I've seen this posted like 50 times on FB and different sites yesterday. They really treat it all that seriously?

Film critics lists? Pfff... It's a such a funny profession anyway. I'd say I've read much more interesting things about films from so-calld amateur geeks than so-called respectable critics. I'm not exactly what's so respectable about it, especially at the time of internet.

About as seriously as the US treats their own, however much that is.

It's just a list for musing over Karol, relax.

Posted

Indeed it is also a list from which I have seen very few films. Apparently I am a dilettante of the worst order.

Posted

Always makes me laugh when people see these things as an afront to their very being, a personal attack on their own supremely authoritive tastes.

Posted

I have seen 15 or so. That's still less than I should have. I intend to mark some of these off my to-watch list before my summer ends.

Did I? I just don't understand the obsession with lists.

I'm sure you'll share it at one point or another. ;)

And YAYAYAYSYAY TO VERTIGO. The best!

As lists go, it's about the stuffiest you'll find, but I appreciate their earnest approach all the same and would take it every time over the frequent populist ones.

Hey there are a lot of Criterion titles there ;)

Not that I put any stock into these stupid lists, but it's about time something knocked Citizen Kane off top spot.

Vertigo was mysterious, interesting and had a magnificent score. Citizen Kane had none of those qualities for me - it remains possibly the most overrated film I've ever seen.

It's a great list, from a certain point of view. I'd like to see a couple of my own up there, but hey ho. Frankly, I'm surprised there isn't a single Spielberg on it.

Posted

It'll just be a boring rundown of my personal faves. Hardly the greatest ;)

I'm at work right now so it ain't gonna be soon!

Let's see your list, Karol :)

Posted

I won't be making lists. But I will give you some titles that are dear to me, for one reason or another. Some of them end up on best of lists, some of them don't.

Eyes Wide Shut

The New World

Magnolia

There Will Be Blood

Titus

Death Proof

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

The Prestige

Memento

Amadeus

The Cranes Are Flying

Rear Window

Vertigo

Zodiac

The Seventh Seal

Fanny & Alexander

Basic Instinct

Master & Commander

Jaws

Batman Returns

Femme Fatale

JFK

East of Eden

Canal

Ashes and Diamonds

Europa

Mulholland Drive

L.A. Confidential

Chinatown

My Winnipeg

I'm sure I could update it with different other stuff. But that's what I came up with right now, without thinking much.

Many good picks.

Here's my 'movies-that-still-and-utterly-blow-me-away' list without thinking or numbering them. The list is getting shorter as I grow older and most are downright mainstream yet with a lot of artistic ambitions, because those are the kind of movies I love the most. You won't find many of the snooty movies of the BFI list.

Blade Runner

2001: A Space Odyssey

Watchmen

300

The Duellists

Empire Of The Sun

Alien

Howards End

Rocky

Eyes Wide Shut

The Others

Barton Fink

La Gloire De Mon Père/Le Chateau De Ma Mère

Magnolia

Amelie

Manhattan

The White Ribbon

28 Days Later

Ed Wood

Sweeney Todd

Some movies that are not on the list have blown me away too but I didn't include them because I've only seen them once, such as There Will Be Blood, The Assassination Of Jesse James, Titus, Frida, The Elephant Man, Chaché, Wages Of Fear, Cleopatra, Adaptation, Little Children, Dogville, The New World ...

Dogville is a crazy movie!

I can never list movies... I'm bound to leave out more than a few. Maybe if I spend enough time I could do one, but I can never be arsed.

Anyway nice list crocodile, I don't agree with quite a number of it, but it's a nice mix of the arty and the mainstream fun.

Posted

Thank you, but it wasn't supposed to be a list. I just show you what I like. It changes every now and then there are plenty of things missing. I just hard to find to compare things that are important to those that are simply wildly entertaining. And also to those that might be flawed but have special meaning to me. They all have their place and chosing one above the others wouldn't make any sense. It's futile and pointless.

Only the first three are in descending order:

Jaws

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Pulp Fiction

Back to the Future

Key Largo

Whistle Down the Wind

North By Northwest

The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Kind Hearts and Coronets

Aliens

Some Like it Hot

Laura

One Flew Over the Cukoos Nest

Airplane

Lawrence of Arabia

Evil Dead II

The Shining

Superman: The Movie

The Odd Couple

Just realised how much comedy rules my taste. And thanks to Karol for reminding me that I STILL haven't seen Mulholland Drive.

I STILL haven't seen Mulholland Drive.

You need to see it.

Lee, your list, is....impressive

Can't believe Star Wars isn't any anybody's list.

I'll post mine tonight. But Star Wars won't be on it. YOU BET VERTIGO WILL

Posted

I've not seen Vertigo in over ten years. It's a great film, but I've seen North By Northwest about ten times. I'll rewatch the former and no doubt want it on my list.

I watch it a couple times a year

Herrmann alone justifies me some Hitchcock lovin'.

But yeah, I just friggin' ADORE the Saul Bass North By Northwest opening titles. And they remind me of Mad Men.

Posted

Oooo. Yes they do come to think of it! Hitchcock night baby! And watchmen, and scary movie night. Lol

Posted

The list is interesting, although I've only seen about 11 films from it.

North by Northwest is awesome and I love Herrmann's score! But it can't beat Vertigo, my favourite Hitchcock film.

Funny enough, the last time I watched both films was about 2 weeks ago ;)

I need to pull a Hitchcock marathon myself now I think about it.

Posted

Indeed! I'll have to pre-order it this weekend.

Let's schedule a JWFan Hitchcock marathon. We need to watch a certain movie from a list within a short timeframe and have a thread on it!

Posted

We tried to do that on a chat about three years ago...

Suffice to say, it didn't go well. We talked about anything but the film.

Karol

Posted

Hey I remember those! It wasn't that we didn't discuss the film, which I'm sure we didn't, but that only like 2 or 3 members participated each week. I think it turned into just a regular forum discussion for each film, but it dwindled down.

Posted

See, the management should nurture and promote such ideas.

I think a regular thread like that would be great.

Can't believe Star Wars isn't any anybody's list.

Star Wars used to be on my list but an important parameter for me is that the film still needs to wow me today.

Just noticed a great oversight with regards to my list: I forgot to put E.T. The Extra Terrestrial on it.
