  1. Unfortunately I think the Boston performance that was broadcast was not the best performance of this piece. Much better sound quality than the cell phone recording from Glasgow, of course, but a flawed performance. So we still await a quality track.
  2. Season 4 (the original edit) of Arrested Development started to pay off halfway through the season starting with the Lucille episode, as I recall. Yeah the magic and momentum of the original series is gone, but there’s some great stuff there. Glad to hear Season 5 reunites the whole cast.
  3. We love New Girl. We’re only two episodes into the new season. Nick and Schmidt are hilarious, as always. It took Winston a while to find his shtick, but he eventually started stealing the show in the last few seasons. Right now we’re binge rewatching Arrested Development.
  4. Because all this comes at the sacrifice of an adaptation of The Hobbit which captures the particular beauty of that self-contained work. Because too much of it isn’t “from Tolkien”, it’s invented from whole cloth. And, as in the LR, the invented bits are the weakest parts of the movies. Because The Lord of the Rings is not improved by all this new stuff (the “did we need it” argument). Because The Hobbit trilogy is widely regarded as a travesty (travesty, travesty, travesty, travesty, travesty…), which is an especial shame considering not only the greatness of the source material but also the excellent talent involved (Martin Freeman, etc.). And because of it we’re not likely to see a more faithful adaptation of the novel for a number of decades.
  5. Unfortunately, I must agree. The LR (the book) is the sequel to The Hobbit (the book), and they most clearly are two stories. But the The Hobbit movies are indeed more like a LR PT.
  6. It is believed that those issues are what drove this film’s reported poor box office performance. But you’re right that it was too great of a diversion. We didn’t need those posts.
  7. I don’t like TLJ, but I don’t really see the case against Kathleen Kennedy. TLJ is the only one where we were told the director had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted. Granted, again I’m very unhappy with how it came out, but we’ve basically been told that Johnson is off to do his own trilogy and if you don’t like TLJ you can ignore that… everything else will be less experimental.
  8. Another aspect to consider is that many people had written off Star Wars after TPM and AotC, or at least gotten used to the fact that their fandom would be selective. TFA had the monumental task of getting everyone back on board, and, by and large it succeeded—many people are along for the ride. For some, though, it’s all too easy to lump any movie they don’t like in with the preexisting list of movies-they-don’t-like (or movies-that-don’t-exist… just like KotCS). Another point is that I had heard people state that Solo was a bad idea for years before the film’s release. I don’t know why—for me it’s a pretty solid concept.
  9. Okay, great, we’re all on the same page that people critiquing the movie are not all abusive assholes.
  10. So… if you like TLJ… you can’t get a wife. And therefore…
  11. I have to say I like the score, but listening to a performance without such prominent percussion would be more enjoyable, for me. I like this video a lot.
  12. So it is just the percussion that is recorded apart, or several different sections (strings vs. brass, etc.)? When Williams was recording the Sand People cues, would the percussion have been recorded separately? (Just trying to compare apples.)
  13. Crusade is the great sequel of Raiders as Empire is the great sequel of Star Wars The difference is that Empire improves on the original by being a great film—impeccable pacing, script, acting—whereas Raiders is already that. When you watch Empire or Raiders, you get an incredible thrill, because every beat, every shot, every note is damned near perfect. It’s an experience you can get lose yourself in. Where Crusade succeeds is that it brings back the fun and adventure of Raiders. If you like Raiders, you’ll like Crusade—it’s more of the same, plus it brings a lot of good new stuff to the table, getting deeper into Indiana’s history and character and his paternal relationship, albeit it’s obviously much less romantic. It’s only a slight notch below Raiders because, well, it’s not Raiders. Ford is older and less sexy. You know? You like it because it takes you back to the thing, but it is not the thing itself.
  14. It’s not in the movie. Some interviewer was trying to generate buzz, and asked Jon Kasdan if Lando was pansexual. What is he supposed to say, NO?
  15. Heavens! I would never watch a movie in 3D. It’s still dark and colorless. And people complain about Star Wars oversaturation!
  16. A fan edit with better light/color, and just starting at the THREE YEARS LATER mark, would be worth a rewatch.
