Ollie 1,064
It's a theme that is played out from the begining when Neary asks his family if they want to go see Pinocchio or play goofy golf.It probably is a play on the child inside of Neary, his goal to realize why he is having his visions after the UFO encounter. The film ends with his dreams coming true.
Luke Skywalker 1,805
And its Spielberg favotire cartoon movie (or not?) that's why it has a relation to the story.
Ollie 1,064
I believe it was mentioned that listening to the song was one of Spielberg's possible inspirations for the film.

John Takis 206
One cut of the film (the Special Edition, I think) has Roy trying to convince his kids to go see Disney's Pinocchio. Another (the Theatrical, I think) has him staring wistfully at a Pinocchio toy that plays "When You Wish Upon A Star". The whole "dreamers staring out into space" theme is kind of obvious, I would think.
Ollie 1,064
When you wish upon a starMakes no difference who you areAnything your heart desiresWill come to youIf your heart is in your dreamNo request is too extremeWhen you wish upon a starAs dreamers doFate is kindShe brings to those who loveThe sweet fulfillment ofTheir secret longingLike a bolt out of the blueFate steps in and sees you throughWhen you wish upon a starYour dreams come true

Red 75
I always thought it was to tie-in with Roy realizing his dream, and of course the connection between stars and the aliens/space.A.I. is enough evidence that Spielberg likes Pinocchio.
