach, only with the bridge instead of the main melody on accordion. Work Montage 1 - Intended film take Work Montage 1 - Alternate take Work Montage 1 - Alternate 1 Work Montage 1 - Alternate 2 Work Montage 2 - Film version Work Montage 2 - Alternate So what's going on here? The first two are two takes of the same piece, Larrabee march, woodwinds on the beat, piano on the melody, harpsichord twinkles. The third and fourth have the melody on clarinet and Alternate 1's also in a higher key. The fifth and sixth, Work Montage 2, have the beat on brass and the melody on woodwinds. 2 Alternate seems to be just a different take of the same material as the film version that Mike took the convenient opportunity to include. The film uses 1 Film Version (first half), 1 Alternate Take and 2 Film Version, and combines them into one seamlessly flowing piece, losing the sync with the opening cut in the process. Photographing Paris (Alternate) - While the film version is unique material, this is totally different, a combination of How Can I Remember and the Paris motif. Work Montage 3 (Alternate) - The only real difference is the missing grand timpani from the opening. Growing Up in Paris (Alternate) - Besides slight instrumentational differences, the big one is the Eiffel Tower scene - the film version goes grand into In the Moonlight, this one keeps it down soft and suggests the main theme intro on piano at the end. La Vie En Rose (Alternate) - A different arrangement with other instruments present all throughout, including an intro, having much less of a source music feel overall. Sabrina is Home cue 1 (Alternate) - A much more elegant, less dramatically grand main theme rendition - still grander and richer than the film tracking. Sabrina is Home cue 2 (Alternate) - Beside some subtle flourishes, the main difference with the film version is the lack of a longer held note ending. On the Porch cue 1 (Alternate) - A more restrained version. On the Porch cue 2 (Alternate) - For Linus' phone call, this version has In the Moonlight fully formed instead of the last note going up. Have Your Tea (Alternate) - Slight timing differences. Linus' New Life - Compositional differences, a slower tempo, some different sync accents - most notably in the film version In the Moonlight starts playing already when Linus starts running, while here it only starts when we pan to the helicopter. Jay 37,370
Awesome, @Holko! I had time to watch up through Off To the Vineyard over the weekend, and I can't wait to keep going and watch the whole thing It does seem like, at least through the parts I've seen, that the Moonlight theme is used for her with Linus, and How Can I Remember for anyone she won't end up with (Louis, David), and then the main theme for her own personal growth independent of them. Very cool! Holko
