A24 4,333
For those who don't know, the Golden Lion is one of the most prestigious film awards out there. Well done, Guillermo!

Of course I love the Dardenne brothers, even though I only saw three of their movies! This one is incredible. publicist
Disco Stu 15,495
Their style is so minimalist they can be a bit of a chore if you're not in the right mood, but I very much enjoyed L'enfant and Two Days, One Night. The former especially.
A24 4,333
I was constantly at the edge of my seat with Two Days, One Night. I kid you not. The Dardennes are formerly docu makers, it explains their style. With Guillermo winning, it means The Shape Of Water is more artsy then we suspected. I will already order the Blu-ray. BloodBoal 7,538
Who cares? We all know you won't like the film anyway, Cremers. Alexcremers said: The Shape Of Water - Guillermo del Toro (2017) I am not sure why this won the Golden Lion. It starts off well, but soon turns into a generic monster flick. Disappointing. Jason will love it. 2/
Disco Stu 15,495
I hadn't realized Robert Altman's Short Cuts had once won the Golden Lion. For me, it's Altman's greatest film and one of my absolute favorites. Good on them! Naïve Old Fart
A24 4,333
My favorite is actually his most un-Altman-like one: However, for most people it would be the answer to their insomnia. Guillermo's previous film (Crimson Peak) was also surprisingly artsy (visually, design-wise, that is). People expected it to be scary by it but it isn't that kind of movie. Disco Stu 15,495
I love 3 Women. I'm an Altman nut generally.
Brónach 1,302
This has been my most expected movie of the year for a while, together with Nora Twomey's The Breadwinner.
Fancyarcher 350
Awesome! Next the Oscars. It's between del toro & Nolan for the best director award at this point, unless a surprise winner comes out of the blue at this point.
Brónach 1,302
Not having seen either this or Dunkirk, I know I connect with Del Toro's work much better, so there'd be my vote based on everything else before.

M*A*S*H is great, NASHVILLE is great 3 WOMEN is great, A WEDDING is great, COME BACK TO THE FIVE AND DIME, JIMMY DEAN JIMMY DEAN is great, THE GINGERBREAD MAN is passable. The only Altman film I don't like is GOSFORD PARK.
Disco Stu 15,495
Gosford Park is one of my 10 favorite Altmans. I really enjoyed A Prairie Home Companion even if it's relatively inessential.

Disco Stu 15,495
One I still very much want to see is Secret Honor, the one that's a filmed monologue of Philip Baker Hall as post-resignation Nixon.
Fancyarcher 350
Secret Honor is terrific, and Hall is excellent, especially when it comes to carrying the entire film. A true one man show performance of a film.
Disco Stu 15,495
I love those kinds of movies. I recently watched the Mike Leigh short film, A Sense of History, of Jim Broadbent playing a British aristocrat telling the story of his life as he walks around his estate. It's so freakin' good (and on Youtube!).
Fancyarcher 350
I even love it when they're able to make a narrative "one man show" films. All Is Lost was one of my favorite films of 2013, precisely because they were able to do so much with so little. Helps that Redford's performance is so good too.
