Totally unnecessary.sorry but you're completely wrong. It's totally necessary. The whole point is to put the audience in a state of vulnerability. What is happening to Carrie is a very private personal thing. The ugliness that follows is brutal and devastating. It allows us to both associate with Carrie and her tormentors. It also puts the audience on edge. If DePalma will dare to go there where else would he dare go. It's one of the most brave and daring sequences in film. I am not a fan of gratuitous nudity or sex in film but this time was necessary to the story. It is one of the reasons the remake is so ineffective.
