Track 3 on Munich CD not by Williams?

Track 3 on the Munich soundtrack is called Hatikvah (The Hope)

Someone mentioned that that piece is not composed by Williams. Here is more information:

Hatikvah (Hope) - Samuel Cohen (1882)

This is the tune of the Israeli National Anthem. It's origin is not certain,

but the words (written by Naphtali Herz Imber) are thought to have been put

to music by Samuel Cohen in 1882. Cohen, an immigrant from Moldavia, is said

to have based the melody on a Moldavian-Rumanian folk song "Carul cu Boi"

("Cart and Oxen"). It seems unlikely that the tune was based on the melody of

a musical theme found in Bedrich Smetana's "Moldau", or that Imber borrowed

the tune from a composition by Cantor Nissan Belzer.

That makes perfect sense, given the Olympic setting. I don't know why, I thought it was obvious when the track titles were revealed that that was the Israeli anthem. I am curious as to whether it is going to be a la Jerusalem of Gold from Schindler's List i.e. a solemn vocal version, a JW orchestral version, or maybe a combination of both. Incidentaly, I think the tune is a fine tune to say the very least, but I am slightely biased.

I'm sure Williams arrangement of it will sound better than the original.

Speaking of which, does anyone know where I can find a recording of his "Star-Spangled Banner" arrangement for the 2004(?) Rose Bowl?

You don't even know what the original sounds like!

......but that doesn't prevent you from probably being right. The usual arrangment of it is too loud and regal for my taste.

Surely his rendition can't be as good as the excellent Goldsmith version heard at the beginning of Poltergeist :music:

And the point of this thread is?

There have been many Williams cds that feature music not written by him that he's adpated and arranged for the score.

Thanks Mark. Now, after Vossk's classic line: "What happened? Who cares!" I have found a companion line to that one.

Actually I wasn't picking on you Roald. I just wondered what you meant because you aked a question in the title and then you answered it in your post.

Oh ok! Sorry then. But I wasn't sure and still am not sure whether Williams chose the existing music or chose to compose a new piece with a similar title.

But I guess the odds of that second thought are about as big as, uh, me becoming a Darth! ROTFLMAO

Not only has Williams included tracks of music that were not composed by him (like on Empire of the Sun), but he's been known to incorporate other works into his own music, like Dvorak's cello concerto on The Witches of Eastwick, or a Chopin mazurka on EotS, amongst others.
