Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
I rather stupidly began with the 10th Doctor in my viewing of nuWho, so I went back to the Christopher Eccleston season. This guy is awesome. Pieter Boelen

Wojo 2,453
The season with Eccleston is essential because it lays the groundwork for several plot threads that pervade the Davies years, most notably Bad Wolf and Jack Harkness' immortality. Pieter Boelen 740
Plus his performance as The Doctor was nothing to be ashamed of either. Only one season, but still: Well done, mate!
Sweeping Strings 2,363
Fair enough, if Eccleston had been terrible we wouldn't be eagerly anticipating the start of another new series 12 years on. But he was always too 'ordinary bloke from Manchester' for me, lacking that 'eccentric/slightly mad university lecturer/professor' air that I think is essential to the character. Gruesome Son of a Bitch 6,488
What really started to bug me with nuWho was all the prophecy bullshit. Tennant's departure episode was good and horrible at the same time.

nightscape94 965
But that bit was really effective. Don't tell me you didn't get some tingles when Wilf Noble knocked four times.
Naïve Old Fart 9,533
Actually, I get the tingles when The Doctor realizes what the four knocks are, and what they mean.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Wilf you mean? From that moment on the whole episode is one huge cry fest for me.
Naïve Old Fart 9,533
Yes, Wilf. Goeff Noble was Donna's dad.
Wojo 2,453
The four knocks prophecy from the Tenant specials was more entertaining and shorter lived than those that followed in the Moffat years. The Doctor's name, the question, bah, that shit dragged out for years and we still don't know the Doctor's name anyways. I figured Steve.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
The crack in time that he introduced in season 5, then ignored for a few years only to get back to mentioning it in Smith's final episode. Blech...

FYI, The Doctor's name is a mathematical formula, that is completely unpronounceable to anyone who is not from Gallifrey.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
I'm sure, but that's fucking boring. And not something anyone should ever make a story arc about.

Disco Stu 15,495
Your words and deeds! I'm not a groveling Moffat fanboy, but I love a lot of what he did during his tenure. It was certainly never a bad show under his watch.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Moffat has shown to have some serious shortcomings in his tenure as showrunner, and his overstayed his welcome a bit IMO. But hate is too strong a word. Naïve Old Fart
Disco Stu 15,495
I hope that in a couple of years people start to be more cleareyed about what a strong writer he was throughout his showrunning seasons. Some really really great stuff. It happened with RTD, I remember many fans had a lot nasty things to say about him by the end.
#SnowyVernalSpringsEternal 10,265
Great writer, not so great as a show runner. That's probably his main problem. Naïve Old Fart
Naïve Old Fart 9,533
Agreed. Except the last Christmas special (which I will buy when it's issued with series 35), I own every one of SM's episodes as show runner. I even watched DEEP BREATH, today. Heck, I double-dipped for the Blu end-of MS set (the 50th ann. concert, at the RAH is stunning!). SM is not bad, but his tenure won't go down on DW history, as one of the best. Disco Stu 15,495
Even his most recent episode was just fantastic. I loved that Xmas special. The one with Nick Frost as Santa was amazing, my favorite special of the whole series.

Disco Stu 15,495
It's like an inverse. None of my favorite episodes of the RTD era were written by the showrunner, while all of my favorites of the Moffat era were.

Wojo 2,453
The Christmas Invasion was weird because it showed the Doc nearly dead after a regeneration until past the halfway mark, but after regenerating into Smith and Capaldi, this did not happen. Fortunately, too, or the TARDIS would have crashed and killed the story.
