  1. Its funny that he crafts with a piano yet hardly ever uses it in his scores. Stefan Cosman, I can agree with this idea if he was not continuing a movie series developed by 4 other movies and hours of score. Celeste has proven itself to be the only keyboard usage in these scores. Not only that but it is the most important instrument of the Harry Potter scores. What would the main Hedwig theme be if it was on the piano? 100 percent less magic. The celeste is associate with HP not the piano. If he had perhaps written the same part, on to the celeste with a nice minor string pad behind it, it would have worked much better.
  2. Sorry to say it but you're a very shallow and uneducated Williams fan. When JW uses piano its usually 1) Part of the Ensemble as a doubler or percussion, - Jaws, Star Wars, Munich 2) As a Soloist in Concerto like form - mostly the cues from ET. Active part, with accompaniment. 3) As a soloist playing/presenting a previously developed/new theme. Schindler's List (Pallette cleanser from the orchestra, violin combo). Presumed Innocent, Minority Report, Sabrina. In these examples his usages are elegant. He never just does thos non thematic, minor, arpeggio, sappy 2 chords things. His usage has direct purpose.
  3. That's not the same usage. Think about it, the only time JW uses that sappy minor key TV ish piano I think is presumed innocent. Star Wars? No. Harry Potter? No. Jones? No. Other composers... Shore LOTR? No. Why only use it for one scene then? I don't get it. It was out of characther for his own score. The rest of which I enjoyed to a small degree.
  4. Well I was thinking of the firm. But JW hardly ever uses that solo piano BS. Why? Because it is a cop-out! Its easiest to write and belongs on TV or non fantasy movies. Besides the manner in which it was used was weak. After a big main title with full orchestra, to go to a piano.
  5. Don't you think if JW wanted to use Piano in the first three he would have? Doyle in 4? Sure it belongs in the orchestra, but in the ensemble. I found this element to be out of charachter for the movie series. Something that just stuck out horribly. He's a wizard not a lawyer.
  6. Has it not been shown enough that Harry Potter = celeste, not PIANo.
  7. I thought I was in for a disaster when I heard solo piano in the opening minute of Harry Potter. After 4 movies with no piano this guy just brings in a piano, and ignores the other composer's palletes. I was like forget this. Score was weak but not as weak as Doyle's.
  8. I think musically this is the most well written concert piece of JW's career. It stands right next to the shostakovitch with no weaknesses.
  9. No mistake. They are just finishing thier line.
  10. Thanks for the cynical answers. Why bother posting?
  11. Pull up the track The Airplane/ The gates/The Stone Faces/ The Ridge.. from North By Northwest listen at: -34 for that phrase ( tell me that this phrase couldn't have easilly been passed for JW in A new Hope desert scenes) the around.... -42 Seconds, (for like ten seconds till the fanfare) tell me that that phrase couldn't have been from Chamber of Secrets exactly as is. -Listen to the few bar prhase around 3.53 (Jaws anyone?) again at 4.58 ! its just like jaws! -9.09 Could this fanfare not easilly be from Empire Strikes Back!? (ok maybe not the rythm) what are your comments?
  12. Orchestration is best learned by yourself through years of diligent study. Teachers can direct you what to study, but you must study often and an in what you are most interested and least interested. 1 or 2 classes in university will do very little beyond telling you the basics. The best method I found was grabbing scores and going to sit through orchestra rehearsals.
  13. Are there any boots to the missing music in this movie? The soundtrack album seems incomplete by a considerable margain.
  14. In the first act of SL there is all this party music, playing up till the first ghetto scene. Is this all JW? Anyone have these tracks on a CD?
  15. That is quite a charming story! I also asked around and just everyone I spoke to said that Williams was quite busy and constantly in demand while in Boston. My impressions of Williams were very positive, he looks to be in good health of mind and body. He was well recieved by the orchestra (you could easily spot their reverence for him) and of course the audience went simply mad for him during the composer's own works and his encore. His movement and conducting seemed to have strength behind it and in general he seemed to posess the body of a much younger man. Fortunately I had excellent seats for the concert and had a point blank vantage point of Williams at the stand. Several things were of interest to me. Firstly, on some of the Hermann works Williams actually made vocal noise, either humming a string passage here and there or blowing wind through his lips (quite loudly!) during an acceleration. Secondly when not conducting to picture the boston pops adapted the typical behind the beat classical response to the conductor's baton. This was very noticeable! Anyone who has seen a master conductor from the old school you can see how obvious this is. Especialy the love scene from vertigo was behind the beat, and very beautiful! While conducting to click the orchestra played right on top of JW's beat. JW adapted a considerablly slower tempo for Superman. And in general the orchestra played very squarely. All though you can make the argument the Boston Pops has more proficient players I enjoy the playing of the LA players better. I expect the NY players will be great when i see Williams later this year. Anyway it was a very nice concert, even though it was rather "lite" in its program. Not really exploring anything in depth, but touching on very many pieces
  16. Agreed with both (although kind of contradictory to each other). I imagine for this price there would be a chorus also.
  17. I don't think John has ever written anything unique, he is primarily an imitator. Same with mozart.
  18. Everyone is welcome to their opinion. If you know anything in this business is that you must write what you are hired to write. Not many composers have the liberty of writing what they want or writing without the hassle of a producer or director. I just posted something I was working on that day. It is not a style I particually enjoy but that is part of the business. Write what you are hired to write, get your check and move on. If you make it to the A list you get more barganing room.
  19. Pretty safe monitor speakers for my studio rig. Accurate bass reflex. The most accurate headphones; all pros own these. without spending super $$$ AKG240s but be warned it sounds very DIFFERENT with the flatness of these headphones, yet the seperation and accuracy is mind blowing.
  20. I remember listening to that CD for the first time last year. I was wearing headphones and working on the computer and I actually threw my headphones off when it happened in that cue because I was totally unprepared for it. The people around me must have thought I was crazy. the beatles were mono and their albums were amazing.
  21. Well i figured its time I uploaded one: http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/120056/LM...ebrate-mp3.html couldn't find somewhere to host it so i choose this
  22. All my experiences have shown me that the studio interferes because they believe that they are in control of the success of the product. They get so focused on some little detail that they can often miss the big picture. A good producer gives notes to the director on non-artistic things, they allready had the chance to say on the artsy things
  23. it would take a book of 1000 pages to come anyway close to explaining it.
  24. How did you get seperation from the orginal music trax?
