Faleel still needs an answer (see above) but I have a font question: Anyone know what the font is in the Star Wars: Special Edition 2 Disc sets are? The lettering for "A New Hope," "Music composed and conducted by John Williams" etc. I love that font and I had it years ago but now I can't find it...

Of course! There is hope.

Michael Giacchino's LOST (2004-2010) - live concert tour in 2024
MrJosh replied to Jay's topic in General Discussion
Well Giacchino contacted the user, and now there's an official EP on iTunes of this guy's arrangements! http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/lost-music-from-island-for/id551960444 Giacchino even tweeted about it Super cool That's awesome!!!! -
I'm hoping to hear lots of big thick-chorded chorale type writing in this score with some classic Williams dissonances and nice brass writing. Too bad there will probably be no action writing in this score...I'm always hungering for more of that.

While I've seen the original Alien, my problems with Prometheus have nothing to do with that. I went into the movie knowing it would have a differny tone/ feel than alien...that's totally fine. And there were parts of the movie that did grip me and excite me and I felt like " sweet, this is going to be cool!" But then there were moments that totally took me out of that...characters doing things that defy logic....it was an experience of being sucked into the story and then taken out of it by things that made me think WTF???. And then the very last scene left a bad taste in my mouth.

I actually just watched Sherlock Holmes last week for the first time ( behind the times iknow!) And was surprised by the score...I agree with you. -
Which is sad to me...it could have been so interesting and "cool." I fairly liked the movie but so many things that bothered me. Jason's review back when the film came out pretty much summed up my thoughts about it.

When the last note doesn't match the rest of the piece
MrJosh replied to indy4's topic in General Discussion
Is there a kirky third also? -
That was pretty fun...now make playlists and listen to all "theme from," "March from," "finale " etc etc. Those would be fun playlists!! I think I'm going to do that.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I'm so sad that more cues don't feature Fawkes' theme. It has such an innocence and beauty to its soaring melody...we only get a little taste. Moaning Myrtle's theme is dorky and annoying but I guess that's appropriate for her annoying character. -
I disagree, this is awesomely eerie JW music. It's exactly the type of thing he ripped off from himself and totally botched when composing KOTCS, you know? There's that neat kinda pressing ostinato, right? With appearance by harp and that menacing sort of vocal effect he also used in the library scene in Harry Potter, plus the other synth. Come to think of it, this is some of JW's best underscoring of the 2000s. You are very wrong. I too love the "pressing string ostinato " it is awesome and certainly not boring

The album has some cool extended/ jazzy arrangements of some ideas only briefly heard in the actual score which makes the album unique and also a better listening experience imho since its a collection of tracks made FOR the album. I like this score a lot...if I'm remembering right I think that for volume II, they couldn't find one reel of tape that had a few minor cues on it...so technically isn't the COMPLETE score but almost complete. So I would buy the volume 1 first.

I haven't watched any of TOS but I want to buy this set just to support lalaland ...they are knocking it out of the park with so many quality releases.

Star Wars in 3D starting 2012 (Update: AOTC and ROTS cancelled)
MrJosh replied to ST-321's topic in General Discussion
I agree, Faleel...I was very underwhelmed by the 3D. It wasn't that I was wanting it to be super IN YOUR FACE kind of 3D but I seriously didn't see much added depth through most of the movie except the shots of outer space, which did look pretty nice, and some shots in the podrace. I love Star Wars but the 3D TPM experience wasn't worth my money in my opinion -
I just watched Chopped on Food Network...that show is the bomb!

LOL! The first is early horner, the 2nd the later

Ug ...the completist in me is sad that there are bits of LOTR music that must be taken from video games and DVD menus. Can't wait for your edits, Jason :) -

Some very dramatic music in there!! My favorite of those is the Gospel of John. Beautiful score, beautiful melodies. -
Hmmm so he doesn't use a traditional orchestra? Brass and woodwind sections?

I'm a big fan of Elliot Goldenthal, I think the more you hear of him, the more you understand his unique musical language. His Gothic sound is quite chilling sometimes...like watching a good scary movie. -
1. John Willliams (completist) 2. David Arnold (completist) 3. Jerry Goldsmith 4. Michael Giacchino 5. John Barry 6. Elliot Goldenthal 7. Bernard Herrmann 8. James Horner 9. Danny Elfman 10. James Horner
