  1. This thread was created on Feb 9, 2016 which was the day of or immediately after the Hollywood Bowl Summer schedule was released, and the same time the HB schedule was released the year prior. So I'm waiting till Feb 10, 2017 to confirm my travel plans for late August/early Sept next year. Tanglewood would be cool to go to but not even remotely easy for me to get to. 2-3 flights plus multiple hours of driving at exorbitant prices!
  2. Parts of that sounded flat to my ears but overall the arrangement was a bit flourished without being gawdy as MANY US Anthem performers do ot try and make their performance some special event rather than just paying respect to the nation they are performing (or rushing through the one they have to perform because they just don't care).
  3. During the concert Williams mentioned he's been playing every at the Bowl ever summer since I've been alive, but for 2 years. I know 2015 was just E.T. Live to screen due to health and schedule issues. Does anyone know what was the other year and possibly why?
  4. Maybe it's you Norwegian's who need to take on some more national pride perhaps? Playing anthems before major events is not sickening nor worthy of "dear god" type of over reactions. And at that it was a fine performance of the Star Spangled Banner and not a horrid performance by a rock band or reality TV show popularity contest loser that does plague many American anthem performances. It wasn't my national anthem but I enjoyed it's performance none the less. Remember, the "major" sport all you Euro's glamour for is glorified running with spurts of field diving. And the occasional celebratory biting of another man's junk. Are there broadcasts or streams of previous performances? 2014 was amazing and I'd love a better version to re-watch than what I can find on YouTube.
  5. Did it sink? England and the whole of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. By a slim margin. Then woke up the next day and said "We did what?! Oh, F$%^!". Not even sure what that has to do with a JW concert though. It's vulgar to see a live performance in an outside amphitheater? Good thing the Greek's and Roman's didn't build any of those. Waving around lightsabers at a concert by the man who wrote the music for said lightsabers is vulgar as well? Are all you Euro's truly that stuck up? This is an all ages event with TONS of children in attendance. The lightsabers started off small years ago and grew to what it is now. And you know who loves it? JOHN WILLIAMS! Love how playing the national anthem of the country you are in before an event also seems vulgar. I LOVE the anthem played before a hockey or football game. I sing my anthem with pride each and every time. I just refrained from "partaking: in this one as I would at home. Now before you snobby Euro's get your knickers in a twist, I am NOT American.
  6. He emphatically stated with much joy that he's been conducting at the Hollywood bowl every summer since '78 with the exception of 2 years. Last year I know of but no idea when the other was. I'd believe he will be back every year until his health prevents him from doing so. Likely going forward they will be similar joint performances though. Star Wars music live or in any quality pre-recorded form can NEVER get old. My only question about the selections is with the first half being a tribute to films from Paramount Pictures there was no Raiders March. That's the only oddity to the entire night.
  7. Tough crowd. Goes to show you can't please everyone all the time and some of them ever. Happy those who'd not have enjoyed the event got to thumb their nose at it from home. On the other hand, I had an amazing experience, heard some incredible music and now have memories I won't ever forget. I an more than pleased Williams chose to be "safe". I could have sat there and listened all night, even if it was just on repeat. Will be back next year should he chose to continue and I hope he does with another "safe" and "boring" set list.
  8. 7 more sleeps! Trying to get a friend to go even offering to buy him and his gf tickets but he's not yet knowing if he's available that night. Some people need a swift kick in the behind!
  9. How does this thread exist without this..... followed by this..... and of course.... and lastly.... this one is gold! And there are plenty more.
  10. 2 weeks till I board my flight to LA. Very excited!
  11. What's actually tragic about that scene is for all the fanboy lip-service Abbrams paid to whiny OT "purist" Star Wars fans, he F-ed up the sound of the Falcon's guns. And it makes no sense at all.
  12. Summon the Heros doesn't feel as 'Olympic' as the Fanfare and Theme do. Something about the trumpets just instantly puts you in the Olympic spirit. Interestingly I'd never heard of "Olympic Spirit" before tonight. It's a nice piece but IMO doesn't hold a candle to the BEST '88 Olympic Theme. Proud to say I saw it performed live at Olympic Plaza! Working with a committee to explore bidding on the 2026 games I've wondered just who'd be my choice to compose a theme. Williams is top of my list, but, well, he's American.
  13. Are you playing coy are seriously not sure what my post stated? I commented on people complaining that Williams next 2 projects are a Spielberg film and a Star Wars film. The 2 biggest entities in his career, and 2 things he loves dearly. To complain that we are lucky enough to get MORE Williams/Spielberg and Williams/Star Wars is utterly ridiculous. Perhaps Mozart should have composed less operas and symphonies and more tunes about licking his ass to amuse his friends? I don't spend much time on message boards these days because there's just too much stupid in the world to try and comprehend. Was hoping for a set-list from Tanglewood to see if that would give any indication of what my ears may be treated to at the Hollywood Bowl. I think I found that in the other thread where the guy with amazing seats left before the concert was over.
  14. John Williams may never have burst onto the scene, so-to-speak, without Jaws. He was working and doing great stuff prior but Jaws was the massive hit that catapulted Williams, along with Spielberg, into the stratosphere. Then came Star Wars. So complaining about Williams working with Spielberg or on Star Wars just doesn't make any sense. Like complaining that Michael Jordan keeps making new versions of his shoes. Plenty of other composers have worked for years and done good scores without much fanfare. Certainly not to the degree that Williams has enjoyed. And he's earned it, very much so. But without Spielberg loving the Reivers and telling Lucas to use Williams, Harry Potter ans Superman would have a very different themes.
  15. People are complaining Williams will write and conduct Star Wars and Spielberg scores? That doesn't make any sense. They all go hand-in-hand together. Without Spielberg there'd be no Star Wars and likely a little known film composer.
  16. Not sure 10+ hours of driving and a little rain would stop me from attending a Williams live concert. I'm flying 1000 miles and would happily sit in the pouring rain if that's what Mother Nature chooses to bestow upon the Hollywood Bowl that evening. Worst case I'm there and the event is cancelled due to poor weather (or worse). But I couldn't imagine having tickets and spending 3 days mulling over going or not. Why even buy tickets in the first place if you don't like to travel?
  17. Add May 19-20 at the Southern Alberta Jubilee in Calgary to the list of dates. http://calgaryphil.com/event/raiders-of-the-lost-ark-original-film-with-orchestra/2017-05-19/ After the Hollywood Bowl in Sept I'm most excited for this. Already making ticket purchase plans.
