  1. Thanks chaps, I've made the necessary edits. Don't know why I forgot Jaws 2?! Kind of bizarre as Ricard also forgot about Jaws 2 when he was doing the 'Essesntial Williams' list. Wierd!!!!
  2. Here goes: 1. Superman 2. Empire Strikes Back 3. ET 4. Empire Of The Sun 5. Hook 6. Raiders Of The Lost Ark 7. A.I. 8. Born On The Fourth Of July 9. Indiana Jones & Temple Of Doom 10.Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone -Tim.
  3. This may have been done before, but below is a complete chronological list of all Williams footage/interviews and other content available on DVD which should be of interest to many of you. I may have missed some details, so please advise of any errors, omissions etc. Fiddler On The Roof - sort of, look to the left of the screen during the ballet shooting sequence and you can catch a glimpse of Williams observing the shooting. (R1 only) Jaws - Making of interview (3mins approx.) & gallery photos of recording sessions (Williams smoking a cigar is a good one!) Family Plot - Making of interview (10mins approx.) Midway - Williams featurette (7mins approx.) & sound featurette (30secs) (R1 only) Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - Making of interview (4mins approx.) Superman - Making of interviews (parts 1 & 2)(5 mins approx.) & isolated score & alternate music cues (the main title is great as there is a few seconds of studio hustle, with Williams asking someone to close the double doors and asking the LSO to settle down) & Donner/Mankiewicz's commentary praises Williams score on numerous occasions. Jaws 2 - Williams featurette (5mins approx.) 1941 - Making of interview (7mins approx.) & isolated score (R1 only) ET - Williams featurette (10mins approx.) & Live at the Shrine (25 mins approx.) & Live score audio option (not isolated alas) The Witches Of Eastwick - Isolated score Jurassic Park - Gallery (lovely photo of Williams composing at the piano in his Amblin office). The Lost World - Making of interview (3mins approx.) & gallery photos of recording session. Amistad - Making of (15sec shot of the recording session) Saving Private Ryan - Biography (cast and crew) The Phantom Menace - Williams featurette (5mins approx.) Making of (recording session footage, some repeated from the featurette) (3mins approx.) & Duel Of The Fates music video. A.I. - Williams featurette (5mins approx.) Attack Of The Clones - Love featurette (1min approx.) & Across The Stars music video & DVD-rom content (the latter of which I have yet to access) Minority Report - Featurette (x2 interviews) (4mins approx.) & biography In addition to the above, a few audio commentaries that are worth mentioning include Oliver Stone's 'BOT4J', 'JFK' & 'Nixon', he praises Williams often. Alan Parker's commentary on 'Angela's Ashes' also finds Williams being applauded as a genius! Well said! Finally Randy Newman's 'Pleasantville' commentary features a couple of anecdotes on Williams and also Goldsmith. A very entertaining commentary if you can find a copy on region 1, as unfortunately the region 2 DVD does not have the Newman commentary.
  4. Being a huge Gerhardt & National Phil fan there is no argument in my honest opinion. Honorable mention must go to the Skywalker Symphony recording as it was the first non-soundtrack Williams cd I purchased. I remember being so excited as it was the first time he had devoted a complete cd to the trilogy, and also the first time I saw a picture of the maestro. -The only other score I remember the Skywalker Symphony doing was Alan Silvestri's 'Soapdish', ultimately they were just a session orchestra i suppose. Anyone know of any others?
  5. It's the orchestral version of the 'song soundtrack cd' arrangement that was specially recorded, so I believe.
  6. Excellent! come to think of it, must get my hands on the DVD Seen 'Catch Me If You Can' yet Mike?
  7. Best Williams non-film work would have to be 'Thomas & The King'! LOL Go for Yo-Yo Ma and Treesong. I love them both! American Journey is a tremendous representation of his non-film work that I know I could not be without.
  8. He's done them all except 'The Dead Zone'. Check out his main title to 'Dead Ringers', a beautifully realised theme!
  9. What i'm longing to hear is a thrilling, perfectly constructed & pulse enducing action cue just like he used to write for the original trilogy: Final Battle (ANH) Battle Of Hoth (TESB) Forest Ambush (ROTJ) Know the ones I mean? Don't get me wrong I like some of the action cues in TPM (can't recall a great stand-out one from AOTC), but they just lack the initial punch and flair of the original action cues (in my opinion anyway)
  10. right..I wasn't sure about the "ck",and I though i remember To Thornfeld was in "Dracula". K.M.Mixing up cues. Was it not 'To Scarborough' in Dracula!? Oh I don't know? Tim - wishing i'd never started all this confusion!
