The use of DNR really lends itself to IMAX. I don't actually think he did, but still. These versions would play quite nicely on the huge screen. IMAX versions of 35mm movies are always heavily DNRed - they have to be. What you call "awful" from looking at your TV will look much better on the huge screen than having all the grain retained but enlarged to the size of watermelons to fit the screen.
