I was surprised to read a few months back to find out that he was alive, and thought it was cool that an actor from that generation was still around. He had a great career, but it's sad that he's gone now.

That goes for me too. He lived to a good old age, i vaguely remember not that I was already surprised a few years ago when I heard he was still alive.

Too bad that he should die so soon after that, though. What I find happens more often than not is that I'll think an actor or other famous person is dead only to find out years later that he's ACTUALLY died. I think that was case with Alec Guinness, whom I originally thought had passed away in the mid 80s until he really died in 1999 (or was it 2000?)