  11. Some of my Christmas score highlights in addition to the Home Alone's are; Broughton's Miracle On 34th St, Convertino's Santa Clause, Mancini's Santa Claus The Movie (sadly not available on cd - yet?), Williams Christmas cues in Harry Potter are delightful (sans the bizarre choir in PS) Goodman's Muppet Christmas Carol, Korngold's Of Human Bondage, Elfman's Scrooged (totally buried in the film as we all know - disgraceful!)
  12. Ah yes that's the one, thanks
  13. A great album! Love the 'Scotland The Brave' arrangement with full orchestra! As for Jane Eyre, the entire score is a gem. Recorded in London around about the same time as Fiddler. A suitable salute to Vaughn Williams is present throughout, but features the unmistakable Williams (J) stamp. I love it, Overture & Trip To.... (can't remember and the cd is in the car, help me out KM?) are my favourite cues.
  14. ooooo yes! And what about the scene where the Japenese cadet fails to start the airplane, and when Jamie tries to revive the same cadet later? Such overpowering emotionally charged scoring! (cue a nasty Pauline Kael quote) I adore it! Sounds like you love this film as much as me then?
  15. So hard to pick one! ET's goodbye (the complete 15 minute cue is orchestral music perfection!) But Empire Of The Sun's Japenese salute is a hard one to beat aswell! Then there's Raiders 'Desert Chase', JP's 'Journey To The Island', Hook's 'Finale;, Far & Away's 'Land Race'................I'll stop now  ET it is!
  16. Mine too! I'm sure Heartbeeps & The Fury didn't take this long!!! Ah well, patience is a virtue I suppose?!
  17. Prefer his 'Superman' creations (particularly the Lois & Superman flying scene on the rear cover of Varese's Superman recording). Can't see I agree with your opinion on Drew, his done some wonderful work - but hey! Each to their own.
  18. If you check out the Silva webpage for this release, the discussion led by the webmaster actually has the audacity to slag off come of the original performances The Prague Phil will never be able to graspe Williams, have you heard the 'Mine Car Chase' clip? What a mess!!!!!
  19. I would gladly send you a copy of the full ceremony Ray, but it's on European PAL VHS, can your VCR play this format?
  20. Anything (well almost) by Georges Delerue should have her reeling with romantic intentions. Check out Varese' compilation as part of the 'Great Composers' series, it's gorgeous! James N. Howard's 'Prince Of Tides' is also a winner (IMO, and experience ) Williams wise, i would agree with Miguel re 'Sabrina', would also include The Balloon sequence from 'Witches Of Eastwick' & 'Jane Eyre's' theme.
  21. What an infuriating article! Yet another perfect example of classical snobbery (and indeed snubbery!) He seems to quote Williams performances and affiliations with Yo-Yo Ma & Perlman out of contempt. Stupid little man, will have to check out his own webpage to see what else he has to say!
  22. What about 'Michael Collins', 'Final Fantasy', 'A Time To Kill, 'Titus' & 'Interview With A Vampire'? Brilliant scores. Can't think of anyone else that writes such manic yet powerful horn passages. 'Batman Forever' suited the movie perfectly. Noisey, brash, comical & zany. The 'Circus Top' cue rules!
  23. I would go for 'Big', 'Romancing The Stone' only has a couple of good tracks IMO (The Gorge particularly). As much as I love Silvestri, I find it uninteresting. 'Big' has many lovely score highlights (from what i can remember watching the film many times growing up). The opening credits features a delightfully jaunty piano peice with soft percussion. There is an effective motif for the game maching that grants his wish (Zanzaber or something like that). A rythmic cue when Josh cycles to find the latter machine with a gorgeous oboe solo. Then of course the closing sentimental scene which is the main highlight of the score (the only available recording of that cue was thanks to John Scott's Screen Themes album released by Varese in 1989). The end credits draws things to a close with an inspired arrangement of chopsticks. I'm sure i've missed a few out, but these were the scenes i used to enjoy musically many years ago. I trust you have already got 'The Fury' then? Definitely one to own!
  24. mmmmm My favourite part of 'OHMSS' LOL (which is my favourite film in the series by the way)
