  1. I am exstatic that Williams got two nominations!!! BUT this could mean his votes will divide amoung the two scores. I hate this situation. Williams is the clear winner but there is the danger that Academy will give the Oscar to a foreigner or new comer. This has happened way too often. I don't want to be negative but I fear Academy makes another weird move and Santaolalla wins the Oscar.
  2. I forgot to list these: Rudy Patton Air Force One Lion Heart Blue Max Indiana Jones scores
  3. Are we still at it? This matter cannot be or should not be settled. Everybody has their own opinion and no amount of persuasion or listing of perks and flaws of an individual composer can change the way one feels about their music.
  4. My favorite cheer up scores are: Superman Sinbad Jurassic Park Hook Amazing Stories:The Mission Independence Day Atlantis Chicken Run First Knight Raiders of the Lost Ark Tracks: Cadillac of the Skies (the concert version) The Face of Pan (both film version and the concert version) Mastadge Drag (Star Gate) Forth Eorlingas Fawkes the Phoenix
  5. These are just few examples where the theme can be heard: Disc 1 Track 13 0;39-> (the rising string motif that is turned over to the woodwinds). Disc 2 Track 2 0;15-0;44 (the french horn line buried in the rest of the orchestra; this is another development of the theme, not quite the finished version). The passage similar to that which is heard on the Weathertop fight can be heard on the Track 14 of the Disc 2 as the Fellowship flees through the halls of Moria and Aragorn is leading them. Disc 3 track 5 4;48 -> (The rising fanfares). Once again the themes is not the same but powerfully heroic. The theme is very closely related to the Fellowship theme as it says in the liners. Departure of Boromir (heartbreaking)
  6. Gollum is a great track and as richuk I was dissappointed that the Hobbit's Understanding theme was missing from the OST. The whole set is full of great cues and special high lights for me are the Prologue, Shire music, Council of Elrond, Moria ... I could go on and name every cue and sequence. This set is truly awesome. And I still find new things and notice new details. That is truly a mark of a great score when you still after 5 years find it so interesting emotionally and intellectually. And finally I know where Aragorn's theme is After 4 years I finally know where it is!
  7. If it makes you happy Joe it seems that the AOTC is going to be voted out
  8. That happens to be my favourite Isengard theme appearance in the whole TTT.
  9. The Isengard theme and the Orc Five Beat Pattern have very powerful variations in FOTR too. The Great River and Amon Hen sequence contain my absolutely favourite versions of the themes. TTT contains many agressive variations to be sure but I would have wanted to hear even more of the theme in the movie since half of the movie is about Isengard's war against Rohan.
  10. You may hate the AOTC but it's just childish to claim all other people are dumb if they do not agree with you.
  11. I am quite relieved if the truth be told. I think this Stone film would not have been a good assignement for Williams anyway.
  12. The Moon Raker had one Williams nod. Drax' Venice laboratory has an electronic lock on it. The sequence which unlocks the door is the CEO3K 5 note pattern. It was kind of funny when I first saw the film.
  13. That's right! Kids have no proper education when it comes to watching films. Too much choice has lowered their patience threshold. Too much spoonfeeding has destroyed their ability to look beyond the obvious. Most of you here suffer from it. ---------------- Alex Cremers Oh how low the humanity has gone when individuals seem to have their own opinions
  14. A very nice review deimos. For once a review that has a decent bit about the score I will have to wait untill the 17th of Feb. to see the film as it opens then in Finland.
  15. JNH's Atlantis is an excellent fantasy score. The choir work is amazing and the themes are wonderful. Shore really captures the Rohan culture with his music in TTT. I view it as the second act of a big work that naturally follows FOTR and expands and evolves the LOTR music. I also think that the OST album is the most balanced of the three.
  16. Well my favourite fantasy scores are the SW hexalogy, the LOTR trilogy (a huge surprise I am sure ), HP scores, Krull and a whole legion of others. I have not heard Goldsmith's Legend but after I read that praise from Drax I thin I should look it up.
  17. I have not even found ST Nemesis anywhere in Finland. Apparently it was not released here
  18. I have been amazed how good soundtracks you can find in a public library. I found some gems like the expanded Conan the Barbarian and Goldsmiths Blue Max and Rozsa'a Ben-Hur 2 CD box to mention few. Our soundtrack section in the libraries of Helsinki is quite extensive and in my initial search I even found few Williams scores that I had not listened to before. Unfortunately the score collection is scatterd through the Helsinki area libraries so ordering and reserving the scores from other libraries can be hard sometimes since they take reserve fee for the book/CD/DVD. And Of course I have no idea where half of the libraries are located. Perhaps I should go on a Helsinki wide library tour
  19. I have been listening to Midway for few days now and I can't understand what the March is doing on the album. It is heard only briefly in the main body of the score and never in that march rendition. It seems to be totally separate from the score. It is funny how Men of the York Town March theme is used much more in the score and it is not nearly as famous as the Midway March. Is the march used in the movie more (tracked or something?) or is it just a separate invention? It is a shame it is not used more since it is really an excellent theme. BTW The album is getting better with multiple listenings.
  20. I love Williams' fugues. I did not mention these before just to limit the very long list of great Williams string pieces Those you mention above are excellent examples of his fugue writing. Black Sunday Fugue also comes to mind.
  21. No it does not have to be Arab but we (atleast I) associate it immediately with their music. I can't help it. It is ingrained in my brain. It is a stereotype and convention. Film music is full of conventions and composers tend to use them. Wailing singing style is indeed very old and it usually expresses grief and mourning. In some instances it works and in others it does not.
  22. I concur whole heartedly with that statement. A truly beautiful score.
  23. Is SW a fantasy score or in what catergory that music must be placed or is it a category of its own??
