I've linked it a short while ago.

 

Could it be that Jackson did the remastering with the IMAX re-release in mind? The use of DNR really lends itself to IMAX.

 

I don't actually think he did, but still. These versions would play quite nicely on the huge screen.

Would have loved this! But why Feb 5? Nothing is open here.

 

Hopefully another showing will be organized here sometime.

IMAX versions of 35mm movies are always heavily DNRed - they have to be.

 

What you call "awful" from looking at your TV will look much better on the huge screen than having all the grain retained but enlarged to the size of watermelons to fit the screen.
