So the first cue in New York 1969 ("For Who... Whom?") is indeed pitch-shifted upwards compared to the film version. Look at that frequency line.

Good catch @LB Makes Stuff, you noticed this yesterday and the spectograms confirmed it.

My hunch is the OST version was pitch-shifted upwards so it crossfaded smoothly into Marion's Theme.

How do they even shift the pitch and still keep the good quality? I tried in Audacity and even Melodyne, the results were decent but nowhere close to being in a quality like the original!

great to see that program, better curated than the story in music concert, IMO. Especially the complete, not cut, Rise of Skywalker and Rey and Ben pieces! Probably no recording of this concert, right?

Which arrangement of Cantina Band will you play? Sid Ramin's?

Little edit: Apparently they will only play the first 15 bars of Rey and Ben... :( (which equals 00:00-0:48 of "Farewell" from the OST. Don't know how they will edit that, a direct segue to The Rise of Skywalker, @BSOinsider?

I wish Spotify didn't have this stupid feature that turns the progess bar into a lightsaber whenever you listen to anything Star Wars related. It doesn't even have to be a Star Wars release, it shows up for individual tracks as well. For example, on the Violin Concerto No. 2 album from Deutsche Grammophon.

    Stupid.

Didn't expect such a "suite" ending here. It would have been strange to perform this as a separate piece, but paired with  The Rise of Skywalker it would have been excellent at a concert.

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed to only see this few bars being new when getting the score. I don't know if I'm just TOO used to how the cue goes on, but I found it pretty unsatisfying, to be honest.

  7. Not sure if this is exactly the right thread, but I was able to put together "Rey and Ben" from the Star Wars 9 Suite.

As we already know, it relies heavily on the "Farewell" track from the OST, but it does not include the part from 02:50-03:07 (which could confirm that this part is 10m1 Rey and Ren, if it's not included in the concert version and has another reel number it probably was written last minute because of edits to the scene):

and at 3:52 of the OST track, where it would transition into the victory scene, there's another cut to a rather ominous ending section, which I had to mock up with virtual instruments:

My source for this are leaked orchestral parts for an upcoming Star Wars concert, so there is a small chance this piece could be shortened and edited, but for all the other pieces of this concert that had cuts/edits, it was clearly noted in the sheet music. In the parts of Rey and Ben there is no indication that this has happened.

(Of course, there is also slightly reduced instrumentation for the concert version, as with many Signature Editions, I have not considered that here).

Thanks for responding - that's a shame, but I knew this was a possibility. Riding the Lizard does begin the OST track 'General Grievous, so you're definitely right. It's a strange choice, you'd think. I don't think either of those two are the most popular cues from the OST. Perhaps Williams is fond of them, or something like that.

It is indeed strange, if I had to choose 2 pieces from ROTS for a concert like this, I would choose Anakin's Dark Deeds (especially if they have a choir there already for DotF!) and Immolation Scene, they somehow represent the movie better.

This is just a theory, so don't take anything I'm saying here as fact - but Mark Graham recently posted on Instagram this picture: https://www.instagram.com/p/CvdIKBiSt4Z/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA. I recognise the cue as being Riding the Lizard from Revenge of the Sith. The recent date in the bottom left seems to imply that this version of the score has been prepared recently (and that he's not just looking in the archives for fun). (Keep in mind I have no idea how the JKMS library is set up - this could mean nothing). Perhaps this part of the score is being prepared for a future concert (which seems an odd choice), or maybe even an LTP performance of Revenge of the Sith (though the formatting is a little different to other LTP scores I've seen).. Any thoughts?

    image.png

Unfortunately it's not for an LTP, but as part of an upcoming Star Wars concert...

This are the cues from the prequels that have been prepared for this concert:

    2 FlagParade

    3 AnakinsTheme

    4 DuelFates

    5 AcrossStars

6 GeneralGrievous (the screenshot probably shows the beginning of this piece)

    7 EnterLordVader

A part of this program will feature pieces from the Suite, a source tells me it's an excerpt(?) of Speeder Chase, Rey and Ben and TROS with an attaca to End Credits. Are any of you going there?

I think this point is worth exploring further.  What does exceptional skill even look like?  @michael_grig, you are ultimately asking does a master think of chords or harmony when crafting a theme?  That's a question that only makes sense to a student.  This is also the same question JW might have asked 60 years ago.  So you can't ask that same question of a modern JW and have it make any real sense.

Are you suggesting that Williams doesn't really think about chords or scales at all, and that he has rather built all of it into his musical DNA over a long time and now the "modern Williams" only relies on this instinct?

  12. That's very helpful, thanks a lot!

So is it right to say that Williams has not chords in mind when composing, but scales?

    32 minutes ago, Loert said:

Now, if JW had left it like this, the melody would sound bare and lonely. So to make it sound more fanfare-ish, he "harmonizes" the melody by adding two more notes below each note in the main melody line. This is the 3rd part. But what tones does he use? He simply chooses tones from the mode he is in. Which mode should he pick? First, let's spell out the tones we already have:

I actually just played different notes from D ionian harmonizing the melody and it sounds very similar, so he really just chose random notes I guess? That's so cool XD.
