Sharkissimo 1,973
A truly nerdy question. In the original film it just sounds muffled, like a man talking into a mask. In the following films it gets progressively more deep and robotic. There's been much speculation on the interwebs. Usually the answer is a delay based effect--chorusing or flanging--others say some form of modulation such as ring mod.
Datameister 2,044
I wish I knew. Somehow, they took a voice that was already among this species' greatest and made it sound even cooler - and in the most perfectly subtle way. C-3PO's voice received some pretty cool treatment, too. Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
I didn't like how they changed his voice in the original film for the DVD version.
Sharkissimo 1,973
I agree. Hate that kind of revisionism. It's like Adywan inserting the Imperial March into his 'Star Wars Revisited.'

Gnome in Plaid 219
My guess would be some sort of subtle flange effect.

A24 4,346
Maybe an octaver or vocoder too.Somehow I think they used something less obvious and not meant for sound manipulation. Like they did for the sound of the lightsaber ...
