Surprisingly to myself I've seen about ten of these. As lists go, it's about the stuffiest you'll find, but I appreciate their earnest approach all the same and would take it every time over the frequent populist ones.

I've seen this posted like 50 times on FB and different sites yesterday. They really treat it all that seriously?

Film critics lists? Pfff... It's a such a funny profession anyway. I'd say I've read much more interesting things about films from so-calld amateur geeks than so-called respectable critics. I'm not exactly what's so respectable about it, especially at the time of internet.

Karol
From a storytelling point of view, from a directing point of view, there is one thing I associate with what he does, which is calm. There is such an inherent calm and inherent trust of the one powerful image, that he makes me embarrassed with my own work, in terms of how many different shots, how many different sound effects, how many different things we’ll throw at an audience to make an impression. But with Kubrick, there is such a great trust of the one correct image to calmly explain something to audience. There can be some slowness to the editing. There’s nothing frenetic about it. It’s very simple. There’s a trust in simple storytelling and simple image making that actually takes massive confidence to try and emulate. - Christopher Nolan

About as seriously as the US treats their own, however much that is.

It's just a list for musing over Karol, relax.

Indeed it is also a list from which I have seen very few films. Apparently I am a dilettante of the worst order.

Ars superior est vita hominum.

"We pop out and come into the world and music is there. We didn't invent it - it's all organised in the atmosphere by divinity or whatever. It's a miracle." - John Williams-

I think music is a stream of some kind. It could be blood. It could be water. It could be ether. Whatever it is it seems to be a living, organic force that’s in motion, that serves humanity and is part of humanity and part of what describes us as humans. We sing, play, dance, all the things that we do. And there is a vibrant and great literature we have been given. ... As musicians, we join the stream. We swim in the stream with all the other millions of music makers. It’s a life force, a strong one, surrounding us and we are part of it. -John Williams-

Always makes me laugh when people see these things as an afront to their very being, a personal attack on their own supremely authoritive tastes.

I have seen 15 or so. That's still less than I should have. I intend to mark some of these off my to-watch list before my summer ends.

Did I? I just don't understand the obsession with lists.

Not that I put any stock into these stupid lists, but it's about time something knocked Citizen Kane off top spot.

Vertigo was mysterious, interesting and had a magnificent score. Citizen Kane had none of those qualities for me - it remains possibly the most overrated film I've ever seen.

I won't be making lists. But I will give you some titles that are dear to me, for one reason or another. Some of them end up on best of lists, some of them don't.

Eyes Wide Shut
The New World
Magnolia
There Will Be Blood
Titus
Death Proof
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
The Prestige
Memento
Amadeus
The Cranes Are Flying
Rear Window
Vertigo
Zodiac
The Seventh Seal
Fanny & Alexander
Basic Instinct
Master & Commander
Jaws
Batman Returns
Femme Fatale
JFK
East of Eden
Canal
Ashes and Diamonds
Europa
Mulholland Drive
L.A. Confidential
Chinatown
My Winnipeg

I'm sure I could update it with different other stuff. But that's what I came up with right now, without thinking much.

Many good picks.

Here's my 'movies-that-still-and-utterly-blow-me-away' list without thinking or numbering them. The list is getting shorter as I grow older and most are downright mainstream yet with a lot of artistic ambitions, because those are the kind of movies I love the most. You won't find many of the snooty movies of the BFI list.

Blade Runner

2001: A Space Odyssey

Watchmen

300

The Duellists

Empire Of The Sun

Alien

Howards End

Rocky

Eyes Wide Shut

The Others

Barton Fink

La Gloire De Mon Père/Le Chateau De Ma Mère

Magnolia

Amelie

Manhattan

The White Ribbon

28 Days Later

Ed Wood

Sweeney Todd

Some movies that are not on the list have blown me away too but I didn't include them because I've only seen them once, such as There Will Be Blood, The Assassination Of Jesse James, Titus, Frida, The Elephant Man, Chaché, Wages Of Fear, Cleopatra, Adaptation, Little Children, Dogville, The New World ...

Alex

I can never list movies... I'm bound to leave out more than a few. Maybe if I spend enough time I could do one, but I can never be arsed.

Anyway nice list crocodile, I don't agree with quite a number of it, but it's a nice mix of the arty and the mainstream fun.

Thank you, but it wasn't supposed to be a list. I just show you what I like. It changes every now and then there are plenty of things missing. I just hard to find to compare things that are important to those that are simply wildly entertaining. And also to those that might be flawed but have special meaning to me. They all have their place and chosing one above the others wouldn't make any sense. It's futile and pointless.

Only the first three are in descending order:

Jaws
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Pulp Fiction
Back to the Future
Key Largo
Whistle Down the Wind
North By Northwest
The Good the Bad and the Ugly
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Aliens
Some Like it Hot
Laura
One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest
Airplane
Lawrence of Arabia
Evil Dead II
The Shining
Superman: The Movie
The Odd Couple

Just realised how much comedy rules my taste. And thanks to Karol for reminding me that I STILL haven't seen Mulholland Drive.
