  1. I like my LOTR LOTR'ed and my Zelda Zelda'ed.
  2. That arrangement has been around forever. I'm not a fan of the Superman-like take on Zelda.
  3. That's a really vague term. It means more the use of two pitch centers, not traditional keys, which Williams rarely writes in. And it's not like you just write two things in different keys and slap them on top of each other. Maybe there's a specific, modern compositional process that I'm missing? I heard about bitonality in the Violin Duo Concertante. But I dunno. One piece (not by Williams) that strikes me as decidedly bitonal is a piece I'm singing in college choir right now, by Jaakko Mäntyjärvi. Especially around 2:10. Extended sections of parallel melodies in different keys.
  4. I do have to point out that the tritone has been a fundamental part of Western music for 400 years. These examples are just the most obvious melodic uses of it.
  5. 1. The Legend of Zelda 25th Anniversary Medley 2. Kakariko Village Twilight Princess Theme 3. The Wind Waker Symphonic Movement 4. Gerudo Valley 5. Great Fairy’s Fountain theme 6. Twilight Princess Symphonic Movement 7. The Legend of Zelda Main Theme Medley 8. Ballad of the Goddess from Skyward Sword Source
  6. Her voice was also digitally lowered in Episode I. Not so in Episodes II and III.
  7. The Zelda 25th Anniversary Concert is streaming. Some really special arrangements, not vapid Hollywood sounding stuff. I'm looking forward to the professional recordings on the 25th Anniversary CD!
  8. You can hear it subtly in a lot of the Tatooine material, especially the alternate "Binary Sunset." Also in "Anakin's Betrayal" and music of that vein in the prequels.
  9. All over the place in Star Wars, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. But the clearest usage is near the end of "Burning Homestead."
  10. The Friday the 13th movies have some pretty cool music but I can't really picture myself picking up a box set of it. I remember in a film music class a professor taught us about Dies Irae using the usual examples like Star Wars and Close Encounters. But when it came time for the exam we had to identify it in (skip to 1:07). Hilarious.
  11. Being rude and confrontational is probably not going to elicit a response from Jim.
  12. How does the resolution of current digital movie cameras compare to that of 35 mm film? The RED Epic camera (being used to shot The Hobbit and Prometheus among others) shoots at 5K resolution. I believe 35mm has an estimated resolution of somewhere between 4 and 5K so in terms of resolution alone, the newest digital cinema cameras are a match for 35mm. I suppose we'll know if everything is up to the same quality when films shot on the Epic and similar systems become more common place. I think the Epic's predecessor, the RED One shot at 4K. Did Lucas film the prequels at higher than 1080p? I'm sure I read somewhere that the cameras back then were 1080p, full stop. Yep, they're 1080p.
  13. I love this. I'm really trying to like Tintin but it's leaving me cold. But War Horse is cutting straight to my heart. Amazing.
  14. It wouldn't be easy. Even FSM, one of the top film music magazines, has only interviewed him once. Also, for god's sake, don't pester him about unreleased music and album presentations.
  15. It's part of the Requiem Mass and one of the few sequences not removed by the Council of Trent in the 16th century. But the tradition of quoting it in other music only came about a couple hundred years ago and has nothing to do with its liturgical origins.
  16. Eh, I think Thor's mellowed out a bit. He now seems to accept C&C as a valid way of listening, even if he insists that it's only good for following the narrative of the film and cannot make musical sense. His older posts seemed furious at the fact that C&C scores were even being released. You guys don't seem to realize how close you've gotten to a truce with him.
  17. I kind of hope that stays broken. I like "liking" on Facebook. But a forum? It should be a different experience.
  18. I don't think the title of the film should be mentioned outside of spoiler threads. From now on please refer to it as "upcoming live action Steven Spielberg film."
  19. These are quite good. What we don't have yet is a sense of flow and the musical journey. Once that's in place I think this will sound really special.
  20. The journey from Rivendell to Moria, although they're basically all amazing. I love that track, "The Ring Goes South," and the expanded version in "Gilraen's Memorial." There's something about it that recalls antiquity as well as the tradition of Hollywood fantasy films. Nostalgia. It's true of the whole film and score, too. I feel like Fellowship of the Ring is the grand culmination of the 70s, 80s and 90s blockbusters, while The Two Towers and Return of the King are thoroughly "2000s" films. They lack a certain innocence.
  21. I know, but in full. I think the existing field music is perfect for young Link. For when Link steps out of the Temple of Time after 7 years, I would have liked to have heard a musical evolution. A couple places like Kakariko Village have different music, so why not the field?
  22. Except we usually can have both. Almost no score is released C&C the first time, and often expanded releases, especially these days, include the original album assembly too for only $5 or so more.
