SCORE: The Eiger Sanction (complete score analysis)

Omen II

Wow! Excellent work indeed Damien! I I will definitely be revisiting the album with this analysis as a guide. Eiger Sanction is one of my favourite scores from that time period really. It is about time it got some attention here! :)

Thank you so much for your kind and generous comments, gentlepersons! I have no idea if the original tapes exist in the Universal vaults or what condition they are in, but I am more optimistic about a CD release of the film score now than at any time previously.

I think the appreciation of this score is not helped by the movie it is attached to. It is quite obscure and I think even Clint Eastwood would admit it is more than a bit cheesy.

I really enjoyed a listen of the album while following your analysis. Excellent write-up, very informative and entertaining at the same time. The score is actually much more complex and inventive than many give it credit for. My first exposure to the music was when I heard the Main Title on my friend's Film Works album. A few years after that I managed to get a copy of the OST album and I always thought it was, while naturally tied stylistically to the era in which it was made, also a great show case for Williams' multifaceted talent.

I agree, Mikko. The film itself is probably a quarter of an hour or so too long (get to the damned Eiger, already!) and, to modern audiences, is less politically correct than an episode of South Park. However, there is still much to enjoy in the movie if approached in the right frame of mind.

After the Universal logo, the film begins with a panoramic shot of a rainy Zurich accompanied by John Williams’s eclectic main title music, one of the composer’s finest compositions.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but The Eiger Sanction main title is hardly one of his finest compositions given the absolutely colossal weight of this repertoire.

Now that I have that out of the way, I do enjoy this score.
