I know this is one of those polls that will disappear after a day or two. But that's ok. Which do you prefer; the majectic, awesome orchestration of the Hook Flying theme or the classic sound of the ET flying theme? I like Hook better. But yeah. Vote. :)

Well what's not to like about it?!? Yeah maybe it doesn't need to be repeated a couple hundred times... but... PUKING?! We are talking about scores (well themes) here! Does Hook deserve to be regurgitated on?

I can't speak for Neil, but I was not trashing Hook. I was trashing the extreme over-the-top-ness of the statement. Overly ostentasious (sp?) if you will.

I love Hook. It is one of my absolute favorite scores. But there's no need to go completely off the deep end to show support for it.

Hook is a fantastic score, beautifully child-like. However E.T. is just a stonking piece of music. Instantly recognisable, classic! I voted E.T., because it was just the right thing to do.

Well, the Hook flying theme is one of Williams most heroic moments, the last 3 minutes of Remembering Childhood are amazing, better than the E.T. Flying theme.

You may like and prefer all you want but it's E.T. that is synonymous with cinema, just like Star Wars could be seen as the Earth's anthem. It's a film music standard, an all time classic, a cinematic milestone, a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Even non-fans know the tune. Saying that this cue or that theme is "better" sounds a bit foolish.

BTW, E.T. sounds more majestic than Hook.

Because Hook seems to get so much hype on here. I see it regularly mentioned among this boards member's favorite scores.

The E.T. score gets mentioned on here from time to time but not nearly as much.

Then agaiun this is talking about just one theme not which score is better overall. So that can explain it.

I'd have a hard time choosing between the two scores, but between those specific themes, E.T. wins.

I agree, MSM. For sure. Nothing that I've heard really stacks up to it. ET comes close simply because of its complexity... But I like Hook better... Easier to listen too... One can relax and enjoy more. Oh and I personally believe that Hook is soooo much more majestic than ET. Peter's theme is a theme of accomplishment; a theme that celebrates. The ET theme is a fun, happy theme... Hook as a score is much more majectic, as is the flying theme, than anything ET has. **But I'm not saying ET isnt good: just saying its not nearly as majestic as Hook**

Hook is a great score of course, and as such it deserves to be mentioned a lot. E.T. is simply beyond that. It is such a classic memorable score that it has become ingrained in our collective psyche and doesn't need to be hyped up.

nothing in Hook is as good as ET.

ET is John's greatest work, Hook is just a footnote.

and William doesn't like ET so that is why he thought it would lose.

But the Hook score has a lot more of memorable melodies en a freshness which E.T. lacks certainly in the middle cues (this has been mentioned before by someone).

I disagree. E.T. is one of JW's greatest scores and albums, a perfect listening experience from back to back. But Hook is IMO JW's richest score, so full of ideas. And Flight to Neverland is one of the tracks I usualy skip on that CD.

No, Hook sounds a bit more kitsch. I grew tired of it pretty soon. The first track still rocks though, despite the fact that it never was used in the movie. Oh yeah, the Jazz Pop track is also good. But the rest of the album sounds very kitschy to me these days, melodies and all, like a bad Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The score for Hook has a wealth of melodic and thematic devlopment - probably more than any score he?s ever done. This makes it impressive and very accessible. Because JW is so true to whatever movie he is doing, the score takes on the strengths and faults of the movie, IMO.

So the score doesn?t have the kind of balance ET does. ET earns its sentimentality. The score?s early moments are more understated and earnest. The music develops in a way that makes for a rewarding payoff because everything builds towards a natural and fitting end. The score can get away with being shamelessly manipulative for the last 20 minutes or so because we?ve bought into the experience and the music is so true to the motivations of what is unfolding on screen and to everything that came before.

Hook, in contrast, is more obvious in its manipulation and sappiness. Its not a criticism of JW to say his score follows the same lines. The score, like the film, keeps pushing are buttons over and over. So as a matter of preference, ET is better, but only because a score is going to be bound by the movie its written for. People who love the movie Hook will have gotten the perfect score I would think. And, of course, we can appreciate the score even without being a fan of the film which is essentially my view of it.

After all, its no simple feat to write a couple hours of emotionlly accessible music with distinct, emotionally direct themes and with his usual compositional integrity and with his usual attention to the demands of the film.

That's one clear, concise and correct analysis you gave us there, Adam! Thanks!

nothing in Hook is as good as ET.

ET is John's greatest work, Hook is just a footnote.

and William doesn't like ET so that is why he thought it would lose.

Joe, who remembers ET coming in 2nd to ESB in the Official JW Top 10 scores.

1) Hook is the greater score, NOT E.T..

2) Your logic about me thinking why E.T. would lose is UTTERLY flawed Joe. I may dislike E.t., but I dislike Hook EVEN MORE. Which you should know Joe! Oh and just for the record my dislike for a film has ZERO bearin on my feelings towards a score. A score is a completely seperate entity from the film when taken by itself.

3) Regardless of what was 2nd ESB is and WILL REMAIN number 1! :shakehead:

Ok, tell me what's not good about E.T. and where it was not so great in the movie.

I don't believe he said it was not so great in the movie, as it was perfection in the movie, the epitome of film scoring from the word go.

Amen! And just listening to the score makes this all evident.

I think Hook is better than ALL of the Harry Potter scores.

P.S. - However there is nothing on Hook that even rivals Fawkes.
