  1. I just read the plot summary on Wikipedia, and, you know what?- it may not be all that bad.

    Cheers to the great master!
  3. Williams will be nominated, but the late James Horner will win, probably for The 33.
  4. Hmm, and I thought that Luke would be killed by Kylo, with Finn and Rey then going to face him, with Finn dying and Kylo revealing himself to be to be Re's brother. Oh, well. And I think the only way a Death Star would have worked would be if they gave it to a Resistance sick and tired of a 30 year war.
  5. If the charm and spark of the OT could be combined with a streamlined version of the prequels' political commentary, the result would be a very good movie.
  6. To drop my two cents into the Superman matter, I always thought that score is superior to Star Wars in terms of chronological flow. More like a tone poem it is. But, as I probably won't listen to TFA until it leaks on the internet or shows up on local radio, I can't really comment on it, other than I am expecting that John will have done his best with the modern cinematic material he has to deal with. I also think that, like Abrams, he is introducing things for this film that another composer(s), or even he himself, might elaborate on in the next two installments.
  7. So, based on what I have read here and in some basic reviews, the whole movie is a nostalgia fest made by a fan for fans, where every character has a corresponding character in the OT, and where every situation has a corresponding situation in the OT. What about originality? Another Death Star. The one in ROTJ was redundant enough already. And what about the First Order? Just sprang out of nothing? If so, that is a very lost opportunity for political and historical commentary. Perhaps the next two films will rectify this somewhat.
  8. Another very beautiful one. Parallels with Leia's Theme and Yoda's Theme, no?
  9. First reactions are always hyperbolic praise or knee-jerk criticism. Patience, everyone
  10. John Williams definitely belongs to the tradition of the great masters and there are some composers who are rightfully considered as "great" that have accomplished much less than him. When some historical detachment will allow it, he will enter the regular books of music history, hopefully along with several other film composers. Very true words. John is more engaged than I have seen him in a long time. Can't wait to see the rest of the interview, regardless of the quality of the interviewer. (p.s. symphonies plural?) Like who? Ravel comes to mind.
  11. Scherzo for X-Wings. With a name like that it has to be good. And what about The Falcon? Will the ship get its own theme?
  12. No, I think it is deeper than that. For example, I very much enjoy Across the Stars, but, I think it lacks the brilliant spark of inspiration that I hear in, say, Princess Leia's Theme. Heart in a piece, I think, is how much personal feeling the composer puts in it. And I am hearing a good amount of personal feeling in the TFA clips.
  13. Well, you guys are probably right. There is an intangible something in Episode I that the other two largely lack.
  14. Similar reaction here. I'm actually getting a bit excited about the score now. I think Williams's music for the prequels, though technically brilliant in places, sounded a bit detached. I think his heart is really in it this time.
  15. Two Williams moments that I think are particularly great are these two from Schindler's List: first from the Main Theme, starting at 2:29 of this video And this portion of Remembrances, where the orchestra comes in sublimely at 1:10 He says so much with so little.
  16. I think John is looking much better then he did a few months ago. It sounds like the score may be a very interesting one indeed.
